MY HANGNAIL

There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. – Mark 5:25

When I was a teen, I had a lingering hangnail in my right big toe. It lasted for two years. The hangnail kept re-growing, puncturing my wound again and again. The wound got infected.
One day, my mother scared me to death and said that if the wound doesn’t get well, we might have to cut off my toe. So I asked a doctor to pull out my entire toenail. I still remember the day very well. How could I forget the big metal pliers? But it worked. My wound became free to heal by itself. What lasted for two years took only a few days to heal.
Friend, the hurt in your heart is as real as a wound in your body. Your anger, if it stays too long, becomes  bitterness. It infects the wound. Soon, your inner wound becomes deeper. If the wound continues, it will end up amputating a part of you, little by little, until it kills you.
God invented the greatest cleansing ointment in the world — forgiveness. He uses it all the time. He never hangs on to old hurts. Once you forgive, your wound starts to heal. Forgiveness doesn’t heal the wound instantly. You’ll still feel the pain, but it lessens over time. Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you nurturing a hurt in your heart? Why not let it go now and start the process of healing?

Lord, it isn’t easy to forgive. Please grant me the grace to let go of my hurts and to forgive the people who have wronged me.

COMPANION

1st READING

Here we are encouraged to persevere in our faith until the end. It seems that the author of this Letter believes that death in resisting sin is better than giving in to sin no matter what type of sin we are considering. Herein lies a truth that is very important for us to grasp fully – nothing is more important in the face of temptation than denying it! There is no real excuse for sin, ever. We must seek to put it to death completely.

Hebrews 12:1-4
1 Brothers and sisters: Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us 2 while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. 3 Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. 4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.

P S A L M

Psalm 22:26-27, 28, 30, 31-32
R: They will praise you, Lord, who long for you.
25 [26] I will fulfill my vows before those who fear him. 26 [27] The lowly shall eat their fill; they who seek the LORD shall praise him: “May your hearts be ever merry!” (R) 27 [28] All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD; all the families of the nations shall bow down before him. 29 [30] To him alone shall bow down all who sleep in the earth; before him shall bend all who go down into the dust. (R) And to him my soul shall live; 30 [31] my descendants shall serve him. Let the coming generation be told of the LORD 31 [32] that they may proclaim to a people yet to be born the justice he has shown. (R)

Jesus is not concerned about the limits people seem to think He has. He knows that as His will is united with His Father’s will, that whatever He asks His Father will be given to Him when it comes to healing the sick or even raising the dead! Did He heal the girl or raise her from the dead? It does not really matter; all that matters is that she is alive! It is important that we focus on the truth that Jesus both heals and raises people from death (there is no doubt of this in the case of Lazarus [John 11]), and that we align our lives with His will so that we will work with His power and not against it.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Mark 5:21-43
21 When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed close to the sea. 22 One of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came forward. Seeing him he fell at his feet 23 and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, “My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.” 24 He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him. 25 There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. 26 She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew worse. 27 She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak. 28 She said, “If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.” 29 Immediately her flow of blood dried up. She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who has touched my clothes?” 31 But his disciples said to him, “You see how the crowd is pressing upon you, and yet you ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 The woman, realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction.” 35 While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official’s house arrived and said, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?” 36 Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” 37 He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. 38 When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 So he went in and said to them, “Why this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40 And they ridiculed him. Then he put them all out. He took along the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was. 41 He took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” 42 The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. [At that] they were utterly astounded. 43 He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat.

THE MYSTERY OF JESUS: RELATIONSHIPS
The twin stories we have in the Gospel today give us a glimpse into the mystery of Jesus.
A crowd follows Jesus on His way back to Galilee. Jairus, a synagogue official, approaches Jesus to plead Him to heal his critically ill 12-yearold daughter. Jesus says nothing to him; the Lord simply goes with him quietly. That is enough.
But their steps are halted by another suffering — that of a woman who has been bleeding for 12 years already. That means that she started bleeding on the same year Jairus’s critically ill daughter was born. The sufferings mirror each other.
The Gospel tells us that the woman already spent all that she had in search of healing but to no avail. Her disease renders her and all those whom she touches as ritually unclean. Today, she touches Jesus. That is enough.
Jesus turns around, looking for whoever touched Him and asks, “Who touched Me?” He feels the suffering ofa desperate father; why should He not feel the suffering of a woman who has been bleeding for 12 years?
The happy event of her healing is interrupted by messengers from Jairus’s house: his daughter has stopped breathing. This time, Jesus finally talks to Jairus: “Be not afraid; just believe.”
With His three disciples and the girl’s parents, Jesus holds the deceased child by the hand and commands her, “Little girl, I tell you, rise!” And she rises not only from the mattress of sickness but from the world of the dead as well.
As Jesus gives back the girl to her parents, He tells them to give her something to eat. It shows us how thoughtful Jesus is. The dead is no more. Feed the living. After all, relationships are built and nourished best in table fellowships.
“Who touched Me?” “Give her something to eat.” These statements are both about creating relationships. And that is what Jesus values most: our relationship with God and with one another. Often, our relationships need healing just like the bleeding woman or need to be restored to life like the little girl. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
How are my relationships? Are they Christ-centered?

Thank You, Jesus, for blessing my relationships. Where they need healing, please intervene and heal them. Where they need life, please touch them and make them life-giving. Amen.

St. Cinnia, pray for us.
