HOPE IN YOUR HEART

“Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” – John 14: 27

In the movie Prince Caspian, the heroes battle an enormous army. They know they need the help of Aslan (the lion), King of Narnia, who said he would come when they needed him. Not seeing him, they abandon hope and rely on their own strength.
They fight but are held back by an overwhelming force. Now facing certain defeat, they had no other recourse but to believe in Aslan. With hope in their hearts, Aslan came as he promised and saved the day.
When I was in high school, there was a time that my parents had no idea where to get the next meal. They tried borrowing and making things happen but nothing came of it. Suddenly, my uncle came from out of nowhere and handed some money to see us through. My father broke down and related how he prayed for God’s intervention. Only when he could do no more did he try asking the Father.
If only we rely on God in the first place, we’d probably have less worries.Jun Asis (mabuting. balita@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
May God be your first recourse. He’ll always see you  through.

I lay every concern I have at Your feet, Lord. I will not let my heart be troubled anymore.

COMPANION

1st READING

Paul was stoned and beaten a number of times among other things but nothing could hold him back from his mission to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I wonder what it is that makes Paul so fervent in his desire to evangelize. Perhaps we should ask him to instill some of whatever it is into us so that we will take a little more seriously our responsibility to live and proclaim the Gospel.

Acts 14:19-28
19 In those days, some Jews from Antioch and Iconium arrived and won over the crowds. They stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. 20 But when the disciples gathered around him, he got up and entered the city. On the following day he left with Barnabas for Derbe. 21 After they had proclaimed the good news to that city and made a considerable number of disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch. 22 They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith, saying, “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.” 23 They appointed presbyters for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord in whom they had put their faith. 24 Then they traveled through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia. 25 After proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia. 26 From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now accomplished. 27 And when they arrived, they called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. 28 Then they spent no little time with the disciples.

Psalm 145:10-11, 12-13ab, 21
R: Your friends make known, O Lord, the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
10 Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. 11 Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. (R) 12 Making known to men your might and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and your dominion endures through all generations. (R) 21 May my mouth speak the praise of the LORD, and may all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever. (R)

G O S P E L
Jesus’ entire life is given over to one thing — doing His Father’s will. This is where Jesus finds His fulfillment. The same should be true for each of us. From a faith perspective on life, there is nothing more important than obedience to God. Thus I will be doing my best to learn His will and follow it.

John 14:27-31a
27 Jesus said to his disciples: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. 28 You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe. 30 I will no longer speak much with you, for the ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me, 31 but the world must know that I love the Father and that I do just as the Father has commanded me.

my reflections
t h i n k : Jesus’ life is given over to one thing — doing His Father’s will — and it should be for us, too.

JESUS — OUR PEACE

Daily we pray for peace. We continue praying for peace because we still lack it. The Gospel today tells us that Jesus already gave us peace, but why do we still have no peace?
The answer lies in clarifying what kind of peace we are referring to. There are many kinds of peace but many of them are not peace at all. Here are three among many.
For some, peace is having more than enough. But when is enough really enough? Those who live by the principle of grabbing as much as they can so that they have more than enough do not live in peace. That is not peace; it is hedonism.
For others, peace is the opposite of having enough. It is having nothing at all. But destitution is not peace. And self-inflicted misery is always sadism, not peace.
There are also those who think that peace is avoiding disagreements. This way of thinking is deceiving. Agreeing simply to avoid conflict is cowardice,
not peace. Peace that comes from diplomacy can be good but it can also be compromise, not peace.
The peace of Jesus is not hedonism, not sadism, not compromise — rather, it knows self-sacrifice. It has the capacity to sacrifice the self with joy. It enables the person to enjoy the rightful pleasures of life and yet has the capacity to temper pleasures with the values of God’s kingdom. The peace of Jesus dialogues, but it has non-negotiable principles.
Real peace is the peace of having a good relationship with God, of having been reconciled to God through Jesus. It is the peace that the world cannot give nor take away. It is, however, the peace that makes us surrender our fears and useless worries.
Jesus is our Peace. There is no other. With Jesus in our hearts, nothing and no one can disturb us. I do not believe in a hedonistic peace. It is worldliness. I do not believe in a sadistic peace. It is foolishness. I do not believe in a compromised peace. It is often cowardice disguised. I believe only in the peace of Christ. He Himself is our Peace. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Jesus is our Peace. There is no other. With Jesus in our hearts, nothing and no one can disturb us.

Jesus, Your are my Peace. Be at peace, my soul. Jesus is here. Amen.

St. Augustine Webster, pray for us.
