UNDERESTIMATING GOD ’S POWER

Jesus immediately knew in his mind what they were thinking to themselves, so he said, “Why are you thinking such things in your hearts?” – Mark 2:8

Melissa had her heart badly broken a few years back by a cheating boyfriend. She was partially blaming God for her misery. “How could God allow that to happen to me?” she asked. “Why did He choose him for me, only to take him away?” She added that she has since avoided going to church because she feels bad towards God. With God surely knowing that, she believes He will not welcome her.
I saw the old me in Melissa. In the past, instead of seeking God’s healing, I drowned myself in misery and underestimated His power to forgive and to renew me. I thought I could fix my life. It took years for me to truly believe that only Jesus could fix me up. It was a journey worth sharing to Melissa. She was crying when I reminded her that God didn’t want her to be unhappy, and that He can heal her, no matter how broken she is.
Whenever you start to doubt the healing power of God’s love, imagine Jesus asking you, “Why are you thinking such things in your hearts?”
May you never doubt His power to heal your life. Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you broken? God is the greatest healer. Have you sought His help? If not, what’s stopping you?

Forgive me, Lord Jesus, for the times I doubted Your love for me.

COMPANION

1st READING

God helps those who help themselves. This is an old adage we always need to be reminded of. It does not mean that God waits for us to make the first move but that He cooperates with all that we do. He makes the first move, and what follows from that will depend upon our response. If we do nothing to accept the gift of salvation we will not be saved. If we welcome the gift, we will be quickly drawn into a life of holiness.

Hebrews 4:1-5, 11
1 Let us be on our guard while the promise of entering into his rest remains, that none of you seem to have failed. 2 For in fact we have received the good news just as they did. But the word that they heard did not profit them, for they were not united in faith with those who listened. 3 For we who believed enter into that rest, just as he has said: “As I swore in my  wrath, ‘They shall not enter into my rest,’ ” and yet his works were accomplished at the foundation of the world. 4 For he has spoken somewhere about the seventh day in this manner, “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works”; 5 and again, in the previously mentioned place, “They shall not enter into my rest.” 11 Therefore, let us strive to enter into that rest, so that no one may fall after the same example of disobedience.

Psalm 78:3, 4, 6-7, 8
R: Do not forget the works of the Lord!
3 What we have heard and know, and what our fathers have declared to us, 4 we will declare to the generation to come the glorious deeds of the LORD and his strength. (R) 6 That they, too, may rise and declare to their sons 7 that they should put their hope in God, and not forget the deeds of God but keep his commands. (R) 8 And not be like their fathers, a generation wayward and rebellious, a generation that kept not its heart steadfast nor its spirit faithful toward God. (R)

G O S P E L

How serious are you about following God’s will? What are you willing to do in order to place yourself at the feet of Jesus to listen closely to His word for your life? These are serious questions that we all have to ponder and give an answer to. However, our answer will be expressed in deeds, not words. Words are cheap and easy – it is our actions that really count towards becoming a witness to the Gospel.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
A great prophet has arisen in our midst and God has visited his people.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Mark 2:1-12
1 When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it became known that he was at home. 2 Many gathered together so that there was no longer room for them, not even around the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4 Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him. After they had broken through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there asking themselves, 7 “Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming. Who but God alone can forgive sins?” 8 Jesus immediately knew in his mind what they were thinking to themselves, so he said, “Why are you thinking such things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, pick up your mat and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth” — 11 he said to the paralytic, “I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home.” 12 He rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away in the sight of everyone. They were all astounded and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.”

SABBATH

Restless

The clock struck 2:00 a.m. and I was still wide awake. I kept turning in bed. I tried all sleeping positions but nothing worked. I thought maybe it was my bed sheet, so I took a fresh one from my cabinet. Same result. Could it be the clothes I was wearing? I slipped into a new pair of pajamas and my most comfortable shirt to no avail. So, at 3:30 I decided to visit our oratory upstairs and spend a few silent moments with the Lord. By dint of inspiration, my day flashed before me. That was it. It was not a particularly good day for me.
I kept looking for a reason for my restlessness from without, only to discover that the reason was something from within.
In the first reading today, the letter to the Hebrews spoke about the people “not entering into God’s rest.” The Biblical “rest” is an allusion to the rest of Genesis 1 where it said that God rested after the work of Creation. This “rest” is not physical. God did not grow tired. The rest indicated satisfaction and fulfillment over the accomplishment of the Divine Will as indicated by the line, “and God looked at what He has created and it was very good” (Genesis 1:31). The need to enter into God’s “rest” is a metaphorical way of rendering that disobedience to God’s will is the reason for the chosen people’s inability to enter the Promised Land.
The Gospel for today speaks of the same. A paralytic was brought to Jesus in the hope that he would be given rest from the ailment that had been torturing him for years. To their surprise, Jesus addressed the internal paralysis first, “My son, your sins are forgiven.” Only later did He address his physical malady, “Pick up your mat and go home.”
Have you been losing sleep? Have you been restless lately? It’s neither your bed nor your sleepwear. Do not look for the reason without. Look for the reason within.Fr. Joel O.Jason
