Feast of St. Matthias, Apostle

THE LEGACY

“It was not you who chose me… I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will last.” – John 15:16

In my unguarded moments, I’d ask the Lord why I am the only one in a brood of six who experienced the loss of two children plus a special child to take care of. Couldn’t I have been spared? Or couldn’t the burden have been shared with others? At a young age, I feel I have so many battle scars to show for.
Then I met someone who lost her entire family in a fire. And another one with only two children but both are severely autistic. Then there was my best friend who suffered through painful cancer before she left her three young children behind. And a mother who lost her only daughter to a rare brain condition.
Suddenly, my battle scars seem like tiny pimples. Like Job I say, “I will put my hand over my mouth in silence. I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.”
Because of what I’ve been through, my faith has been fire-tried. This is my legacy to my children — not money or a house but a rich inheritance of knowing that God is everything the Bible says He is, and that He is head over heels in love with us! This they will also pass on to their children and to their children’s children and so on and so forth. Ronna Ledesma (ronnaledesma@email.com)

REFLECTION:
“For God disciplines those He loves…” (Hebrews 12:6)

Thank You, Lord, for choosing me to bear these battle scars for Your greater glory.

COMPANION

1st READING

Matthias replaces Judas to bring the number of apostles back to 12. I see in this desire of the apostles the seed of apostolic succession. The role of the apostles must be one that continues beyond their deaths as they have been entrusted with the role of preserving the faith and teaching of the Church. Apostolic Succession as a doctrine is essential to the nature of the Church as without it the Church would have no authority, no means by which to order herself and keep order among her members.

Acts 1:15-17, 20-26
15 Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers (there was a group of about one hundred and twenty persons in the one place). He said, 16 “My brothers and sisters, the scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand through the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who was the guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17 Judas was numbered among us and was allotted a share in this ministry. 20 For it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘Let his encampment become desolate, and may no one dwellin it.’ And: ‘May another take his office.’ 21 Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us, become with us a witness to his resurrection.” 23 So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own place.” 26 Then they gave lots to them, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was counted with the eleven apostles.

Psalm 113:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8
R: The Lord will give him a seat with the leaders of his people.
1 Praise, you servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD. 2 Blessed be the name of the LORD both now and forever. (R) 3 From the rising to the setting of the sun is the name of the LORD to be praised. 4 High above all nations is the LORD; above the heavens is his glory. (R) 5 Who is like the LORD, our God, who is enthroned on high 6 and looks upon the heavens and the earth below? (R) 7 He raises up the lowly from the dust; from the dunghill he lifts up the poor 8 to seat them with princes, with the princes of his own people. (R)

G O S P E L

Jesus is the basis of any community of faith. Just as the trunk of the tree provides the foundation for the branches and the roots of the tree for the trunk, so we all have to be rooted in Jesus in order to live our Christian lives to the full. In the same way that a vintner prunes the grapevines so that they will bear more and better fruit, God will prune our lives so that they will bear better fruit for His Kingdom.

John 15:9-17
9 Jesus said to his disciples: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. 12 This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. 16 It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. 17 This I command you: love one another.”

my reflections
t h i n k : God will prune our lives so that they will bear better fruit for His Kingdom.

SABBATH

GRATUITOUSLY

Today is the feast of St. Matthias, the chosen replacement for Judas Iscariot who betrayed the Lord. Why does Judas Iscariot have to be replaced?  The remaining 11 apostles, under the leadership of Simon Peter, felt that Judas had to be replaced to complete the Twelve. They were gradually realizing that their number was not accidental Jesus indeed and consciously composed their group to be 12. When He gathered them together to be His apostles, He was constituting the Church as the new Israel, with the apostles as the 12 tribes. But Judas fell out from the group; thus, someone had to replace him.
But why Matthias? There is nothing mentioned about him in the Scriptures before his nomination and eventual elevation into the Sacred College. The popular candidate should be Joseph a.k.a. Barnabas (“Son of Encouragement”). Barnabas’ fidelity to Jesus, his generous concern for the work of the apostles and other exemplary traits are already mentioned prior to the choosing of Judas’ replacement. If our standards alone are used in selecting the new addition to the Eleven, Barnabas would have been chosen by landslide.
We know very little about Matthias. Even after his inclusion into the circle of Twelve, all we know about Matthias is that he worked for the Faith in Palestine where he was stoned to death around the year 64 A.D. Other than these details, we know nothing, yet we learn something very important from Matthias’ addition to the Eleven, a lesson emphasized by the Gospel today: “You have not chosen Me; I have chosen you. Go and bear fruit that will last” (John 15:16).
The Lord chooses us not because we deserve His choice. His choice is a favor, a blessing, grace. As you and I have been called and chosen by the Lord for various tasks in His vineyard, we, like Matthias, have been elected gratuitously. We owe it to the Lord that we have been called and chosen. Thus, we owe it to Him to respond to His call and to be faithful to His favor.
People do not really need to know more about us but about the Lord who favored us with His choice. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
We do not choose the Lord; the Lord chooses us.

Thank You, Jesus, for calling and choosing me. Still by Your aid and mercy, may I always respond to Your mandate with fidelity, generosity and love. Amen.

St. Maria Dominic Mazzarello, pray for us.
