Solemnity of the Pentecost

TRUE SERVICE

There are different forms of service, but the same Lord. – 1 Corinthians 12:5

When I was still new in Youth for Christ (YFC), I treated it as a separate part of my life, just like how I treated school and my family. You could say I “compartmentalized” the different aspects of my life. School is entirely separate from family, and the two are separate from other extracurricular things I was busy with. I liked it that way because it made prioritizing easier.
Whenever the word “service” was mentioned, I automatically think of YFC, and nothing else. It came to a point that I was ready to drop everything else in favor of my service in YFC, since I saw it as something I was giving to the Lord. After some time, though, these other aspects of my life that I did not consider as “service” suffered because I didn’t find them important enough to be on high priority.
When God asked me to give my life in service to Him, He didn’t mean just serving the community I’m a part of, but actually giving the best in every single aspect of my life. After all, He gave all for me; why shouldn’t I give Him my all?Tina Matanguihan (tina. matanguihan@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you living your  life in service of the Lord?

I will continue, my God, to do all my actions for the love of You. (La Sallian prayer)

COMPANION

1st READING

Pentecost is one of the most exciting celebrations in the Church’s calendar. We celebrate the power to live as men and women of Christ; we celebrate the many gifts of the Holy Spirit given to us for this purpose. It is a day to open our hearts and minds to the fullness of the possibilities that faith in Christ brings to our lives. The apostles are no longer afraid, no longer locked in a small room. They are set free to boldly proclaim the Gospel without any care in the world.

Acts 2:1-11
1 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. 2 And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. 3 Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. 6 At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language? 9 We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, 11 both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.”

P S A L M

Psalm 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34
R: Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD, my God, you are great indeed! 24 How manifold are your works, O LORD! the earth is full of your creatures. (R) 29 If you take away their breath, theyperish and return to their dust. 30 When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. (R) 31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD be glad in his works! 34 Pleasing to him be my theme; I will be glad in the LORD. (R)

2nd READING

It is the Spirit at work within us that gives us the power to bring about God’s Kingdom. The Spirit does not just help us to pray; the Spirit empowers us to act and is the power in our efforts to proclaim the Gospel. Today we rejoice in all that the Spirit causes us to be and enables us to become in the hope of the resurrection.

1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 (or Romans 8:8-17)
3 Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; 5 there are different forms of service but the same Lord; 6 there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. 7 To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. 12 As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

G O S P E L

The role of the Spirit in our lives is many and varied. Let us never underestimate what the Spirit can or desires to do with us. Sometimes I think it is our doubts that hold back the work of the Church from being what it could be. Let us be part of the solution and not part of the problem by running with the Holy Spirit in all He desires to do in our lives and in the Church.

John 20:19-23 (or John 14:15-16, 23b-26)
19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

my reflections
t h i n k : Pentecost is a day to open our hearts and minds to the fullness of the possibilities that faith in Christ brings to our lives.

SABBATH

CHRIST’S WITNESSES

When I was a child, many people told me that I should study law. When I earned my bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the Ateneo, the attraction of proceeding to law school was even more real.
In the Philippines, lawyers have very exciting lives. Philippine jurisprudence is familiar with celebrated cases — endless cases of election protests even when the term of the elected has already ended, many cases of celebrities who seem to figure more often than not in only two: sex and drugs, and so on. In the Gospel today, the Solemnity of Pentecost, Jesus promises to send them the best Lawyer.
What we celebrate today, the Solemnity of Pentecost, is the arrival of the Lawyer of Jesus and the power He brings upon us to testify in favor of Jesus. The case of Christ is never a closed case. There is always opposition to face and a jury to convince.
As witnesses for Jesus, may we — through the empowerment of this Super Advocate He sends us — be faithful in testifying to God’s wonderful work in our lives. May our lives produce enough evidence to convince the world that our Savior is alive.Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Does my life stand well as evidence for Christ? What about Christ does my life testify to?

Holy Spirit, Advocate and Paraclete, sent by Jesus from the Father, come into my soul and empower me with Your grace to give witness to Jesus in the best and most convincing way. Make my life stand well as evidence for Jesus now and forever. Amen.

St. Ivo, pray for us.
