DIDACHE

Feast of Sts. Philip and James, Apostles

GOD OF THE IMPOSSIBLE

“If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it” – John 14:14

“So how did you manage to check in your overweight baggage?” asked the guard who was harassing me at the entrance of the Jackson’s International Airport.
“There is nothing impossible with the Lord!” I replied. “What?” came the puzzled reply from the guard. “I said, ‘there is nothing impossible with the Lord!’”
Earlier at the check-in counter of Air Nuigini, I was informed my baggage was overweight by 11 kilos. My head ran through the computations. I had to pay over P9,600 for a box of Ox & Palm corned beef. Way too much! But instead of giving up, I said a silent prayer, in the name of Jesus, to make it possible for me to check in my baggage without having to pay a single toea (Papuan equivalent of a cent).
After about 20 minutes, an assistant working at the check-in counter approached me. “Sir, my boss is asking you to come and check in your baggage.” After a fewquestions, my baggage was accepted without me paying a single toea.
He is indeed the God of the impossible! Danny Tariman (danny@dtariman.com)

REFLECTION:
“All that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours.” (Mark 11:24)

Thank You, Lord, for giving us the key to answered prayers — Your name.

COMPANION

1st READING

Paul includes Jesus’ appearance to him at the end of the kerygma of the Gospel as he sees it. This tells us that Paul sees himself as one entrusted to bring the Gospel to the world. Paul’s particular area of responsibility is the Gentile peoples. Faith somehow incorporates even the Gentiles into the Tradition of revelation that stretches back to Abraham and of which Jesus is the culmination and fulfillment.

1 Corinthians 15:1-8
1 I am reminding you, brothers and sisters, of the Gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in which you also stand. 2 Through it you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. 3 For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures; 4 that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures; 5 that he appeared to Kephas, then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 After that he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one born abnormally, he appeared to me.

Psalm 19:2-3, 4-5
R: Their message goes out through all the earth.
1 [2] The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. 2 [3] Day pours out the word to day, and night to night imparts knowledge. (R) 3 [4] Not a word nor a discourse whose voice is not heard; 4 [5] through all the earth their voice resounds, and to the ends of the world, their message. (R)

G O S P E L

The promise that we will perform greater works than those of Jesus does seem a bit ridiculous at first. However, it becomes understandable when we realize that we cannot perform even lesser works without relying upon His grace. It is Jesus who really performs miracles in and through us — Him and the Holy Spirit. As vessels of His love to others, we become the instruments He uses to manifest His power and love to the world.

John 14:6-14
6 Jesus said to Thomas, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. 12 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.”

my reflections
think: As vessels of God’s love to others, we become the instruments He uses to manifest His power and love to the world.

SABBATH

THE APOSTOLIC FACTOR

We celebrate today the feast of the apostles, Philip and James.
Though with a Greek name, Philip, like Peter and Andrew, was from Bethsaida. This suggests that Philip must have been a fisherman, too. He preached the Gospel in Phrygia where he was also crucified at the Hierapolis.
James (“the Less” because he was younger than the other James) was a relative of Jesus, most probably a cousin. He became the first bishop of Jerusalem. He labored for a better relationship between Jewish Christians and Gentile converts. He also wrote the epistles we read in the New Testament. Like Philip, James died a martyr’s death in the year 62 A.D. He was thrown down from the terrace of the Temple and stoned to death.
There are three important reasons why we should never forget the apostles. The apostles remind us that the events we celebrate in the liturgy are not mythological. They are our link to history. We come to believe in Jesus as the Christ through the testimony of the apostles. They handed down to us the Faith we now profess.
The apostles were also the very first to interpret the meaning of the events they link us to: the life, teachings and deeds of Jesus. The witness of the apostles remains until today as normative for all Christians. Fidelity to their teachings is fidelity to the Faith.
The apostles, more importantly, enabled us to experience the Risen Lord in Word and Sacrament as they were the first to celebrate the memory of Jesus. They created what we may call the “liturgical experience” of Christ. Celebrating the liturgy is always celebrating with the apostles. We owe the apostles more than a debt of gratitude. Human as they were, they were weak, blemished sinners. This serves as a comforting reminder to us that holiness is humanly possible, but of course with the mercy of God. He, indeed, does not call the qualified — He makes qualified those whom He calls. Fr. Bobby  Titco

Reflection Question:
The apostles link us to the past, interpret Jesus to us and give us a liturgical experience of Christ.

Thank You, Jesus, for choosing the apostles and empowering them to accomplish the mandate You have given them. May we always treasure them and remain faithful to their memory, their teaching and heritage. Amen.

St. Ansfrid, pray for us.
