Negastar

“We have sinned in complaining against the Lord and you. Pray the Lord to take the serpents from us.” – Numbers 21:7

I was a whiner and complainer. If Sharon Cuneta is the Megastar, I claimed the title Negastar. It’s a character flaw I asked the Lord to correct. Maybe that’s why He sent me to His boot camp for wayward servants.
At the start of the Feast in Alabang in July 2009, the Council was plagued with harassments — illnesses, family emergencies, venue troubles, clergy problems, relationship difficulties. Besides that, I had secretariat ministry hitches piled on top of my deadlines.
I was also on Mommy duty. At the height of the AH1N1 scare, my elder son, boarding in far-off Quezon City, had fever. I rushed there after serving at the South Feast to nurse him. That same week, my younger son’s exhibit opened on the only night I had no meeting or practice. I ran around like a headless chicken.
After months of getting used to similar hyperacidity-inducing situations, I noticed that I complained less and dealt with glitches more serenely. The Lord was slowly dislodging my Negastar crown through the obstacle course He makes me run through. Lella Santiago

REFLECTION:
Complaining is showing ingratitude to the Lord.

Lord, open my eyes that I may see and appreciate Your blessings every day.

COMPANION

1st READING
Speaking ill of God is sinful, but so is speaking ill of others even when what you say is true. We do not have the right to speak ill of anyone unless there is a greater good at stake in the argument. That is, you need to reveal something you know in order to protect an innocent person from possible ill effects. Even then, we should try to avoid any unnecessary disclosure. We should always seek to protect the good name of a person to the greatest possible degree we can.

Numbers 21:4-9
4 From Mount Hor the children of Israel set out on the Red Sea road, to bypass the land of Edom. But with their patience worn out by the journey, 5 the people complained against God and Moses, “Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in this desert, where there is no food or water? We are disgusted with this wretched food!” 6 In punishment the LORD sent among the people saraph serpents, which bit the people so that many of them died. 7 Then the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned in complaining against the LORD and you. Pray the LORD to take the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people, 8 and the LORD said to Moses, “Make a saraph and mount it on a pole, and if anyone who has been bitten looks at it, he will recover.” 9 Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

Psalms 102:2-3, 16-18, 19-21
R: O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to you.
1 [2] O LORD, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to you. 2 [3] Hide not your face from me in the day of my distress. Incline your ear to me; in the day when I call, answer me speedily. (R) 15 [16] The nations shall revere your name, O LORD, and all the kings of the earth your glory, 16 [17] when the LORD has rebuilt Zion and appeared in his glory; 17 [18] when he has regarded the prayer of the destitute, and not despised their prayer. (R) 18 [19] Let this be written for the generation to come, and let his future creatures praise the LORD: 19 [20] “The LORD looked down from his holy height, from heaven he beheld the earth, 20 [21] To hear the groaning of the prisoners, to release those doomed to die.” (R)

Jesus is not holding anything back now. The Pharisees have demonstrated up to now that they are not willing to be reasonable listeners, and so, Jesus does not attempt to cushion what He has to say to them. There is no escaping the fact that Jesus considers all to be sinners and in need of His redemptive work, even, or maybe especially, the Pharisees. They may not accept this as the truth now, but there will come a time when they will. Let us pray that it is sooner rather than later in our lives.

VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL
The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower; all who come to him will live forever.

John 8:21-30
21 Jesus said to the Pharisees: “I am going away and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews said, “He is not going to kill himself, is he, because he said, ‘Where I am going you cannot come’?” 23 He said to them, “You belong to what is below, I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but I do not belong to this world. 24 That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.” 25 So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “What I told you from the beginning. 26 I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the world.” 27 They did not realize that he was speaking to them of the Father. 28 So Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me. 29 The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him.” 30 Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him.

SABBATH

GAZE ON CHRIST CRUCIFIED

Moses, tired from the people’s complaints, turns to the Lord for guidance and strength to deal with the headstrong people. God sends them serpents that cause deadly bites. For the pagans, the serpent was an ancient symbol of fertility for the soil. Among the many pagan rituals,  serpent worship was common.
The bronze serpent points to a type of figure that we find in Jesus: His death on the cross. We see many similarities in this story and the cross of Jesus in the New Testament. First, just as Moses had the bronze serpent lifted on the pole, so, too would Jesus be lifted high on the Cross.
Second, just as the Israelites were to look at the serpent and then find healing, so too those who gaze upon Jesus crucified would find healing.
Third, faith needed to be expressed as the Israelites looked at the serpent for healing. So, too, we in faith look upon Jesus and find healing for the wounds of sin.
The very thing that caused death — the snake and its bite — was the very thing that would cure — the serpent on the bronze pole. The very thing that caused our death — sin — would be laid upon Jesus. He takes upon Himself the sin of the world in order that we will be healed.
This spirituality of gazing on Christ crucified became quite common in the early Church. Many spiritual writers used this as their topic for  Gazing on Christ crucified would bring healing grace and strength of virtue. As those suffering gazed upon Christ, their burdens would become easy because the suffering is seen in the light of the suffering of Christ and thus became redemptive. St. John tells us that many would look upon the One they have pierced. This text was to be seen as fulfilled down through time immemorial as many have found strength in gazing upon the One who died for our sins. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do I look with faith upon Jesus crucified for healing?

Lord, You died in love for me. As I gaze upon You on the cross, may I find healing, peace and mercy. Amen.

St. Allerius, pray for us.
