God’s HRT

“If someone’s brother dies leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother.” – Luke 20:28

I used to be a klutz. I’d walk into furniture. I’d be all thumbs. Things improved with motherhood. I’m proud to say I didn’t drop my babies ever. But bumping into things remained as my signature move. Because of this, my husband didn’t let me drive. He said car repairs were not in our monthly budget.
When he died, one of my biggest challenges was automotive in nature. Driving for my kids when nobody else could was a religious experience. A hundred Glory Bes and Hail Marys and dashes of Our Fathers punctuated our trips. Thank God, He sends me people to take my husband’s place, especially when I get car trouble.
As I write this, our car is in the repair shop. It overheated this morning. Having remained in ignorance of what makes a car run, I poured water in the radiator with the engine off and busted something inside. God sent a mechanic who had a shop in the corner from where I stopped. God also timed the incident when my father was in town to give me directions and talk to the mechanic. This is God’s HRT (husband replacement therapy) in action. Lella Santiago (mirellasantiago@yahoo.com)

COMPANION

1st READING

A Day of Judgment is coming to the earth when Jesus returns. We need to be ready for that day, whenever it may be, so that when He comes we will be  ready with the witness of a holy and righteous life. If Jesus comes tomorrow, would you be ready to give an account of your life? I do not ask this question to scare you but to remind you of the urgency to prepare our lives for His coming.

Revelation 11:4-12
4 I, John, heard a voice from heaven speak to me. Here are my two witnesses: These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. 5 If anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouths and devours their enemies. In this way, anyone wanting to harm them is sure to be slain. 6 They have the power to close up the sky so that no rain can fall during the time of their prophesying. They also have power to turn water into blood and to afflict the earth with any plague as often as they wish. 7 When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the abyss will wage war against them and conquer them and kill them. 8 Their corpses will lie in the main street of the great city, which has the symbolic names “Sodom” and “Egypt,” where indeed their Lord was crucified. 9 Those from every people, tribe, tongue, and nation will gaze on their corpses for three and a half days, and they will not allow their corpses to be buried. 10 The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and be glad and exchange gifts because these two prophets tormented the inhabitants of the earth. 11 But after the three and a half days, a breath of life from God entered them. When they stood on their feet, great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven say to them, “Come up here.” So they went up to heaven in a cloud as their enemies looked on.

Psalm 144:1b, 2, 9-10
R: Blessed be the Lord, my Rock!
1 Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war. (R) 2 My mercy and my fortress, my stronghold, my deliverer, my shield, in whom I trust, who subdues peoples under me. (R) 9 O God, I will sing a new song to you; with a ten-stringed lyre I will chant your praise, 10 you who give victory to kings, and deliver David, your servant, from the evil sword. (R)

G O S P E L

There is no point trying to trip up God with silly questions that border upon the stupid. What is the point of this question? If there is no resurrection, what is the point of anything in life? What is there to live for if there is nothing beyond this life? If there is no resurrection we might as well give ourselves over to whatever we feel like doing as there will not be any final judgment. Pragmatism will reign supreme: if you can do it and get away with it, good for you.

Luke 20:27-40
27 Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, came forward and put this question to Jesus, 28 saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us, ‘If someone’s brother dies leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother.’ 29 Now there were seven brothers; the first married a woman but died childless. 30 Then the second 31 and the third married her, and likewise all the seven died childless. 32 Finally the woman also died. 33 Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be? For all seven had been married to her.” 34 Jesus said to them, “The children of this age marry and remarry; 35 but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. 36 They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise. 37 That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called ‘Lord’ the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; 38 and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” 39 Some of the scribes said in reply, “Teacher, you have answered well.” 40 And they no longer dared to ask him anything.
Jeremiah 43-46

SABBATH

It’s getting weirder and weirder…

If yesterday’s reading from the Book of Revelation was strange and odd, today’s passage is utterly confusing. Reading such bizarre scenes, we cannot help but ask: Why does John write such weird scenes?
The whole book has one main topic: the struggle between good and evil, between God and Satan. All humankind is involved in this struggle: the followers of Christ are attacked and persecuted by the followers of Satan, the pagans. For John this meant concretely that the Church is attacked by the satanic power of the Roman Empire, symbolized by the beast. He dreams of the destruction of Rome and assures his Christian readers of the grand victory of God and of all those who remain faithful in spite of persecution.
The two witnesses we meet in today’s passage seem to be Moses and Elijah. According to a Jewish belief based on the Book of Malachi, God would send a special messenger before the end of the world. Now, not one but two messengers have come. Remember Moses and Elijah appearing together during Christ’s transfiguration! Even though God’s messengers would be killed, they would come back to life. Whatever Satan’s followers would do, they cannot and will not defeat those who follow God. As Jesus rose on the third day, so all His friends will eventually rise and join the Lord and the angels in heaven.
The struggle between good and evil continues. “Prophets” of atheism use their writing skills, the Internet, TV and advertisements on buses in London to undermine the faith of Christ’s followers. Rampant materialism, liberalism, hedonism and relativism threaten our faith more than the Roman emperors were able to do. Values and absolutes are little by little undermined and even destroyed. People have asked me, “What is happening? Is the devil defeating the Church?”
Today’s passage from the Book of Revelation gives us an encouraging answer: Don’t worry. The devil may do a lot of harm and even seem to win temporarily, but God will have the last word. To Him belongs the final victory.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Am I easily discouraged when I see evil around me? Am I tempted to give in to the many trends that oppose Christian values?

Lord, often I am frightened when I see or hear how evil spreads and contaminates what is good. Even in my heart I feel the power of evil trying to alienate me from You. I ask You today for strength to remain faithful to You.

St. Edmund Rich, pray for us.
