Our Manual for Life

Indeed, God’s word is living and effective… it judges the reflections and thoughts of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12

Whenever we buy a new set of appliances, the first thing we refer to is the manual of operations. When we do not use the manual, it takes us longer and is sometimes confusing to operate the appliance. Worse, we might even destroy the new gadget.
Such is God’s Word in our lives. When God created us, He also included a manual of operations. That’s why in my small sharing group, I use the Bible as my reference manual. When we share about our day-to-day activities, I always try to relate how God’s Word can help us through our daily routine. When one of my group member shares a problem, I offer a solution from God’s Word.
When my group mates discover that advice from the Bible is helpful and meaningful, their response is gratitude for this Manual of Operations. A natural consequence of thankfulness is a deeper relationship with the Author of the Holy Book — God Himself. Then our thought patterns will be aligned with the Creator and our lives will be on the right path. Donna España (donna.espana@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
When was the last time you opened and read your Bible? Be excited to read and know that God has so much in store for you!

Thank You, Lord, for drawing me closer to You each time I read and live for Your Word. Inspire me more so I can, in turn, inspire many.

COMPANION

1st READING
Never underestimate the power and precision of the Word of God. We must always be ready to listen to God’s Word as it is food for eternal life. I am sure that we all desire eternal life with God; the question is, “Are we willing to allow His word to set the agenda for our lives?” Herein lies the path to eternal life – the path of truth; the path of His will for us. Let us seek to grow in our love of the Scriptures every day.

Hebrews 4:12-16
12 The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. 13 No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account. 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin. 16 So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.

P S A L M

Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 15
R: Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.
7 [8] The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul; the decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. (R) 8 [9] The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the command of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eye. (R) 9 [10] The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, all of them just. (R) 14 [15] Let the words of my mouth and the thought of my heart find favor before you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. (R)

G O S P E L

Jesus associates with rich and poor, saint and sinner alike. Jesus does not exclude anyone from His ministry — the offering of the gift of salvation. We must imitate this fairness and impartiality in the way we proclaim and live the Gospel. It is not up to us to decide the worthiness of an individual for the gift of salvation as we are all unworthy and it is only the love and mercy of God that chooses to overlook this fact. God can forgive all faults and failings; He is far more merciful than any of us. Let us leave the judging to Him.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
The Lord sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, and to proclaim liberty to captives.
R: Alleluia, alleluia
in one year
Mark 2:13-17
13 Jesus went out along the sea. All the crowd came to him and he taught them. 14 As he passed by, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus, sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. 15 While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners sat with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many who followed him. 16 Some scribes who were Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors and said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 Jesus heard this and said to them [that], “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

SABBATH

“Doctor , Doctor , I Am Sick ”

In the Second National Congress for Priests held in January 2010, I met a priest friend of mine whom I had not seen for years. “Hi Joel, good to see you!” he said excitedly. “Yes, good to see you, too,” I chirped back. I quickly glanced at his ID because for a moment I did not recognize him. He had grown huge. He looked like he was carrying 225 pounds on his 5’5” frame. He was with his foster family and the lady with him good-naturedly said, “Fr. Joel, nakakatuwa po siya, ang takaw-takaw. Naglambing pa po ng KFC bucket meal kagabi for midnight snack daw” (Fr. Joel, he’s so cute, he has such a huge appetite. He even ordered a KFC bucket meal last night for midnight snack).
I couldn’t forget that line from the lady. As far as I know, greed and its kindred gluttony are still part of the seven capital sins. The renewal of Moral Theology in Vatican II has not downgraded its status as a disordered desire. But we moderns have.
Psychology journals now even speak of a so-called “mild addiction.” I have a friend with a drinking problem who calls it his “daily fix.” Included in this mild addictions are gluttony, chain smoking and heavy drinking. But whether it is light or heavy, it is still an addiction. It’s a form of sickness. Treating them lightly only gives a false sense that we are doing OK when in fact we’re getting sicker by the day.
Today in the Gospel, Jesus reminds us, “People who are healthy do not need a doctor; sick people do.” It was a subtle but stinging remark directed to those religious leaders of His time who choose to be blind to their own moral sickness. Today we have the same problem. We don’t even know that we are sick because we invent names like “mild addiction” or “daily fix” to avoid calling ourselves to task. Companies who make contraceptives even market a pill with anti-pimple ingredient, taking advantage of the insecurities of the youth. What’s next? A pill fortified with beta-carotene? We are becoming sick and we do not even know it. Jesus, remind my heart.Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
When you see grossly overweight children, do you find it cute? Do you justify your disordered desires by calling them “mild addictions”?

Lord Jesus, more than the physical, I need spiritual healing in my heart, in my desires, in my will. O Hesus, hilumin mo, aking sugatang puso. Amen.

St. Sawl, pray for us.
