HOLY MONDAY

SHINE YOUR LIGHT

“I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations.” – Isaiah 42:6

After we were hit by typhoon Ondoy, my college friends, Ofel and Loida, visited me in my house. They brought food, water, toiletries and other supplies. I thought that we would just have a chat but I was surprised when they asked me, “What do we do now? Where do you want to start?” I then realized that they were there to help in the cleaning. They even brought their working clothes and slippers. Ofel even tagged along her household help for extra manpower. And they continued to extend their help in the months that followed whenever their schedule allowed.
According to a Bible footnote, “part of Christ’s mission on earth was to demonstrate God’s righteousness and to be a light for the Gentiles.” Christ as the Servant-Messiah accomplished His mission quietly, not calling attention to Himself. Through His love and service, He was able to draw people to God.
Ondoy dimmed my hopes for a brighter future but my friends Ofel and Loida, and all those who helped us and showed concern in various ways, brought light and renewed hope to my life. They are truly God’s servants in the real sense of the word. We, too, are called to the same mission and to become a light ourselves. Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Do you know anyone who needs help? Take this opportunity to show God’s goodness and love through you.

Lord, let Your light shine in me so I can be a light myself.

COMPANION

1st READINGin one year

The four Servant Songs of Jesus from the writings of the prophet Isaiah that we will reflect upon this week are invitations to us to take seriously the Passion of Jesus in terms of how we, as individuals, embrace the call to lay down our lives in the service of others. It is not enough to speak and believe our faith as a creed for life – each of us must put our faith into practice through service of our neighbor. Service and sacrifice are the cutting edge of Christian life, not words and devotions.

Isaiah 42:1-7
1 Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my Spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, 2 not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. 3 A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, 4 until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching. 5 Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spreads out the earth with its crops, who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk on it. 6 I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, 7 to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

Psalms 27:1, 2, 3, 13-14
R: The Lord is my light and my salvation.
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid? (R) 2 When evildoers come at me to devour my flesh, my foes and my enemies themselves stumble and fall. (R) 3 Though an army encamp against me, my heart will not fear; though war be waged upon me, even then will I trust. (R) 13 I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD with courage; be stout-hearted, and wait for the LORD. (R)

To be physically able to see Jesus would be a tremendous blessing, but this is not really what the Greeks are asking for here. They want to be able to “see” Jesus in terms of understanding the message He proclaims. This is a much more important reality! How well do you and I understand our faith and comprehend the nature of God’s call upon our lives? In all probability the answer to this question is, “Not very well!” If this is the case then we need to be active in doing something about it. We need to seek a better understanding of our faith through prayer, study and service of God’s Word. How are you doing this in your life today?

VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL
Hail to you, our King; you alone are compassionate with our faults.

John 12:1-11
1 Six days before Passover Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 They gave a dinner for him there, and Martha served, while Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with him. 3 Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil made from genuine aromatic nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair; the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. 4 Then Judas the Iscariot, one [of] his disciples, and the one who would betray him, said, 5 “Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days’ wages and given to the poor?” 6 He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief and held the money bag and used to steal the contributions. 7 So Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Let her keep this for the day of my burial. 8 You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.” 9 The large crowd of the Jews found out that he was there and came, not only because of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 And the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus too, 11 because  many of the Jews were turning away and believing in Jesus because of him.

my reflections
t h i n k : Service and sacrifice are the cutting edge of Christian life, not words and devotions.

SABBATH

FRAGRANT OFFERING TO THE LORD

The woman takes a great risk as she enters the house that Jesus visits. She is ritually unclean, according to Jewish custom, because of her colorful life. As a woman used to engaging in physical intimacies with a man, she puts her life at risk of being expelled from the praying community. She does what is strictly taboo by letting down her hair in public, an abominable sight to those who witness this act. Nevertheless, does Jesus care?
For Jesus, this is a wonderful and affectionate act of love and worship. She has found that the man whom she anoints has forgiven her and He is unlike any other man she has known before. With the strength of affection, the woman’s display is nothing but a lavish gesture of devotion and thanksgiving. The room is filled with the fragrance of the oil. The disciples are aghast at the costliness of the act and Jesus accepts it all as part of the woman’s trust in the Lord. The act is prophetic, preparing the body of Jesus for its burial.
The woman gives us a perfect example of what it is to love the Lord, no matter what the cost. He has paid an enormous price in giving His life for us. What shall we give to the Lord in return for all the good He has done for us? In the scheme of things, the expensive nard is nothing compared to the cost Jesus has paid for us, the price of His blood. Let us be lavish in our affection and devotion to the Lord. Let us not be shy in showing Him the extent of love that is due to Him. As we enter the Holy Week, let us make a hundredfold return to the Lord for the favors He has done in our life. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
What will I offer to the Lord?

Lord, I offer my life to You as a living sacrifice of praise. Amen.

St. Agia, pray for us.
