self-righteous holiness

“As the Father loves, so I also love you. Remain in my love.” – John 15:9

After doing some postgraduate studies in Europe, my eldest sister came home announcing that she was getting married to an Italian she met there. My sisters and I didn’t accept the news too well because their relationship was not “discerned” and “prayed over” according to our community norms. When he came over to the Philippines to meet our family, my sisters and I had our self-righteous noses so high up in the air that you could actually have a clear view of our brains. A non-renewed Christian was going to contaminate our blood line! In an effort to be accepted, he even attended a Life in the Spirit Seminar during his short stay in Manila. But it still wasn’t enough to satisfy our standardof holiness.
Well, thank God he was more Christian than we were. Otherwise, my sister might have missed out on marrying such a fine Italian all because of her three bratty sisters who called themselves passionate Christians. After many, many years, we finally got it right — that being a Christian is all about loving like Jesus did and not about following or fitting into a set of norms. Praise God He did not discard us just because we didn’t fit into His standard of holiness.Ronna Ledesma (ronnaledesma@email.com)

REFLECTION:
it is better to love than to be right.

Lord, in our effort to be holy, teach us to love truly. Amen.

St. Benedicta, pray for us.

COMPANION

1st READING

Peter speaks and so goes the mind of the Church. We believe that when the Pope speaks ex cathedra (literally, from the chair) on issues of faith and morals, he speaks infallibly, that is, without error. He rarely uses such authority as it is not often necessary. Certain documents of the Councils of the Church also provide inerrant teaching. It is important for us to see how this authority is essential to maintaining the unity of the Church and also the purity of her doctrine.

Acts 15:7-21
7 After much debate had taken place, Peter got up and said to the Apostles and the presbyters, “My brothers, you are well aware that from early days God made his choice among you that through my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness by granting them the Holy Spirit just as he did us. 9 He madeno distinction between us and them, for by faith he purified their hearts. 10 Why, then, are you now putting God to the test by placing on the shoulders of the disciples a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear? 11 On the contrary, we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they.” 12 The whole assembly fell silent, and they listened while Paul and Barnabas described the signs and wonders God had worked among the Gentiles through them. 13 After they had fallen silent, James responded, “My brothers, listen to me. 14 Symeon has described how God first concerned himself with acquiring from among the Gentiles a people for his name. 15 The words of the prophets agree with this, as is written: 16 ‘After this I shall return and rebuild the fallen hut of David; from its ruins I shall rebuild it and raise it up again, 17 so that the rest of humanity may seek out the Lord, even all the Gentiles on whom my name is invoked. Thus says the Lord who accomplishes these things, 18 known from of old.’ 19 It is my judgment, therefore, that we ought to stop troubling the Gentiles who turn to God, 20 but tell them by letter to avoid pollution from idols, unlawful marriage, the meat of strangled animals, and blood. 21 For Moses, for generations now, has had those who proclaim him in every town, as he has been read in the synagogues every sabbath.”

Psalm 96:1-2a, 2b-3, 10
R: Proclaim God’s marvelous deeds to all the nations.
1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all you lands. 2 Sing to the LORD; bless his name. (R) Announce his salvation, day after day. 3 Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds. (R) 10 Say among the nations: The LORD is king. He has made the world firm, not to be moved; he governs the peoples with equity. (R)

Today’s text reminds us to remain in the Father’s love. If we look at the Greek word used here for “remain,” namely menai, we will discover that the meaning is quite profound because it is really a call to “abide or live” in God. This indicates the depth of our dignity and identity as men and women created by God. We should never forget this lesson as we seek to live out our call as His disciples in today’s world.

John 15:9-11
9 Jesus said to his disciples: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.”

my reflections
think: We should always remember our dignity and identity as men and women created by God when we seek to live out our call as His disciples.

SABBATH

SO DOES HE LOVE US

We do not usually wonder why Jesus loves us so much. Instead, we expect Jesus to love us more than we deserve. Likewise, we do not question how Jesus can love us immensely. We usually think that Jesus can love us that much because He is God. But today, let us pause for a while and, perhaps even just for now, ask: How can Jesus love us so much when we are not deserving of His Love?
Jesus Himself answers our question. “As the Father loves Me,” He says, “so do I love you.” Jesus loves us because the Father has loved Him first. Jesus can love us so much because the Father loves Him so much, too. Jesus loves us as His Father loves Him, and the measure of His love for us is the same measure of His Father’s love for Him. His Father’s love for Him is like an inexhaustible well from which Jesus draws out His love for us.
If someone approaches you and asks you why and how can Jesus loves us so much, read the Gospel
today to him.
This is also precisely why love can be commanded. Pope Benedict XVI said that love can be commanded because it has first been given. Jesus can command us to love one another because He has loved us first. Jesus loves us so that we may love others. Let us remain in this love.Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Jesus loves me so that I may love others, too. Love is not a mere invitation to me. Love is a command. The true measure of love is love without measure.

Thank You, Jesus, for loving me more than I deserve and more than I know. Help me to love others as much as You love me. Jesus, love others through me. Amen.

St. Benedicta, pray for us.
