perfect afternoon

“I will live there with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.” – Ezekiel 37:27

It was a nice Saturday afternoon at the park. My two kids brought their new scooters. I had a new book.
“Kids, you may ride your scooters but don’t go too far,” I instructed them while I sat on the bench with my book, a donut and coffee. This bench would be my haven for the next 30 minutes. I didn’t mind the distractions around as I relished each relaxing minute.
Until I heard my daughter’s plea. “Papa, please help me!”
I immediately looked for her. She was not too far but was lying on the ground. She must have fallen off her scooter. I dropped everything and sprinted to help her. Thank God she only had a minor bruise.
I walked back to the bench and I found a dog feasting on my donut. My coffee spilled over and my book was stained with it. The scene made me smile. Truly, no ambience is too perfect to make me ignore my kids.
Similarly, our heavenly Father is always watching over us. He is there even before we cry for help. Alvin Fabella (alvinfabella@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Papa, Dad, Ama, Father – however you want to call Him. Rest assured He is always watching over you.

Heavenly Father, You are never far away from me. You watch over me at all times.  Thank You!

COMPANION

1st READING in one year

God is going to act decisively in the lives of His people and return them to their land. This prophecy can be taken literally, as the Jews read it as confirmation that the land given to their fathers is theirs forever and hence their welcoming of the state of Israel in 1948. As Christians, we read it as having immediate significance in the return of the people from exile in Babylon and then with the future significance speaking about the promise of heaven where all will be gathered as one in the Kingdom of God at the end of time.

Ezekiel 37:21-28
21 Thus says the Lord GOD: I will take the children of Israel from among the nations to which they have come, and gather them from all sides to bring them back to their land. 22 I will make them one nation upon the land, in the mountains of Israel, and there shall be one prince for them all. Never again shall they be two nations, and never again shall they be divided into two kingdoms. 23 No longer shall they defile themselves with their idols, their abominations, and all their transgressions. I will deliver them from all their sins of apostasy, and cleanse them so that they may be my people and I may be their God. 24 My servant David shall be prince over them, and there shall be one shepherd for them all; they shall live by my statutes and carefully observe my decrees. 25 They shall live on the land which I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where their fathers lived; they shall live on it forever, they, and their children, and their children’s children, with my servant David their prince forever. 26 I will make with them a covenant of peace; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them, and I will multiply them, and put my sanctuary among them forever. 27 My dwelling shall be with them; I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 28 Thus the nations shall know that it is I, the LORD, who make Israel holy, when my sanctuary shall be set up among them forever.

P S A L M

Jeremiah 31:10, 11-12, 13
R: The Lord will guard us, as a shepherd guards his flock.
10 Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, proclaim it on distant coasts, and say: He who scattered Israel, now gathers them together, he guards them as a shepherd his flock. (R) 11 The LORD shall ransom Jacob, he shall redeem him from the hand of his conqueror. 12 Shouting, they shall mount the heights of Zion, they shall come streaming to the LORD’s blessings the grain, the wine, and the oil, the sheep and the oxen. (R) 13 Then the virgins shall make merry and dance, and young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into joy, I will console and gladden them after their sorrows. (R)

G O S P E L

So often we look for a scapegoat to suffer for us. As Christians we accept that Jesus has this role; He took upon Himself the sins of all and died for us on the cross so that they would be forgiven. Apart from that, we should make no excuses for our sins and not seek to shift the blame to others. Let us be responsible and honest disciples accepting the requisite blame for our transgressions and repenting when necessary. We readily accept the praise for the things we do; so should we readily accept the blame for our sins and faults.

VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL
Cast away from you all the crimes you have committed, says the Lord, and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit.

John 11:45-56
45 Many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what Jesus had done began to believe in him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs. 48 If we leave him alone, all will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our land and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing, 50 nor do you consider that it is better for you that one man should die instead of the people, so that the whole nation may not perish.” 51 He did not say this on his own, but since he was high priest for that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, 52 and not only for the nation, but also to gather into one the dispersed children of God. 53 So from that day on they planned to kill him. 54 So Jesus no longer walked about in public among the Jews, but he left for the region near the desert, to a town called Ephraim, and there he remained with his disciples. 55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before Passover to purify themselves. 56 They looked for Jesus and said to one another as they were in the temple area, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast?”

my reflections
t h i n k : We readily accept the praise for the things we do; so should we readily accept the blame for our sins and faults.

SABBATH

GATHERING THE SCATTERED

The stage is set. The plan is put in motion. The high priest, Caiaphas, has spoken as the highest authority and he is about to rule that Jesus is to be killed.
The famous quote of Caiaphas that one should die that the whole nation might not perish is an extraordinary prophecy in itself. John comments that he is speaking as high priest, but reading between the lines we see the effect of our salvation at hand. Jesus is the savior of the world. His sacrifice upon the cross was so that we might not perish but endure to eternal life. His body was given up for the salvation of all. The comment of the evangelist was very fitting: that Jesus would die not only for the nation but to gather the scattered children of God. We are told in the Gospel that at this point of Jesus’ life, many are coming to Him. Apparently, this is seen as a great threat to the Romans and the Jews seek to remedy the situation at all costs. Hence, Jesus must be done away with.
We are not very far from Holy Week where the whole Church will trace the steps of the Master leading to His death. It will be a good exercise to read one of the Passion narratives this coming week to enter more deeply into the mystery of our salvation. The quote of Caiaphas makes for good meditation: “One man to die instead of the people so that the whole nation might not perish.” For Caiaphas, his interests were political. However, for us now, it means that we enjoy the benefits of Jesus’ death upon the cross. We are called to eternal life. God does not will that we suffer and die in our sins. Jesus has come that we may have life and have it to the full. We do not perish but have the opportunity to repent of our sins and accept this great gift of salvation that Jesus offers from the cross. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Jesus died on the cross to gather the scattered children of God.

Lord, I am grateful that You love me and gave Yourself for me. Amen.

St. Drogo, pray for us.
