HOW P20 GREW TO MILLIONS

Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” – Matthew 15:34

It all started with P20. In 1979, Rey Ortega was having breakfast with four friends. While he was reading the newspaper, his eyes caught an article about 200,000 out-of-school street kids in Metro Manila. The figure blew his mind. He told his four friends about it. “Look, I have an extra P20 here. We may not be able to help 200,000 street kids, but if we chip in, we can send at least one of them back to school.” So they marched to Tipas Elementary School in Taguig, Rizal.
They talked to the principal and asked if they had a student who can’t go on to high school because of poverty. The principal said yes. “Her name is Rodora Lopez.” So Rey and his friends sent her to school.
The following year, they sent another. To date, they have sent almost 100 children to school. Some even graduated cum laudes and made it to the top 10 of their board exams.
Today, Rey Ortega heads our scholarship ministry that sends poor children to high school and college.
If you think P20 has little value now, place it in God’s hands and He will multiply it for His favorite children — the anawims. Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
What little do I have that can be used for God’s purpose?

Dear Lord, I have ________ (name here any treasure, talent, time or whatever you have) in my hands. Use it for Your purpose.

COMPANION

1st READING

One of the expectations regarding the arrival of the Messiah was the defeat of death. While this will not come until the death and resurrection of Jesus, the seeds are there in His birth in the prophecies of Anna and Simeon. Isaiah looks forward to time when fear of death is removed from the lives of the people. We live in that time but still fear death. Why? Perhaps we lack the faith to truly believe in the promises of God.

Isaiah 25:6-10a
6 On this mountain the LORD of hosts will provide for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines. 7 On this mountain he will destroy the veil that veils all peoples, the web that is woven over all nations; 8 he will destroy death forever. The Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces; the reproach of his people he will remove from the whole earth; for the LORD has spoken. 9 On that day it will be said, “Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us! This is the LORD for whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!” 10 For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain.

Psalm 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6
R: I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 In verdant pastures he gives me repose; beside restful waters he leads me; 3 he refreshes my soul. (R) He guides me in right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side with your rod and your staff that give me courage. (R) 5 You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. (R) 6 Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come. (R)

G O S P E L

When God wants to do something He will see that it is done. We will be able to participate in His desires as long as we are obedient to His will. It is not a matter of having all the resources to accomplish a particular thing but that we are willing to give all that we have and trust that God will provide anything that is lacking.

Matthew 15:29-37
29 At that time: Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, went up on the mountain, and sat down there. 30 Great crowds came to him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he cured them. 31 The crowds were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the deformed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind able to see, and they glorified the God of Israel. 32 Jesus summoned his disciples and said, “My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, for they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, for fear they may collapse on the way.” 33 The disciples said to him, “Where could we ever get enough bread in this deserted place to satisfy such a crowd?” 34 Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” “Seven,” they replied, “and a few fish.” 35 He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn  them to the crowds. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. They picked up the fragments left over — seven baskets full.

think: When God wants to do something, He will see that it is done.

SABBATH

ADVENT JOY AND GLADNESS

We open this new month in this Advent season with a “bang.” In all of the variable elements of the Eucharistic Celebration designated for this day (i.e., the Opening Prayer, First Reading, Responsorial Psalm, and Gospel), we have various references to one and the same thing: the joy of the heavenly banquet offered by God.
Joy and gladness, indeed, are valuable elements in this journey that we have just begun. Liturgically speaking, the Advent season bears some resemblance to Lent. But Advent is marked by a certain eagerness (and even excitement), by a joy that what one is waiting and preparing for is sure to come.
In other words, it is not a useless waiting. Our fervent anticipation of the Messiah’s coming (adventus in Latin, hence “Advent”) colors our waiting and preparing. In the case of our Gospel episode today, probably the centurion didn’t quite expect the magnanimous gesture of Jesus’ offering to come to his house. It wasn’t an imposition on the Roman military officer, of course. Jesus shows that His healing grace is for everyone, regardless of race or ideology. Just like the heavenly banquet, in fact: “Many will come from the east and the west and will find a place at the banquet in the kingdom of God with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”
Ready or not, the Lord is coming. No such thing for Him as ideological barriers and false excuses such as unworthiness. As the centurion exemplified (and as was “endorsed” by Jesus, too), all that is needed is faith. And this faith in turn generates the joy and gladness that we have during this Advent season. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

Reflection Question:
How are you preparing for the Lord’s coming? Have you opened yourself up to His invitation? Do you take to heart the essence of Advent?

May I always live my life righteously, Lord, that I may be worthy to join Your banquet in heaven.

St. Natalia, pray for us.
