AT WORK

But Jesus answered them, “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.” – John 5:17

“At work.” That’s my usual status in my Yahoo Messenger account.
At a time when Typhoon Ondoy was wreaking havoc in Metro Manila, there we were at the office, working overnight on our deadlines while monitoring the situation outside. In between, we’d pause for group or individual prayer in our seats or by our minialtar. At a time when I should be celebrating my birthday, there we were at the office, staying until the wee hours of the morning, packing the kits for the Kerygma Conference.
At a time when I should be attending my high school reunion, I was at the office, pounding on my computer keyboard instead of having a great time reminiscing with my classmates.
Come to think of it, in my past three years with Shepherd’s Voice, my work has taken the biggest chunk of my time. Still, I do not feel any regret at having taken this route. It is a joy doing what I believe God has designed me to do.
The Father’s work is non-stop, and I, His willing instrument, work with Him — whenever and wherever He chooses. Tess V. Atienza svp_tvatienza@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Does your work give you joy? If not, maybe it isn’t what God wants you to do.

Lead me, Lord, to Your purpose for my life. What do You want me to do?

COMPANION

1st READING

God is never far from us and any distance between us and Him is a result of our choices, namely sin! Too often, as a priest, I hear the sentiment that it is God’s fault that such and such happened and caused me all these problems. It is simply not true. We are either the remote or immediate cause of our problems, or if it is not us then it is another person’s sin affecting us that is the cause. God seeks to right the wrongs, not to cause them. Let us look to Him for the answers, not as the cause of our problems.

Isaiah 49:8-15
8 Thus says the LORD: In a time of favor I answer you, on the day of salvation I help you, to restore the land and allot the desolate heritages,9 saying to the prisoners: Come out! To those in darkness: Show yourselves! Along the ways they shall find pasture, on every bare height shall their pastures be. 10 They shall not hunger or thirst, nor shall the scorching wind or the sun strike them; for he who pities them leads them and guides them beside springs of water. 11 I will cut a road through all my mountains, and make my highways level. 12 See, some shall come from afar, others fromthe north and the west, and some from the land of Syene. 13 Sing out, O heavens, and rejoice, O earth, break forth into song, you mountains. For the LORD comforts his people and shows mercy to his afflicted. 14 But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” 15 Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.

Psalms 145:8-9, 13-14, 17-18
R: The Lord is gracious and merciful.
8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. (R) 13 The LORD is faithful in all his words and holy in all his works. 14 The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. (R) 17 The LORD is just in all his ways and holy in all his works. 18 The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. (R)

It is good to reflect upon this text (and a few others) and try to deepen our understanding of the unity of the Father and Son. It is their unity, expressed in the person of the Holy Spirit, that can inspire us to work for unity in our communities rather than settle for division and rancour. Unity is at the heart of the Gospel message as we are called into communion with God. How can we be in communion with God without being in communion with one another? We cannot! Let us seek unity above self-interest at all times.

VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL
I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord; whoever believes in me will never die.

John 5:17-30
17 Jesus answered them, “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.” 18 For this reason the Jews tried all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but he also called God his own father, making himself equal to God. 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, a son cannot do anything on his own, but only what he sees his father doing; for what he does, his son will do also. 20 For the Father loves his Son and shows him everything that he himself does, and he will show him greater works than these, so that you may be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also does the Son give life to whomever he wishes. 22 Nor does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to his Son, 23 so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes  in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not come to condemnation, but has passed from death to life. 25 Amen, amen, I say to you, the hour is coming and is now here when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to his Son the possession of life in himself. 27 And he gave him power to exercise judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not be amazed at this, because the hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and will come out, those who have done good deeds to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked deeds to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 “I cannot do anything on my own; I judge as I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.”

SABBATH

THE FATHER

Jesus is in dangerous territory and He knows it. He equates Himself on familiar terms with God the Father as His own father. To the Jewish mind, God as father to the individual was forbidden. No Jew would dare allow himself to be so familiar with the Father. They knew God is the Father of all, but no one had ultimate claim on God as their father. As Jesus spoke with them about the Father in intimate ways, they struggled with thoughts of how He could speak like that.
Jesus is using very odd language in referring to the Father. He speaks of working with the Father, listening to the Father, doing what the Father does and acting upon the will of the Father. This is all too much for the Jews and they would do anything to destroy a man who familiarizes himself in this way with the Father. The Jews judge Jesus as a blasphemer and deserves punishment, nothing less than death. Jesus is the One sent by the Father, a common theme that we see in the Gospel of John.
The theme of Jesus is the Father. It is like His pet topic. He cannot speak enough of the Father. Jesus delights that we can have the same relationship with the Father. With the insight of the resurrection, we can see what Jesus means in His relationship to the Father. We, too, have that same access to the Father through the death and resurrection of the Son. God the Father has given this authority to the Son that whoever believes in Him has eternal life. For John, believing is equivalent to having eternal life. Jesus is the image of the Father. He is the Word of the Father. To see Jesus is to see the Father. To follow Jesus is to follow the Father. To love Jesus is to love the Father.
Let us give thanks to Jesus for showing us the way to the Father. What an amazing gift we have in Jesus who opens to us the love and acceptance of the Father. Let us not be afraid to approach the Father through Jesus who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do you know the Father?

Lord Jesus, You are the loving image of the Father. Help us to love You and follow You, because in doing this, we love and follow the Father. Amen.

St. Rufina, pray for us.
