A BUDDING CHURCH

“Yet once it is sown, springs up to become the largest shrubs…. ” – Mark 4: 32

In 2003, we were able to build three cell groups in three squatter areas of the parish. They are neighbors who bond together weekly to share the Word of God as part of the Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC). It’s a priority project of our bishop for integral evangelization.
By the end of 2009, we had commissioned almost 60 leaders to help in the BEC of the parish, now subdivided into BEC strategic areas: seven zones (300-500 families) and 44 kawans(50-299 families) in preparation for a full-blown evangelization program.
Slowly but surely! Three seeds were planted in 2003. The buds had sprouted by 2009. In less than 50 years, with God’s grace, it will “spring up to become a large shrub” as Scripture promised. Hopefully, by then, the active participation of more than 50 percent of our parishioners will be evident. Cristy Galang (cristy_cc@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Am I aware of the thrust of the Catholic Church, its direction and what it needs from us?

Lord, You’re doing a great job of keeping Your Church alive. Truly, You are the Master Builder. Help me, Lord, to be flexible enough to say yes and be part of Your team when You need me. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

There is no doubt in my mind that Christians, and the Catholic Church in particular, are under attack from secularizing forces. The things said about Christianity in the media would not be said about other religions without creating near riots. As Christians, we need to stand firm according to what we believe and know to be true so that the witness we give to the world will be uncompromised. This is our duty and calling and, more than that, it is what the world needs – the truth – not some sort of wishy-washy, feel-good sentimental talk about how we feel.

Hebrews 10:32-39
32 Remember the days past when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a great contest of suffering. 33 At times you were publicly exposed to abuse and affliction; at other times you associated yourselves with those so treated. 34 You even joined in the sufferings of those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, knowing that you had a better and lasting possession. 35 Therefore, do not throw away your confidence; it will have great recompense. 36 You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what he has promised. 37 “For, after just a brief moment, he who is to come shall come; he shall not delay. 38 But my just one shall live by faith, and if he draws back I take no pleasure in him.” 39 We are not among those who draw back and perish, but among those who have faith and will possess life.

P S A L M

Psalm 37:3-4, 5-6, 23-24, 39-40
R: The salvation of the just comes from the Lord.
3 Trust in the LORD and do good, that you may dwell in the land and enjoy security. 4 Take delight in the LORD, and he will grant you your heart’s requests. (R) 5 Commit to the LORD your way; trust in him, and he will act. 6 He will make justice dawn for you like the light; bright as the noonday shall be your vindication. (R) 23 By the LORD are the steps of a man made firm, and he approves his way. 24 Though he fall, he does not lie prostrate, for the hand of the LORD sustains him. (R) 39 The salvation of the just is from the LORD: he is their refuge in time of distress. 40 And the LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him. (R)

It is God’s work to convert people and transform their lives. As much as a preacher and teacher can convince people of the truth of the Gospel, it is still only the Holy Spirit who has the power to convict us of these truths such that we will be willing to live and die for them. Open my heart, Lord, to the truth of the Gospel so that my mind and heart would be truly formed in all that is good and perfect.
Exodus 34-36
ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Mark 4:26-34
26 Jesus said to the crowds: “This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land 27 and would sleep and rise night and day and the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. 28 Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 And when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come.” 30 He said, “To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? 31 It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. 32 But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.” 33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them as they were able to understand it. 34 Without parables he did not speak to them, but to his own disciples he explained everything in private.

SABBATH

Discouraged?
Were you ever discouraged? Did you ever reach the point of giving up? Did you ever say or think along these lines: “It’s useless to go to confession because I don’t see any progress. I always commit the same mistakes and sins again and again. It seems my faith has not grown at all over the years.”
If these or similar questions have crossed your mind, listen to Jesus’ parables about seeds, especially the one about the mustard seed in today’s Gospel passage.
Of course, Jesus spoke, first of all, about His new community. It was a very small group of not-so-educated Galilean fishermen who were supposed to spread the message of their Master all over the world. That seemed rather impossible for them. But Jesus assures them that, however small the beginnings, the community will grow.
He also knew how discouraged His disciples will be when He died on the cross and not be with them anymore. Again, the parable of the mustard seed gave them encouragement. And so does this short story encourage us when we feel helpless in the face of weaknesses and apparent failure.
Sometimes we look at saints and think: I never can be like them. But we forget that everything, even sanctity, has a small beginning. Saints were not born saints but were weak human beings like you and me. Remember: No tree emerges full grown. Even the mighty mahogany tree emerges from a tiny seed.
The seed of holiness was sown into our hearts when we were baptized and surely has grown over the years. We need patience and trust that the powerful seed, the Word of God, will grow in us and lead us to the goal we envision — a holy life.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Am I discouraged when I look at my faith? Do I expect too much and so lack realism and trust in the power of God?

Lord, I believe; help my unbelief. Give me more trust in Your powerful love to overcome discouragement and move on slowly but surely to where You have called me.

St. James the Hermit, pray for us.
