Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul

just like you

Jesus said to them, “Go throughout the whole world and preach the Gospel to all mankind.” – Mark 16:15

My friend called me up one night and yelped, “Yo my man, I want to have prayer life, man! But I’m lazy in praying, man! But I really want to grow, man! Do you have a prayer style for lazy people who want to grow in prayer life, man?”
To cut his monologue, I replied, “Yo, dude! I’ll share with you a three-minute prayer that will rock you, man! Get a piece of paper and a pen. Before sleeping, take a minute to prayerfully write down all your misgivings, wrongdoings or sins. The next minute, write down all the good things you’ve done within the day. And on the third minute, write down your dreams, aspirations and ideals.” “Cool!” he chirped.
In the course of one year, my friend who was a smoker, drunkard, womanizer and violent drug addict changed. He is now a Catholic community leader! I brought him to the Lord through the Catholic Life in the Spirit Seminar and the Holy Spirit overhauled him.
If I didn’t have an “old life” like he did, it would have been difficult to understand where he was coming from and to lead him to Jesus. Obet Cabrillas (kpreacherobet@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Is my conversion and new life a loudspeaker for the Gospel?

Lord, may my life speak loudly for You.

COMPANION

1st READING

Paul’s life testimony is as amazing as it is true. It is difficult to understand what must have gone on in his heart as he turned from being a persecutor of the Christians to one of their greatest apologists and preachers. Paul’s conversion is commemorated precisely as it symbolizes the power of the Holy Spirit to achieve just about anything. Let us surrender ourselves more deeply to the grace of conversion today.

Acts 22:3-16 (or Acts 9:1-22)
3 Paul addressed the people in these words: “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city. At the feet of Gamaliel I was educated strictly in our ancestral law and was zealous for God, just as all of you are today. 4 I persecuted this Way to death, binding both men and women and delivering them to prison. 5 Even the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify on my behalf. For from them I even received letters to the brothers and set out for Damascus to bring back to Jerusalem in chains for punishment those there as well. 6 “On that journey as I drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from the sky suddenly shone around me. 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ 8 I replied, ‘Who are you, sir?’ And he said to me, ‘I am Jesus the Nazorean whom you are persecuting.’ 9 My companions saw the light but did not hear the voice of the one who spoke to me. 10 I asked, ‘What shall I do, sir?’ The Lord answered me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told about everything appointed for you to do.’ 11 Since I could see nothing because of the brightness of that light, I was led by hand by my companions and entered Damascus. 12 “A certain Ananias, a devout observer of the law, and highly spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, 13 came to me and stood there and said, ‘Saul, my brother, regain your sight.’ And at that very moment I regained my sight and saw him. 14 Then he said, ‘The God of our ancestors designated you to know his will, to see the Righteous One, and to hear the sound of his voice; 15 for you will be his witness before all to what you have seen and heard. 16 Now, why delay? Get up and have yourself baptized and your sins washed away, calling upon his name.’”

Psalm 117:1bc, 2
R: Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.
1 Praise the LORD, all you nations; glorify him, all you peoples! (R) 2 For steadfast is his kindness toward us, and the fidelity of the LORD endures forever. (R)

G O S P E L

Paul knows his mission is to take the Gospel message of salvation wherever he can. This is our calling, too. Things have not changed that much. Yes, much of the world has heard the Gospel, centuries ago, but it seems there is still conversion needed throughout Europe and western Christianity. Let us listen to God’s Word so that we will know what our role will be in re-evangelizing much of a growing secular society. There is hope because with God we know we will prevail in the end.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
I choose you from the world, to go and bear fruit that will last, says the Lord.
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Mark 16:15-18
15 Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. 18 They will pick up serpents [with their hands], and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Exodus 25-27

SABBATH

WITNESSING AND WALKING
Today we celebrate the conversion of St. Paul. The Opening Prayer of today’s Mass offers us some gems for reflection. We pray, “Grant that we may be witnesses of Your love and that we may walk always in the way of the Gospel.”  Witnessing and walking — these are what we essentially pray for today. These are the same things that St. Paul showed to an exemplary and heroic degree.
The first reading from the Book of Acts recounts St. Paul’s transformation from persecutor to prophet. From one who denounced the followers of the Lord, he became one who preeminently announced the Good News after an intense personal religious experience.
But there was more to St. Paul than merely passing from denouncer to announcer. In today’s passage from Acts, he was told to “arise” twice: “Arise and go to Damascus.” “Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, invoking his name.”
Our recent history as a people has seen a number of denouncers and announcers. We love to call them whistleblowers. They denounce and announce the misdeeds and alleged crimes of the powers that be. Similarly, we encounter a lot of prophets and preachers. They all sound good and look good in YouTube. Sound bytes continue to flood cyberspace, filling our minds with lofty thoughts. But heroism definitely goes beyond whistleblowing, and holiness is a lot more than just talking the talk. We all need to go from witnessing to walking. We need to walk the talk. We need to “arise” and do something more than offer a few sound bytes via our Twitter accounts.
Pope Paul VI said the same thing 36 years ago. More than teachers, what the world needs are witnesses. And if young people listen to teachers and preachers, it is because they are, in the first place, witnesses who walk their talk.
St. Paul convicts us all today. From one who railed and wailed against believers, he transformed himself into a credible witness of God’s love, and more. From then on, he walked the way of the Gospel!Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

Reflection Question:
Are you simply a “denouncer?” When are you going to be an “announcer?” It’s time to walk your talk and be a living witness to the Gospel.

Lord, grant me courage to live my life according to Your will so that I may be a good witness to Your Gospel.

St. Peter Thomas, pray for us.
