Solemnity of the Ascencion of the Lord
IN HIS TIME

“Stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” – Luke 24:49b

It’s been several months since I asked the Lord where He wanted me to serve Him. In my prayer time, I kept receiving a “call” to serve in the parish although I didn’t know what I was to do there.
One day, I decided to attend the Simbang Gabi (Christmas dawn Mass) in the chapel of a depressed area of our parish to see what ministry I can start there. That’s when I discovered that the Vedruna sisters, whom I had met in the Simbang Gabi, had a full-blown ministry with the poor mothers in the area already.
I opted to “wait for further instructions” and accepted a part-time job in a nearby school in the meantime. Three years later, I was invited to serve in the Basic Ecclesial Community of that parish. It turned out to be a much bigger job than any ministry I could have started on my own. I heard the Lord correctly three years earlier but it was only prophetic. It was not yet His time. I’m glad I chose to “remain in the city” — working only in the vicinity and ready to be uprooted anytime. So when He called, I was available. Cristy Galang (cristy_cc@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Do I try to seek God’s plans in what I do? Am I ready to “wait” if His call is not “now”?

Show me Your path, Lord, and I’ll follow. I live only to do Your will. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

The Ascension marks the end of Jesus’ physical mission on earth. He returns to His Father in order to send us the Holy Spirit. For the next week we reflect upon the absence of Jesus in the life of the community of the faithful and try to get in touch with their feelings of loss. It must have been devastating to them to have that feeling again only a few weeks after Jesus’ death and resurrection. I can imagine them asking why Jesus didn’t “hang around” a bit longer to help them get started.

Acts 1:1-11
1 In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught 2 until the day he was taken up, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for “the promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak; 5 for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 6 When they had gathered together they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. 10 While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. 11 They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”

Psalm 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9 (6)
R: God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.
1 [2] All you peoples, clap your hands, shout to God with cries of gladness, 2 [3] for the LORD, the Most High, the awesome, is the great king over all the earth. (R) 5 [6] God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy; the LORD, amid trumpet blasts. 6 [7] Sing praise to God, sing praise; sing praise to our king, sing praise. (R) 7 [8] For the king of all the earth is God; sing hymns of praise. 8 [9] God reigns over the nations, God sits upon his holy throne. (R)

2nd READING

Verses 27 and 28 tell us that there is no such thing as reincarnation. We die only once and then there is judgment. Oh, what a happy truth. I cannot think of anything worse than having to go through it all again … and again … and again. Once is enough for me. We have ample opportunity in this life to choose well and correct any wrong choices. It is simply a matter of motivation and priority.

Hebrews 9:24-28; 10:19-23
24 Christ did not enter into a sanctuary made by hands, a copy of the true one, but heaven itself, that he might now appear before God on our behalf. 25 Not that he might offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters each year into the sanctuary with blood that is not his own; 26 if that were so, he would have had to suffer repeatedly from the foundation of the world. But now once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin by his sacrifice. 27 Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment, 28 so also Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him. 10: 19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since through the blood of Jesus we have confidence of entrance into the sanctuary 20 by the new and living way he opened for us through the veil, that is, his flesh, 21 and since we have “a great priest over the house of God,” 22 let us approach with a sincere heart and in absolute trust, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. 23 Let us hold unwaveringly to our confession that gives us hope, for he who made the promise is trustworthy.

Our title and function as witnesses is an important one. To be a witness means exactly that — to give testimony to something. In our case, to the truth of the Gospel. If we fail to bear witness to the truth in a court of law we can be charged with perjury or contempt of court. I hate to know what the penalty is for failing to bear witness to the truth of the love of God.

Luke 24:46-53
46 Jesus said to his disciples: “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day 47 and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” 50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them. 51 As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven. 52 They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and they were continually in the temple praising God.

my reflections
t h i n k : We have ample opportunity in this life to choose well and correct any wrong choices.

SABBATH

NOT ABANDONED

Life is an endless series of coming and going. We celebrate new births while we mourn over every death. The only thing we know about death is the parting, but the last thing we know about a person is his death. The apostles, at first, thoughtthe same as regards Jesus. They felt that there was no hope left for them between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. But with their experience of the resurrection of Jesus, their faith was renewed and their hope reborn. Nonetheless, they had to face the fact that Jesus still had to return to the Father on the appointed time. We celebrate the Solemnity of the Lord’s Ascension to mark that appointed time.
According to Luke, Jesus told His disciples to remain in Jerusalem and there wait for power from on high to overshadow them. The departure of Jesus meant the arrival of the Holy Spirit; His ascent into heaven was the descent of His Spirit upon the believers. Because it was the Holy Spirit who marked the beginning of the Church, the same Spirit empowers the Church in all generations. This is why the Solemnity of Pentecost next Sunday is very important — it is a celebration of the Spirit in the heart of the Church.
Between Easter and Pentecost, however, is the Ascension: Jesus must return to the Father so that, from the Father, He may send us His Spirit. Thus, today we feast. After Jesus vanished from their sight on Ascension day, the disciples returned to Jerusalem, filled with great joy. They knew that Jesus went away but He was not really gone. Instead, through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in their hearts, Jesus was not only with them — He was already in them. The same is true with us who are disciples of Jesus today. Jesus lives in us. And if so, should we not, through the power of His Spirit, be another Jesus to one another? Jesus did not abandon us. If ever people feel that they are abandoned by Jesus, can it be because it is us who abandoned them? Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
When people question Jesus why He abandoned them, can it be that they should question us instead: Why did we abandon them?

Jesus, live in me. Let me be another You to the world. May no one who comes within my reach ever feel Your absence; rather, may he savor Your presence through me. Amen.

St. Brendan, pray for us.
