DIDACHE

VERY MUCH WILLING !

Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” – Mark 1:41

When William was two years old, he disobediently wandered from home and got lost. His parents frantically searched for him. Finally, to everyone’s relief, they spotted their tearful boy and carried him safely home.
Days later, William overheard his mother relate this incident to a visitor. When she reached the part where they went out searching for him, William began to relive the story. “Mommy, Mommy!” he sobbed. “Did you ever find me?” Surprised and deeply touched by his doubt, she embraced him and said, “Of course, my child! Don’t you remember that happy moment? See, you’re with us now, and we’ll make sure that you always are.” That comforted William, because he took her at her word.
The past year was a whirlwind for me. I lost my bearings here and there, but hey! I’m still here, reading God’s Word. Will I make it through this year? Friend, we were lost and God has already found us! It’s not “us holding on to God,” but “God holding on to us” that forms the basis of our security.
He’s very much willing to bless us this year! And the years to come! Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
How do you feel about 2011? For your information, God is excited for you this year!

Father, let me remember Your faithfulness in the years that passed. You were always there and You will always be here for me. Thank You.

COMPANION

1st READING

We should be on guard against wickedness and evil that spring up in our minds. We must guard our thoughts against all sorts of sin. Most sins, if not all of it, begin with thoughts. If we can keep our minds under the control of the Holy Spirit, we will go a long way towards becoming holy.

Hebrews 3:7-14
7 The Holy Spirit says: “Oh, that today you would hear his voice, 8 “Harden not your hearts as at the rebellion in the day of testing in the desert, 9 where your ancestors tested and tried me and saw my works 10 for forty years. Because of this I was provoked with that generation and I said, “They have always been of erring heart, and they do not know my ways.” 11 As I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter into my rest.” ’ ” 12 Take care, brothers, that none of you may have an evil and unfaithful heart, so as to forsake the living God. 13 Encourage yourselves daily while it is still “today,” so that none of you may grow hardened by the deceit of sin. 14 We have become partners of Christ if only we hold the beginning of the reality firm until the end.

P S A L M

Psalm 95:6-7, 8-9, 10-11
R: If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
6 Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us. 7 For he is our God, and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides. (R) Oh, that today you would hear his voice: 8 “Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the desert, 9 where your fathers tempted me; they tested me though they had seen my works. (R) 10 Forty years I was wearied of that generation, I said: “This people’s heart goes astray, they do not know my ways. 11 Therefore I swore in my anger: “They shall never enter my rest.” (R)

G O S P E L

Let us never doubt the capacity and power of God to heal. Let us always believe in His goodness towards us even in the midst of trial and suffering as it is then that He is closest to us. Let us pray for the grace to be submissive to His will as we will only then discover what it truly means to be His disciple, and in walking in His ways, the wonders of a relationship with Him.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Jesus preached the Gospel of the Kingdom and cured every disease among the people.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Mark 1:40-45
40 A leper came to him and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” 42 The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. 43 Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. 44 Then he said to him, “See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.” 45 The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

SABBATH

Will-driven Life
When I was young, my mother had a hard time making me eat vegetables. Just like many other kids, I wanted hotdog, fried chicken and any food of the meat variety. I never liked vegetables and fish.
Growing up, I became more conscious of what I ate. While I never really liked vegetables and fish, I willed to eat them. Today, I notice that while I don’t necessarily avoid taking meat, I find myself more inclined to order a fish meal with vegetables on the side when I eat out. And I discovered that since I willed to include fish and vegetables in my diet, I’m beginning to like them.
Today in the Gospel, we hear the leper bringing a request to Jesus, “If You will to do so, You can cure me.” Notice that the leper did not express uncertainty over the capability of Jesus to cure him. Otherwise, he would have said, “If You can do so, cure me.”
While willing and liking are related human experiences, there is a big difference between them. Willing is active, liking is passive. Willing is to choose to do something. Liking is to be drawn to something. Willing, therefore, is purposeful. Liking is capricious and whimsical. And because liking is a function of the emotion, it varies from day to day, from moment to moment. To will is to decide to do something regardless of the presence or absence of pleasant emotions. To like is to be drawn to action only with the presence of pleasant emotions or sensations. Can you imagine yourself being like-driven? How many times did you dislike waking from bed, going to work, preparing food for the family, studying or going to church? Most probably you will accomplish nothing.
Achievers do not always like what they do. But they are winners because they will to do it anyway. Remember the principle: motion precedes emotion. Willing is motion. Liking is emotion. Is there something or someone you dislike? Will it and soon you will like it. Or at least, you will dislike him less. And you can go from there. Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
Are you capricious and whimsical in your decisions and actions? What drives you? Are you will-driven or likedriven?

Lord, You are the source of true goodness. Draw my heart to You that in all things and at all times, I may will what You please. Amen.

St. Erbin, pray for us.
