A GOOD WAY OF SAYING IT

I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written. – John 21:25b

After one prayer meeting, a brother asked me how many blessings from the Lord I could name. I told him that if I were to answer his question, I’d finish the next day.
We both laughed. But I was able to drive home the point that the Lord blesses me over and over again. And He blesses abundantly. I’m surprised and awed to realize the blessing I can get even in unpleasant experiences.
My style of describing the Lord’s awesome blessings was not original. St. John drove home his point that Jesus did a plethora of great things through a more profound style.
He wrote, “I doubt there would be room enough in the entire world to hold the books to record them.”
What better way to describe the plentitude of Jesus’ works!Cristy Galang (cristy_cc@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Am I aware that Jesus did so many things before He returned to the Father? Did I ever doubt the Church He built more than 2,000 years ago will stand forever?

Lord Jesus, I believe in You. And I am certain no power on earth can ever destroy You or Your Church. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

Two years more of house arrest and plenty of opportunities to proclaim the Gospel. I wonder how tempted Paul would have been to escape? Perhaps he decided it was more prudent to stay put rather than to risk death had he tried. At least he had certain freedom while under house arrest.

Acts 28:16-20, 30-31
16 When he entered Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him. 17 Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered he said to them, “My brothers, although I had done nothing against our people or our ancestral customs, I was handed over to the Romans as a prisoner from Jerusalem. 18 After trying my case the Romans wanted to release me, because they found nothing against me deserving the death penalty. 19 But when the Jews objected, I was obliged to appeal to Caesar, even though I had no accusation to make against my own nation. 20 This is the reason, then, I have requested to see you and to speak with you, for it is on account of the hope of Israel that I wear these chains.” 30 He remained for two full years in his lodgings. He received all who came to him, 31 and with complete assurance and without hindrance he proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalm 11:4, 5, 7
R: The just will gaze on your face, O Lord.
4 The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD’s throne is in heaven. His eyes behold, his searching glance is on mankind. (R) 5 The LORD searches the just and the wicked; the lover of violence he hates. 7 For the LORD is just, he loves just deeds; the upright shall see his face. (R)

G O S P E L

We need to be concerned more about our own salvation than the salvation of others. Yes, we should do all that we can to help others in their faith journey, but we cannot give what we do not have. Discipleship is a 24/7 calling. Let us pray for the grace to be faithful so as to affect and inspire others.

John 21:20-25
20 Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved, the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper and had said, “Master, who is the one who will betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” 22 Jesus said to him, “What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours? You follow me.” 23 So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die. But Jesus had not told him that he would not die, just “What if I wanthim to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours?” 24 It is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. 25 There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.

WHAT ABOUT HIM?

There goes Simon Peter again! Noticing the Beloved Disciple, Simon Peter, impulsive as ever, voices his curiosity about the other disciple’s fate. “Lord,” he asked Jesus, “how about him?”
Jesus answered Simon Peter’s question by not answering it. “If I want him to be alive until I return, what is it to you?” It was all that Jesus gave him. Clearly, Jesus was telling Simon Peter that it was not his business whatever happens to the Beloved Disciple or to the other apostles for that matter; rather, what is truly important is that His will be fulfilled in each of them.
So it is with every follower of Jesus, including you and me. What is most essential is doing the will of Jesus. The details in the Gospel today are implied examples of this: Simon Peter is called to be a shepherd while John a witness, but each is equally called to do the will of God.
Interestingly and very importantly, in the Gospel of John, these are literally Jesus’ last words. And they are words on what it means to be His disciple: discipleship is to be modeled on His sonship of the Father.
Let us focus on Jesus, not on others. Let us be absorbed in doing the will of Jesus, not in our curiosity about others. Never compare yourself with anyone, save alone with Jesus whose obedience to the will of the Father should always be the pattern of our own obedience to Him.
What happened then to John? He alone among the apostles did not die a martyr’s death. He continued giving witness to Jesus — through verbal preaching and writing — even as he grew very, very old and blind in an island called Patmos.
And Simon Peter? After leading the church in her “infancy years,” he died a martyr’s death on the hills of the Vatican during the first wave of the widespread persecution of Christians under Emperor Nero. And you? Tell me. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
True discipleship is to be modelled on Jesus’ sonship of the Father. It is the same for us.

Help me focus only on You, Jesus, as I strive to do Your will each day. May nothing inordinate disturb me in fulfilling the mission You have entrusted me with, and may I neither disturb others from fulfilling theirs. Amen.

St. Helen, pray for us.
