The God of the Service

And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. – Luke 24:15-16

“Where did you put the telephone directory?” I shouted.
“In the drawer,” Gina answered.
“It’s not here!”
So my wife went up, got the directory and placed it in my hands. “Ang bibig kasi ang naghahanap,” (‘Coz you’re looking with your mouth) she quipped.
She picked it up from right in front of me and I didn’t see it. I was too busy talking.
Our preoccupations often distract us from seeing Jesus, even when He is right there in front of us. Even the service we say we do for the Lord may keep us from what is truly essential.
Are you the church choirmaster who humiliates your members for singing out of tune? A prayer leader who cares more about attendance than your members’ relationship with the Lord? Maybe a lector who worries more about how good you sound than how people are touched by God’s Word?
Your service is just a means for you to see God more and to let others see Him more.
Don’t lose sight of that. Jun Asis (mabuting.balita@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Have I been distracted in my service that I have neglected to see God in it?

Lord, may I go about my duties and tasks with the mindset of glorifying You. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING in one year

The words of Peter are true for us all – none of us have all that much to give the poor, but we all have the capacity to share our faith with everyone we meet. This is by far the greatest gift we can offer anyone. However, it is often the case that to offer only the Gospel is not enough! If a person is living in dire poverty and we fail to address the simple needs that stem from our understanding of human dignity, we have failed in our attempt to truly engage the person in dialogue. I very much doubt whether we will be able to effectively minister the truth of the Gospel on a long-term basis if this is the case. There is a social dimension to the Gospel that we must be sure to take into account when we proclaim it.

Acts 3:1-10
1 Peter and John were going up to the temple area for the three o’clock hour of prayer. 2 And a man crippled from birth was carried and placed at the gate of the temple called “the Beautiful Gate” every day to beg for alms from the people who entered the temple. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked for alms. 4 But Peter looked intently at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” 5 He paid attention to them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 Peter said, “I have neither silver nor gold, but what I do have I give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, rise and walk.” 7 Then Peter took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles grew strong. 8 He leaped up, stood, and walked around, and went into the temple with them, walking and jumping and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the one who used to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with amazement and astonishment at what had happened to him.

Psalms 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8-9
R: Rejoice, O hearts that seek the Lord.
1 Give thanks to the LORD, invoke his name; make known among the nations his deeds. 2 Sing to him, sing his praise, proclaim all his wondrous deeds. (R) 3Glory in his holy name; rejoice, O hearts that seek the LORD! 4 Look to the LORD in his strength; seek to serve him constantly. (R) 6 You descendants of Abraham, his servants, sons of Jacob, his chosen ones! 7 He, the LORD, is our God; throughout the earth his judgments prevail. (R) 8 He remembers forever his covenant which he made binding for a thousand generations, 9 which he entered into with Abraham and by his oath to Isaac. (R)

The story of the disciples traveling on the road to Emmaus is full of imagery and richness if only we give ourselves the time to reflect upon it properly. It is not possible to do justice to this passage in this short reflection other than to challenge you all to spend a few prayer times seeking out its richness of faith and symbolism. Let us pray that our hearts will burn within us as we do this precisely because we are opening ourselves up more deeply to the purifying and sanctifying grace of God in our reflections.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
This is the day the LORD has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Luke 24:13-35
13 That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, 14 and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. 15 And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, 16 but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. 17 He asked them, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” They stopped, looking downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?” 19 And he replied to them, “What sort of things?” They said to him, “The things that  happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. 21 But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. 22 Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning 23 and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. 24 Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! 26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures. 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther.  29 But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. 31 With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. 32 Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?” 33 So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them 34 who
were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

SABBATH

HEARTS ON FIRE!

The two disciples on the way to Emmaus are down in the dumps. They return to their original village. The evangelist tells us that they are discussing the events of the last few days: the arrest, crucifixion, death and reports of Jesus risen from the dead. In their depression, they debate and converse with each other. They are unaware of the one who walks beside them. They are so sad they cannot recognize Jesus, the one whom they are referring to in their conversation. Notice the reaction of the disciples when Jesus asks them what they are discussing. They are downcast. Are you the only one who does not know what has been happening? Are you blind? Are you unaware? In fact, Jesus is the only one who knows what is going on. As they talk to Jesus, they repeat the bad and sad news. Actually, they do not realize that it is good news!
Therefore, Jesus takes center stage as He also joins in the discussion, this time speaking of all the Scriptures referring to Him. Luke informs us that their hearts burn within as Jesus gives them the first ever catechism of the Catholic Church. I would love to have been there on the road to Emmaus. Only at the breaking of the bread, the familiar gesture at the Last Supper, do they realize it has been Jesus all along. How slow they have been to realize. Just when they get it, he disappears from their sight.
All of us are on a journey. Not to Emmaus but to the center of our hearts. We hear again Jesus speaking His Word to us. At every Eucharist, Jesus speaks His Word and breaks bread for us in the person of the priest. Jesus reveals His presence to us as He did at Emmaus. Our eyes need to be open to see Him truly in our midst under the guise of bread and His Word. Notice in the story the journey does not end. In fact, the two disciples are very excited to continue their journey — all the way back to Jerusalem. They are no longer sad but bearers of the Good News of God’s Love. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Does you heart burn in love for Jesus?

Come, Holy Sprit, enkindle within me the fire of your love in the breaking of the bread and Word in the Eucharist. Amen.

St. Winewald, pray for us.
