NEVER THE SAME

“By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” – Luke 21:19

One of the “Lost Boys” of Sudan, those who sought refuge from the chaos and killing and have been taught the Gospel in the churches founded by missionaries, told a congregation that he is grateful for the comforts of being resettled now in the US. But he’s extremely grateful for the faith he learned through hardship. “Americans believe in God,” he told them, “but they don’t know what God can do.”
People of deep joy and wisdom have one common thread that weaves through the fabric of their lives. They went through the crucible of testing, stood firm and gained life in a way we could only hear and read about. Persecution has taken away everything most sacred and dear to their existence. They’ve been stricken by the worst pain of all, even the hatred of their families.
And yet, God, who was seemingly blowing out all the remaining lamps of hope in their dark prison cells, did so only to throw open the shutters, to let the light of heaven in.
And their lives were never the same!Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Has God seemingly blown out the candles that light up your darkness? Rejoice! Life will never be the same.

Lord, it’s never easy believing in and standing up for You. Let me wait for You to lovingly open the shutters and let me see the light of heaven come in.

COMPANION

1st READING

God is the Holy One upon whom life depends. The images we read about here and all through the Book of Revelation are merely trying to describe something of the grandeur and majesty of God along with the idea that it is God upon whom all life depends. At the end of the world, there will be no doubt in any person’s mind of this truth. It is a wise person who lives his or her life now with an eye for the whole picture.

Revelation 15:1-4
1 I, John, saw in heaven another sign, great and awe-inspiring: seven angels with the seven last plagues, for through them God’s fury is accomplished. 2 Then I saw something like a sea of glass mingled with fire. On the sea of glass were standing those who had won the victory over the beast and its image and the number that signified its name. They were holding God’s harps, 3 and they sang the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb: “Great and wonderful are your works, Lord God almighty. Just and true are your ways, O king of the nations. 4 Who will not fear you, Lord, or glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All the nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”

P S A L M

Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 7-8, 9
R: Great and wonderful are all your works, Lord, mighty God!
1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 2 The LORD has made his salvation known in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) 7 Let the sea and what fills it resound, the world and those who dwell in it; 8 let the rivers clap their hands, the mountains shout with them for joy. (R) 9 Before the LORD, for he comes, for he comes to rule the earth; he will rule the world with justice and the peoples with equity. (R)

Persecution is probably an inevitable aspect of any Christian’s life as to live for the truth will sooner or later bring us into conflict with the world. There are many powers at work in the world seeking to destroy the dignity of human life through all sorts of medical and other immoral practices. As Christians we must defend and protect the dignity of life from conception to death. If we fail to do this, the culture of death will horrify us even more than it has done so far.

Luke 21:12-19
12 Jesus said to the crowd: “They will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name. 13 It will lead to your giving testimony. 14 Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand, 15 for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. 16 You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. 17 You will be hated by all because of my name, 18 but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. 19 By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”
Baruch 1-3

SABBATH

After the Tempest

In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus speaks about the persecution His disciples will have to endure. In the end He tells them, “You will be hated by all on account of my name, but not a hair of your head will be lost. Your endurance will win you your lives.” The martyrs had endured many sufferings and cruel deaths but their endurance had won them the joys of heaven. By dying at the hand of the evil forces they actually had won victory. Now they could not but sing songs of praise to God for His mighty deeds.
This scene was beautifully interpreted by Cambridge professor Henry Barclay Swete, an English biblical and patristic scholar. He wrote, “In the presence of God the martyrs forget themselves; their thoughts are absorbed by the new wonders that surround them; the glory of God and the mighty scheme of things in which their own sufferings form a tiny part are opening before them; they begin to see the great issue of the world-drama, and we hear the doxology with which they greet their first unclouded vision of God and his works.” John uses the same heavenly scene to encourage those who suffer for the sake of their faith in Christ not to give up but remain strong until the end.
Today, we might not have to undergo persecution as the early Christians did, but our faith was,i s and will always be challenged, one way or the other. Temptations to ignore God’s commandments and do what we think is right are dangerous threats. The “dictatorship of relativism,” as then Cardinal Ratzinger named it, spreads even in our so-called Christian country. As long as we live in this world, our faithwill always be tested.
It is good to read John’s encouraging visions. He reminds us that in the dark hours of our lives, God remains at our side. Instead of focusing on the sufferings we might endure, it would be good to focus on the mighty deeds God does in our lives. In doing so, we would not be complaining; instead, we would be joining the saints in heaven in praising God.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Do I lament and complain more than I praise God?

Lord, help me to focus more on Your mighty deeds in my life than on the sufferings I encounter. May I never forget to praise and thank You for being at my side in my darkest hours.

St. Colman of Cloyne, pray for us.
