THE REAL JERUSALEM

The angel took me in spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem…– Revelation 21:10

It has been 13 years now and I have not traveled anywhere else outside the Philippines again.
My last foreign trip was to the Holy Land.
It was not a trip that I planned for — but which I gladly took when the opportunity came. I was then struggling with my spiritual life and it was probably God’s way of setting me off to a more serious relationship with Him.
I didn’t know it then, but His grace was working in me as we visited the holy sites. In the Church of Nativity, I cried buckets of tears for no reason at all or maybe for a reason I didn’t know then. As we prayed by the Sea of Galilee, I had a vision of God waiting for me at the other end of a long bridge. I was too high from the experience that as we headed back home, my heart was filled with the desire to give my life to God as His bride.
Looking back now, the experience opened for me the real city of Jerusalem — the one that lies inside my heart. The trip led me to me, where God truly dwells. Tess V. Atienza (svp_tvatienza@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Don’t be afraid to take the trip of a lifetime — to your inner self. Face whatever you’ll find there.

Dear God, be with me as I face the many unknowns inside me.

COMPANION

1st READING

Disputes and struggles between competing ideas are a way of life with human beings. How we resolve them is crucial to the continuance of the community to which we belong. Thank God He has given us the Holy Spirit to help resolve difficulties within the life of the Church.

Acts 15:1-2, 22-29
1 Some who had come down from Judea were instructing the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the Mosaic practice, you cannot be saved.” 2 Because there arose no little dissension and debate by Paul and Barnabas with them, it was decided that Paul, Barnabas, and some of the others should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and presbyters about this question. 22 The apostles and presbyters, in agreement with the whole church, decided to choose representatives and to send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. The ones chosen were Judas, who was called Barsabbas, and Silas, leaders among the brothers. 23 This is the letter delivered by them: “The apostles and the presbyters, your brothers, to the brothers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia of Gentile origin: greetings. 24 Since we have heard that some of our number who went out without any mandate from us have upset you with their teachings and disturbed your peace of mind, 25 we have with one accord decided to choose representatives and to send them to you along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 who have dedicated their lives to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 So we are sending Judas and Silas who will also convey this same message by word of mouth: 28 ‘It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities, 29 namely, to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from meats of strangled animals, and from unlawful marriage. If you keep free of these, you will be doing what is right. Farewell.’ ”

P S A L M

Psalm 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8 (4)
R: O God, let all the nations praise you!
1 [2] May God have pity on us and bless us; may he let his face shine upon us. 2 [3] So may your way be known upon earth; among all nations, your salvation. (R) 4 [5] May the nations be glad and exult because you rule the peoples in equity; the nations on the earth you guide. (R) 5 [6] May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you! 7 [8] May God bless us, and may all the ends of the earth fear him! (R)

2nd READING

The glory of the Lord is sufficient to light up the City of God. What a wonderful and glorious God we must have! I cannot wait to be with Him for eternity — it promises to be an experience that is out of this world. But let us not get too far ahead of ourselves too soon. First we must accomplish our earthly pilgrimage successfully. As we journey toward eternal life, let us pray that we will do our best to bring as many others as we can with us.

Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23
10 The angel took me in spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. 11 It gleamed with the splendor of God. Its radiance was like that of a precious stone, like jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a massive, high wall, with twelve gates where twelve angels were stationed and on which names were inscribed, [the names] of the twelve tribes of the Israelites. 13 There were three gates facing east, three north, three south, and three west. 14 The wall of the city had twelve courses of stones as its foundation, on which were inscribed the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 22 I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God almighty and the Lamb. 23 The city had no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gave it light, and its lamp was the Lamb.

G O S P E L

Obedience to the Word of God is a bedrock foundation of the life of Jesus; so it should be for us as well. What does it mean to know and follow the Word of God on a daily basis? First, it means that we regularly, hopefully daily, take up the Scriptures and meditate upon them. The Word of God is life and we will die spiritually if we do not partake of it often enough. We would not forget to eat and drink; how is it we so easily forget (or choose not) to feed our spirits with God’s Word?

John 14:23-29
23 Jesus said to his disciples: “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me. 25 “I have told you this while I am with you. 26 The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name — he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. 28 You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe.”

t h i n k : A s we journey toward eternal life, let us pray that we will do our best to bring as many others as we can with us.

SABBATH

HE WENT BUT NEVER FADES

In today’s Gospel, Jesus knows the pain of His disciples as He says goodbye to them. He prepares them for His departure and tells them not to be afraid. He is going away but He leaves them His Word, His peace and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus knows that when He goes, they will face many ambiguities and confusion, go through countless struggles and suffer various persecutions to the point of death. Even within their own community, they will encounter disagreements. We see an example in today’s First Reading. They have different memories of Jesus and emphasize different things about the Faith. The truth is, in their experience of persecution from outside their community and of disagreement within their community, they should all the more put at work their faith in Jesus.
Jesus went away but He never fades. Seasons fade but not Jesus. That He cannot be seen does not in any way mean He is not around anymore. Jesus is present today in a different way. We experience the new presence of Jesus through faith. Whenever we live according to His Word, whenever we become channels of His peace to others, and whenever we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us through persecutions and conflicts within and outside the Church, we feel and we know that Jesus is indeed still with us.
In a mysterious way, in Jesus, the past and the future converge and explode, as it were, into an eternal presence. The Holy Eucharist we celebrate is the
perfect example of this mystery. In the Eucharist, Jesus is always present in our midst. For Jesus went but He never fades. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Not because we cannot see Him walking around or hear Him speak or touch Him as the disciples did, it does not mean that Jesus is less present now than before. It only means that Jesus is present today in a different way.

My Jesus, be present not only to me but, most importantly, through me. With Your help and my humble efforts, let me love as You love. Let me become like You. Amen.

St. Vincent, pray for us.
