“Prandering”

Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. – Mark 1:35

Dawn, with its hushed moments, is my favorite time to do what I call “prandering” praying and pondering. With drowsy eyes that refuse to open, I cuddle up to the Lord as He gently caresses my thoughts. “Prandering” is not yet my full prayer mode — the thoughts are random, oftentimes fuzzy. It’s not just pondering; the Lord guides my thoughts.
But relaxed though it may be, it’s at these “prandering” times when I get the greatest inspirations — how to handle a difficult situation, what to write, what direction to take. Like a few days before my birthday in 2009, I groggily considered my home life. I’m an only child and my parents often treat me like I was still 16 (me, with two grown children way older than that). So, the Lord inspired me to write a beautiful birthday letter of independence couched in words of love and affirmation. That definitely improved my situation.
Prandering” is like hanging out with an old friend, so relaxed, sometimes not even talking. But it’s relaxing with the Friend who can make miracles happen. Lella Santiago (mirellasantiago@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Have you been too busy lately to listen to what the Lord wants to tell you? Spend a few moments with Him today.

Lord, remind me that prayer is not only about asking for things that I want. It’s  more about asking You what You want for me.

COMPANION

1st READING

Jesus becomes like us in the Incarnation in order to redeem us. One of the Fathers of the Church once said, “That which is not assumed is not redeemed” in reference to the Incarnation. This is a truth we do well to reflect upon as it will convince us of the depth of the humility and love of God. Only someone who loves as deeply as God loves would be able to do what He has done in bringing to us the gift of salvation.

Hebrews 2:14-18
14 Now since the children share in blood and flesh, he likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. 16 Surely he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham; 17 therefore, he had to become like his brothers in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

Psalm 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8-9
R: The Lord remembers his covenant forever.
1 Give thanks to the LORD, invoke his name; make known among the nations his deeds. 2 Sing to him, sing his praise, proclaim all his wondrous deeds. (R) 3 Glory in his holy name; rejoice, O hearts that seek the LORD! 4 Look to the LORD in his strength; seek to serve him constantly. (R) 6 You descendants of Abraham, his servants, sons of Jacob, his chosen ones! 7 He, the LORD, is our God; throughout the earth his judgments prevail. (R) 8 He remembers forever his covenant which he made binding for a thousand generations — 9 which he entered into with Abraham and by his oath to Isaac. (R)

Jesus was a man committed to prayer. How committed are we to prioritizing prayer in our lives? We must pray daily. The problem often is that prayer is the first part of our lifestyle to suffer when we get busy or something goes wrong. If you think about it for a moment, you will realize that this is ridiculous. If something has gone wrong, if we are getting extra busy, the greatest need in our life is God and prayer is our access to this relationship.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord. I know them, and they follow me.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Mark 1:29-39
29 On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. 31 He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them. 32 When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. 33 The whole town was gathered at the door. 34 He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. 35 Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and those who were with him pursued him 37 and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” 38 He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” 39 So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.

SABBATH

Marked for Service

One time, I happened to catch a talk show featuring mothers who were worried about their children posting too much about themselves, even their most private activities, in the social networks on the Internet. When one daughter was asked why she did it, she plainly responded, “For me it’s just self-expression. I like it when I get people’s attention. YouTube is cool because it allows me to broadcast myself.”
Broadcast myself.
In today’s Gospel, Mark once more narrates a typical day in the public ministry of the Lord — teaching the people, meeting the sick and healing them of their infirmities, and expelling demons. But every time the crowd gets excited over the wonders He performs, He seems to shy away from the limelight. It’s not unusual to read about Jesus “withdrawing to a lonely place in the desert” after rounds of healing and miracles. Today, Simon had to track down Jesus and when he found Him said, “Everybody is looking for you!” It was the day after another instance of miraculous healings. Perhaps there was a band ready to serenade Him. The press might have been invited for a news conference. But Jesus was not interested. Instead, He said, “Let us move on to the neighboring village so that I may proclaim the good news there, too.”
No, Jesus here is not being shy. He is not playing hard to get. While Jesus often avoids the limelight, He does present Himself when needed. In fact, many times in the Gospel, Jesus even calls attention to Himself and calls Himself titles like “I am the good shepherd,” “I am the way, the truth and the life,” etc. I believe Jesus here is teaching us  something about self-promotion. Self-promotion is not bad. It is actually a Christian duty. But self-promotion is good only when placed at the service of charity and duty. Otherwise, self-promotion becomes vanity, nothing but an ego trip. Yes, Christians, broadcast yourself. Mark out yourself. But only for the sake of service and charity. Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
Deep in your heart, answer the question: Do I feel the need to broadcast myself? Do I seek self-promotion for its own sake?

“Lord, teach me to be generous… to labor and ask not for reward. Save that of knowing that I do Your most holy will. Amen.”

St. Martina, pray for us.
