DEEDS

“What I do, that is, the deeds my Father gave me to do, these speak on my behalf and show that the Father has sent me.” – John 5: 36

I believe in the power of words. Yet, there is so much truth that “actions speak louder!” I’ve been speaking about God now for more than half of my life. But somehow I gained more “credibility” when people started seeing the “proof” of what I have been saying.
Healing. Miracles. A strong family. An expanding and growing ministry. More forgiveness. More understanding. More service. More love. These things happen inspite of me — despite my failures, imperfections and sins. Clearly, it is God’s work.
Yet, like most servant-leaders, I, too, have my own share of detractors, critics and negative people who only see what’s wrong with me.
If before I would spend volumes of words and hours of my time defending myself, now I just direct them to the “deeds my Father gave me to do.”
Indeed, “these speak louder on my behalf” and show that God is working amazingly.
Now, what deeds do people see in you? Alvin Barcelona (kpreacheralvin@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
By your fruits – by your deeds – people will know who is at work in you. Do your actions reflect God’s love?

Grant me the grace, O Lord, to do great and mighty things in Your name. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

Moses must have had a very sure relationship with the Lord in order to plead the cause of the people with Him. I find it inspiring that Moses should intercede for the people in such a way. Let us all pray for a deep relationship with God, which will allow such audacity and daring in our faith walk and experience of God’s love.

Exodus 32:7-14
7 The LORD said to Moses, “Go down at once to your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, for they have become depraved. 8 They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them, making for themselves a molten calf and worshipping it, sacrificing to it and crying out, ‘This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!’ 9 I see how stiff-necked this people is,” continued the LORD to Moses. 10 “Let me alone, then, that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them. Then I will make of you a great nation.” 11 But Moses implored the LORD, his God, saying, “Why, O LORD, should your wrath blaze up against your own people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with such great power and with so strong a hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘With evil intent he brought them out, that he might kill them in the mountains and exterminate them from the face of the earth’? Let your blazing wrath die down; relent in punishing your people. 13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, and how you swore to them by your own self, saying, ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky; and all this land that I promised, I will give your descendants as their perpetual heritage.’ ” 14 So the LORD relented in the punishment he had threatened to inflict on his people.

Psalms 106:19-20, 21-22, 23
R: Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people.
19 Our fathers made a calf in Horeb and adored a molten image; 20 they exchanged their glory for the image of a grass-eating bullock. (R) 21 They forgot the God who had saved them, who had done great deeds in Egypt, 22 wondrous deeds in the land of Ham, terrible things at the Red Sea. (R) 23 Then he spoke of exterminating them, but Moses, his chosen one, withstood him in the breach to turn back his destructive wrath. (R)

Jesus affirms that John the Baptist’s light (the message of repentance and prophecy of the coming Messiah) is a mere reflection of His own. He, Jesus, is the source of all light and truth. The same is true for us as we proclaim the Gospel. We merely reflect and pass on the message and word of Jesus; we never proclaim or put ourselves forward as the message. One of the key points of discernment of the authenticity of a preacher’s message is whether or not he promotes the Gospel of Jesus or his own gospel.

VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL
God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life.

John 5:31-47
31 Jesus said to the Jews: “If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is not true. 32 But there is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that the testimony he gives on my behalf is true. 33 You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth. 34 I do not accept testimony from a human being, but I say this so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light. 36 But I have testimony greater than John’s. The works that the Father gave me to accomplish, these works that I perform testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me. 37 Moreover, the Father who sent me has testified on my behalf. But you have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38 and you do not have his word remaining in you, because you do not believe in the one whom he has sent. 39 You search the scriptures, because you think you have eternal life through them; even they testify on my behalf. 40 But you do not want to come to me to have life. 41 “I do not accept human praise; 42 moreover, I know that you do not have the love of God in you. 43 I came in the name of my Father, but you do not accept me; yet if another comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe, when you  accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father: the one who will accuse you is Moses, in whom you have placed your hope. 46 For if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he wrote about me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

CONFIDENCE IN GOD

Who would want to be Moses? God asks Moses to free the Israelites from the stubborn hand of the Pharaoh. God challenges him to divide the sea in two. He is to put up with complaints of the people for 40 years in the desert. Moreover, he has to put up with their disobedience when they turn from the law and the love of God in worshipping a cow. Who would want his job? Could you imagine the reaction of Moses? He is having a pleasant conversation with God on the mountain. He is about to receive the commandments and stipulation from the hand of God. God interrupts and says, “Hey, you better go down and see what your people are doing. They are running amok and worshipping the cow!”
Moses has a way with God. He cools the temper of God. He puts it back to God — the people are His responsibility. He reminds God that He has brought them out of Egypt. He tells God to calm down and everything will be OK.
The First Reading makes a good meditation material for this Lent. We are in the fourth week of Lent and by now, you must be in good terms with God. You have come to a place of trust in a God who loves you and listens to you always. Moses had a great confidence and trust in God. He conversed with God as with a friend. God calls us to be friends and to relate with Him as one in whom we can trust and confide in. And in the end God relented in the punishment that He has threatened to bring to the people.
Intercession is one of the gifts we can develop in our spiritual life. Moses interceded before God on behalf of his people. How did he do that? He reminded God of His promises (as if God needs reminding). He questioned the motives of God (as if God needs questioning). He made God reconsider that if He would carry out His threat, what kind of God would He be in the eyes of the people? Moses is very bold in his relationship with God. Moreover, it seems that God can handle this. He wants us to be bold with Him, to have confidence and trust that He will answer us when we call upon His name.Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Is God calling you to intercede for someone or a particular situation?

Remember Your people whom You have called by name. Answer us and save us, O Lord.

Blessed Ursulina, pray for us.
