CHRISTIAN WITNESSING

“This is how all will know that you are my disciples: if you have love for one another.” – John 13:35

Part of the community teaching was how to relate with each other especially in public. We were supposed to hug or kiss when greeting sister to sister.
Brothers were to greet each other with side hugs or pat each other’s shoulder. Our leader even demonstrated how this should be done.
For a brother greeting a sister, the mode of greeting depended on the latter’s preference. The rationale was to be a witness in front of others.
Although it was rather “canned,” our leader had a point. As a Christian community, we had to show that we were disciples of Jesus. We were to love one another. It’s true that we sometimes fall short of this commandment and that is why we have to “script” our behavior so that we can be witnesses. But the goal ought to be towards maturity in the Lord and towards removing the script and becoming true witnesses of love coming from the heart.Cristy Galang (cristy_cc@ yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
What can I do to be a constant witness to the world of the call to love others?

Jesus, please teach me to love You and to love others as You want me to. I desire to preach Your Gospel with my life but I need You because I am so weak. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

The mission of Paul is starting to take off and disciples are being made across large swathes of what is now modern day Turkey. Unfortunately there are very few Christians left in what is today a secular Muslim country. I think Paul would be somewhat horrified at how Christianity was replaced by Islam as the dominant religion in the area. We should not allow Christianity to become a watered-down sort of response to God’s call. The author tells us that Paul constantly exhorted the Christians to persevere in their faith. We need to heed this call today.

Acts 14:21-27
21 After Paul and Barnabas had proclaimed the good news to that city and made a considerable number of disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch. 22 They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith, saying, “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.” 23 They appointed presbyters for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord in whom they had put their faith. 24 Then they travelled through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia. 25 After proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia. 26 From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now accomplished. 27 And when they arrived, they called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

Psalm 145:8-9, 10-11, 12-13
R: I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. (R) 10 Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. 11 Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. (R) 12 Let them make known your might to the children of Adam, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and your dominion endures through all generations. (R)

2nd READING

The Scriptural visions of the New Jerusalem are meant to inspire us. Remember, they were written 2,000 years ago and so they cannot make use of modern architectural and engineering technology to dazzle our imaginations. They still manage to do this if we read them with faith and interpret them with the help of the Holy Spirit as inspiration for us to persevere in our faith walks.

Revelation 21:1-5a
1 Then I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will always be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, [for] the old order has passed away.” 5 The one who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.”

Jesus affirms that our love for each other is one of the primary signs and witnesses of the Kingdom of God. The world around us needs the hope that comes from knowing that we are loved by God and one another. There are so many depressed and lonely people crying out for love today. Let us do what we can to help fill the void in their hearts with the love of God.

John 13:31-33a, 34-35
31 When Judas had left, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once. 33 My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. 34 I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. 35 This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

SABBATH

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

What is your name? What is your shape? These days, most of our names do not say anything anymore about who we are and what we are like. The ancient Romans would rise in protest against the way we choose names for our children. They believed that “nomen est omen,” i. e., “the name is the destiny” or better yet “the destiny is in the name.”
There was a young Jew from the island of Cyprus who belonged to the first Christian community. His name was Joseph but the apostles gave him the name Barnabas, which means “son of encouragement.” St. Luke describes Barnabas as a “good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.” He encouraged many believers to persevere in their faith. He did this by living according to the teachings of the Lord in word and in deed.
When Saul was converted and became Paul, he presented himself to the apostles and received a rather cold reception, if not suspicion, because he had been the unrivaled persecutor of Christians. To avoid any harm coming to Paul, the leaders made sure that Paul was soon deported to Tarsus.
But Barnabas believed in Paul and encouraged him in his new life. And when he was commissioned by the apostles to oversee the Church in Antioch, he sought out Paul and requested him to be his “auxiliary bishop.” For one full year, Barnabas and Paul ministered there. The fraternal bond between Barnabas and Paul, however, did not end in Antioch. They also went together in various missionary journeys, encouraging others to persevere in the faith. When Paul pursued other missionary frontiers alone, he extended to others the encouragement he himself received from Barnabas.
Encouragement gives shape to anyone’s life. It promotes the best in the other. It sees beyond faces into the other’s heart. Encouragement is investing time, talent and treasure in the person of the other. In this way, encouragement’s other name is love — and we are called to mirror this to others to help them into the shape of their names, to become who they are meant to be. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Is there a person around you who needs encouragement? Be a “Barnabas” to him.

Lord, heal my brokenness and put me together again each time I fall so that, with You, I may help others into the shape of their human dignity. Amen.

St. Zoe, pray for us.
