YOU ARE AMAZING

“What are human beings, O God, that you should think of them; mere human beings, that you should care for them?” – Hebrews 2: 6

Before I enter our home at night, I have a habit of looking up at the evening sky, searching for stars. Everytime I see their beauty, I am reminded of how great the One who created them is.
Worship leader Chris Tomlin aptly expresses what I feel in my favorite song, “Indescribable,” as he sings: “You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name. You see the depths of my heart and you love me the same. You are amazing God!”
The same loving hands that crafted the stars made us. Yet we are more precious in God’s eyes. “You made them for a little while lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor, and made them rulers over all things” (Hebrews 2:7-8).
In today’s Gospel, the people were amazed when they heard Jesus speaking with authority. Like our Lord, we are representatives of the Almighty Father. He has given us the same grace to shine His love to a world covered in darkness, just like the stars do.
As you go home tonight, do take time to look up, and remember how truly great our God is. Know also that you are dearly loved. Marjorie Ann Duterte (marjorie.travels@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Out of love we were created, and we are wonderfully made. How great is our God!

Father, thank You for loving us so much and for giving us Jesus for our salvation. Help us to shine Your love that You may be praised. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

The wise person will realize the gratuity of God’s gift of salvation and thus seek to be faithful to it as much as possible. From a spiritual point of view, there is a little worse than the sin of presumption. Taking God for granted is one of the most arrogant things human beings can do. We rely on Him for our existence and this is the way we treat Him?

Hebrews 2:5-12
5 It was not to angels that he subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6 Instead, someone has testified somewhere: “What is man that you are mindful of him, or the son of man that you care for him? 7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor, 8 subjecting all things under his feet.” In “subjecting” all things to him, he left nothing not “subject to him.” Yet at present we do not see “all things subject to him,” 9 but we do see Jesus “crowned with glory and honor” because he suffered death, he who “for a little while” was made “lower than the angels,” that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them “brothers,” 12 saying: “I will proclaim your name to my brothers, in the midst of the assembly I will praise you.”

P S A L M

Psalm 8:2, 5, 6-7, 8-9
R: You have given your Son rule over the works of your hands.
1 [2] O LORD, our Lord, how glorious is your name over all the earth! 4 [5] What is man that you should be mindful of him, or the son of man that you should care for him? (R) 5 [6] You have made him little less than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 [7] You have given him rule over the works of your hands, putting all things under his feet. (R) 7 [8] All sheep and oxen, yes, and the beasts of the field, 8 [9] the birds of the air, the fishes of the sea, and whatever swims the paths of the seas. (R)

G O S P E L

I think we all like the idea of speaking with authority and just generally having authority in our lives. Well, the only way this will ever be true is if we live in accordance with God’s will – or any authority we have will be fake. Let us seek His will with a fervent and obedient heart so that our lives will truly give glory to God.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Receive the word of God, not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Mark 1:21-28
21 Jesus came to Capernaum with his followers, and on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. 22 The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. 23 In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; 24 he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!” 25 Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” 26 The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. 27 All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” 28 His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

my reflections
t h i n k : Let us seek His will with a fervent and obedient heart so that our lives will truly give glory to God.

SABBATH

Say in Faith

Today in the Gospel we hear a declaration of the true identity of Jesus, “I know who you are — the holy One of God!” Biblical scholars call it an indirect theophany, i.e., a manifestation of the Divinity of Jesus by another other than God Himself. It is just ironic that such declaration came from an unclean spirit that possessed a man in the synagogue. In response to such declaration, Jesus rebuked the evil spirit sharply and commanded, “Be quiet! Come out of the man!” Jesus obviously was not flattered by the declaration.
In some other parts of the Gospels, Peter also made an indirect theophany when in response to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?” he declared in behalf of the Twelve, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). Jesus commended Peter for such declaration.
Jesus said to Peter, “Blessed are you Simon…” while to the evil spirit Jesus said, “Be quiet!” Both Peter and the evil spirit made the same declaration. But the same declaration received a different response from Jesus. What accounts for the difference? The evil spirit simply made a declaration of fact. Peter made a declaration of faith. Jesus is God. But it is simply a dry fact for the devil. Even if he does not want to, the devil has no choice but to acknowledge it. The devil may have even uttered it in fear. For Peter it was different. It was a declaration borne out of love, out of a personal relationship with Jesus.
Every Sunday, we go to church and profess and declare our faith in the living God. But we are not simply there to declare a fact. God does not need to be reminded of the fact of His Divinity. He knows it from eternity. But God does long to hear a declaration of faith and love from His children. So what is it for you — fact or faith? Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
Do I cultivate a personal relationship with God in personal prayer, study and a life of righteousness? Am I mechanical in my worship at Mass or in other liturgical gatherings in church?

Lord, You have no need of our praise, but our desire to thank You is itself Your gift. Our prayer of praise adds nothing to Your greatness but makes us grow in Your grace. Amen.

St. Brandan, pray for us.
