UNDAUNTED

The father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live,” and he and his whole household came to believe. – John 4:53

The wrath of typhoon Ondoy made the waters in Laguna Lake overflow, uprooting our fruit-bearing trees and demolishing the bamboo fence surrounding our house. Only then did I realize that we were along the outskirts of the lake.
I was with my mother then, far from my children who were at home. I trembled just imagining how they scampered to safety when the waters came in.
The evacuation center became their refuge for several days but they opted to return home due to congestion, lack of facilities and fear of the outbreak of various diseases. Throughout their ordeal and with no means of communication, all I could do was pray for them. I never prayed so hard in my life — even more than when I was sentenced to life imprisonment!
With the Lord, we victoriously survived that ordeal. My children and I never lost faith in His power as our God and Savior. We may have lost a lot of material things as a consequence of the typhoons but they can never equal the love, protection and life that my family enjoys as a blessing from God! REFLECTION:
Those who trust and have faith in Jesus without any doubt are saved from harm and peril.

Lord Jesus, thank You so much for the love You poured upon my loved ones. Praise and glory to You, Jesus, my God and Savior!

COMPANION

1st READING

Wherever the Lord’s blessings abound there will be joy and gladness. My experience of conversion reflects this truth when I saw a certain joy and peace and love in a youth group in my parish and my overwhelming response to those things was, “I want what they have!” This is why our witness of life as Christians is so important. If we truly reflect to the world our experience of His love and mercy, it will attract others to the Gospel.

Isaiah 65:17-21
17 Thus says the LORD: Lo, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind. 18 Instead, there shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create; for I create Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight; 19 I will rejoice in Jerusalem and exult in my people. No longer shall the sound of weeping be heard there, or the sound of crying; 20 no longer shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not round out his full lifetime; he dies a mere youth who reaches but a hundred years, and he who fails of a hundred shall be thought accursed. 21 They shall live in the houses they build, and eat the fruit of the vineyards they plant.

Psalms 30:2, 4, 5-6, 11-13
R: I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
1 [2] I will extol you, O LORD, for you drew me clear and did not let my enemies rejoice over me. 3 [4] O LORD, you brought me up from the nether world; you preserved me from among those going down into the pit. (R) 4 [5] Sing praise to the LORD, you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. 5 [6] For his anger lasts but a moment; a lifetime, his goodwill. At nightfall, weeping enters in, but with the dawn, rejoicing. (R) 10 [11] “Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper.” 11 [12] You changed my mourning into dancing; 12 [13] O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks. (R)

G O S P E L

There is no power in the world that Jesus cannot overcome with His love and mercy. The devil has been defeated by the love and obedience of Jesus to His Father. We should learn from this truth. If we remain in the Lord’s love and are consistently obedient to His will, we will discover that God will use us to perform His mighty works in the world. This is the experience of the saints – let it be ours as well! It will be if we are willing to surrender all to God.

VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL
Seek good and not evil so that you may live, and the LORD will be with you. in one year

John 4:43-54
43 At that time Jesus left (Samaria) for Galilee. 44 For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his native place. 45 When he came into Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, since they had seen all he had done in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves had gone to the feast. 46 Then he returned to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. Now there was a royal official whose son was ill in Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, who was near death. 48 Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” 49 The royal official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus said to him, “You may go; your son will live.” The man believed what Jesus said to him and left. 51 While he was on his way back, his slaves met him and told him that his boy would live. 52 He asked them when he began to recover. They told him, “The fever left him yesterday, about one in the afternoon.” 53 The father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live,” and he and his whole household came to believe. 54 Now this was the second sign Jesus did when he came to Galilee from Judea.

SABBATH

YOUR SON WILL LIVE

We read in the Gospel that this is the second sign Jesus performed in Galilee. What was the first? You will remember that it was when He changed water into wine at the wedding feast.
Jesus seems to dismiss the request of the official: “Unless you see signs you will not believe.” Signs and wonders were common in the life and ministry of Jesus. They were there to confirm the faith of the believer. Signs still exist today. They are not old-fashioned events that are part of a bygone era. However, signs should not be the “be all” and the “end all.” There is more to faith than signs and wonders.
The sign that the Messiah has come and that the Kingdom of God is near is in the person, life and ministry of Jesus. No other sign needed. St. John of the Cross says God has spoken and there is no other word needed to be spoken. Jesus, the Word made flesh, is the final and definitive sign and word for all.
The faith of the royal official is to be noted here. He does not ask anything spectacular from Jesus, only that He come and visit his son and heal him. As a commander used to giving and receiving commands, he simply heeds the words of Jesus and believes that his son will live. On the way home, he discovers that his son is truly alive, thanks to the word of Jesus. What a tremendous faith this man exhibits before Jesus. He takes Jesus at His word and his son is freed from sickness. Because of this, his entire household came to believe in Jesus, their faith confirmed through the witness of the son’s health and the testimony of the official.
These days, we need to ponder the words of Jesus. His words are spirit and life. We need to heed the words of Jesus to speak life into us. As we practice our disciplines of Lent, let us ask the Lord to heal us. Let us hear again His words of life: “You will live.” Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Jesus is the Lord of life. Where must He breathe life into you?

Lord, speak Your word of life to me that I may live again. Amen.

St. Plato, pray for us.
