BLEACHED BLACK SHEEP

“…when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted…” – John 21:18

I was the black sheep among the girls in our family. I love my mom very much but I was young and incredibly stupid with the I-wannado-whatever-I-want attitude.
Mom was just so understanding that I took advantage of that. Even if she was livid with rage, I knew that deep down she loved me unconditionally. I don’t think she prayed as hard for anybody else as she did for me. I actually hold the bragging rights over my siblings that my mom loved me the most since she prayed for me more and cried for me most.
It could only be by God’s grace and awesome power that my rebellious heart was tamed. I was the first one to follow my mom in accepting Jesus into my life early in college. Now I was answerable to God alone. Even if my mom wasn’t watching, I knew that He was.
After some time, Mom probably knew her job was done. She lost her memory to Alzheimer’s disease shortly after I got married to the guy who would often bring her home after their prayer meeting. Even while she is still alive in this world but unable to communicate, I’m sure God has already told her, “Virgie, well done. We did it.” Ronna Ledesma (ronnaledesma@email.com)

REFLECTION:
Jesus came that we might have life and have it abundantly.

Lord Jesus, thank You for blessing me with a mama sheep who loved her wayward sheep unconditionally just as You would.

COMPANION

1st READING

God seems to be protecting Paul’s life for now. We must assume that there is still more for him to do — namely, to give testimony to God and His love in Rome. Paul’s acceptance of his fate is something that ought to give us all courage. It is doubtful that we will be imprisoned for proclaiming the Gospel, but let us pray that we will have the same level of commitment in carrying out our mission no matter what the cost.

Acts 25:13b-21
13 King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea on a visit to Festus. 14 Sine they spent several days there, Festus referred Paul’s case to the king, saying, “There is a man here left in custody by Felix. 15 When I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and the elders of the Jews brought charges against him and demanded his condemnation. 16 I answered them that it was not Roman practice to hand over an accused person before he has faced his accusers and had the opportunity to defend himself against their charge. 17 So when [they] came together here, I made no delay; the next day I took my seat on the tribunal and ordered the man to be brought in. 18 His accusers stood around him, but did not charge him with any of the crimes I suspected. 19 Instead they had some issues with him about their own religion and about a certain Jesus who had died but who Paul claimed was alive. 20 Since I was at a loss how to investigate this controversy, I asked if he were willing to go to Jerusalem and there stand trial on these charges. 21 And when Paul appealed that he be held in custody for the Emperor’s decision, I ordered him held until I could send him to Caesar.”

Psalm 103:1-2, 11-12, 19-20ab
R: The Lord has established his throne in heaven.
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all my being, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. (R) 11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him. (R) 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has he put our transgressions from us. (R) 19 The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all. 20 Bless the LORD, all you his angels, you mighty in strength, who do his bidding. (R)

G O S P E L
Jesus repeatedly asks Peter whether or not he loves Him. Why? I think there is a very simple answer to this question if we consider that perhaps Jesus means to ask not just Peter but each one of us. We will all be subjected to temptation every day of our lives. Will we succumb to the temptation? I do not know, but I am sure that along with each temptation, Jesus could be asking us, “Do you love me?”

John 21:15-19
15 After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them, he said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He then said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”
1 Samuel 17-20
my reflections
t h i n k : Along with each temptation that comes to us is the question that Jesus could be asking us, “Do you love me?”

NOT PERFECT LOVE BUT LOVE PERFECTED

Because Simon Peter’s profession of love is threefold, the Gospel today also reminds us of his threefold denial of Jesus. Various writers have said much about Simon Peter’s denial of Jesus. But what can we say about his love for Jesus?
First, Simon Peter’s love for Jesus was not a perfect love but love perfected. As he experienced how much Jesus loved him, he grew more and more deeply in love with Jesus. We, too, do not begin with a perfect love for Jesus; our love for Him is perfected as His love is made perfect in us.
Second, Simon Peter’s love for Jesus was more than the love that the other disciples had for Jesus. “Simon, son of John,” Jesus asked him, “do you love Me more than these others do?” Simon Peter answered, “Yes, Lord, You know I love You.”
Interestingly, Simon Peter did not say that he loved Jesus more than those others did. Perhaps he was being truthful and careful. Yes, he loved Jesus but he was careful not to boast that he loved Him more than the others did because he, too, was guilty of loving the Lord less. Still, Simon Peter loved Jesus more than the others did because his failure did not deter him from following Jesus. Quite often, the measure of our love is not in never falling but in the number of times we rise again for love of Jesus.
Third, Simon Peter’s love for Jesus was a call unto greater love of others. His great love for Jesus must be translated into his sacrificial love for the Church that Jesus entrusted to his care. The challenge of loving Jesus is in the ability to see, recognize, serve and love Him in others. The ultimate test of loving Jesus is in dying for others. It is worth noting that after Simon Peter professed his love for Jesus and after Jesus entrusted to him the feeding and tending of His sheep, Jesus described to him the manner by which he was to give glory to God.
We have denied and continue to deny Jesus through sin. But this should not make us give up and stop loving Jesus. We should all the more cling to Jesus and tell Him, “Lord, You know everything; You know I love You.” Because St. Paul says, “Where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more” (Romans 6:20), even sin makes perfect the love we have for Jesus.Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Ours is not a perfect love but a love perfected.

Jesus, I love you. Perfect my love for You. Amen.

St. Gollen, pray for us.
