THINK GREEN

He taught them a lesson. “Consider the fig tree and allthe other trees. ”– Luke 21:29

God has ingenious ways of conveying His message to us. God uses nature to remind us of how much He loves us. He created trees to tell us that a season is about to end and a new one is coming.
The trees are indicating another important message from God today. Our forests are disappearing. I watch National Geographic channel every now and then and it is tragic to see that we are experiencing stronger storms because there are fewer trees to help regulate the climate and remove harmful elements in the air.
But if we heed the signs and learn our lesson, we can still ensure that the coming generations can receive God’s messages through nature. The future generations will still have trees to marvel and write poems about.
Support environment friendly initiatives in your own simple way and fulfill God’s call to be stewards of His creation. Mae Ignacio (maemi04@aim.com)

REFLECTION:
In my own small way, is there something that I can do to help take care of God’s creation?

Dear Father, help me become a better steward of Your creation.

COMPANION

1st READING

The choices we make every day are the present day battleground of good and evil. So much in the world depends upon how we choose to live our lives. This is why the recent popes have constantly called upon the faithful, indeed all humanity, to choose the way of life and not the way of death.

Revelation 20:1-4, 11-21:2
1 I, John, saw an angel come down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the abyss and a heavy chain. 2 He seized the dragon, the ancient serpent, which is the Devil or Satan, and tied it up for a thousand years 3 and threw it into the abyss, which he locked over it and sealed, so that it could no longer lead the nations astray until the thousand years are completed. After this, it is to be released for a short time. 4 Then I saw thrones; those who sat on them were entrusted with judgment. I also saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, and who had not worshipped the beast or its image nor had accepted its mark on their foreheads or hands. They came to life and they reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 11 Next I saw a large white throne and the one who was sitting on it. The earth and the sky fled from his presence and there was no place for them. 12 I saw the dead, the great and the lowly, standing before the throne, and scrolls were opened. Then another scroll was opened, the book of life. The dead were judged according to their deeds, by what was written in the scrolls. 13 The sea gave up its dead; then Death and Hades gave up their dead. All the dead were judged according to their deeds. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the pool of fire. (This pool of fire is the second death.) 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the pool of fire. 21: 1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Psalm 84:3, 4, 5-6a, 8a
R: Here God lives among his people.
2 [3] My soul yearns and pines for the courts of the LORD. My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. (R) 3 [4] Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest in which she puts her young — your altars, O LORD of hosts, my king and my God! (R) 4 [5] Blessed they who dwell in your house! continually they praise you. 5 [6] Blessed the men whose strength you are! 7 [8] They go from strength to strength. (R)

Jesus affirms that we need to discern between the issues in our lives that matter and those that do not. We spend an awful amount of time on things that are irrelevant in relation to eternal life. What does it matter if my hair is grey or black or any other color when I die? What matters is that I have lived for Jesus and given all that I can to build His Kingdom.

Luke 21:29-33
29 Jesus told his disciples a parable. “Consider the fig tree and all the other trees. 30 When their buds burst open, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near; 31 in the same way, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”
Ezekiel 1-4
my reflections
think: We need to discern between the issues in our lives that matter and those that do not in relation to eternal life.

SABBATH

Again, When will the World End?

These past days, the Church has led us towards the end of the liturgical year tomorrow, through the Gospel passages and readings that speak about the end of the world and the Second Coming of Christ. Today, John’s vision again presents to us a grand picture of God’s triumph over evil. Shortly before the year 1000, there was unrest in the Western world. European economy nearly collapsed because many people had stopped working and had gone to the mountains to wait for the Second Coming of the Lord. And shortly before the year 2000, a wave of end-of-the-world-prophecies frightened humanity. Pope John Paul II countered this by declaring the year 2000 as a special Jubilee Year.
The fear towards the end of a millennium goes back to the Book of Revelation. As we read today, John speaks clearly about a thousand year period towards the end of the world, during which time Satan will be chained.
Our problem is that we take numbers literally, but the Book of Revelation was developed from ancient Jewish literature which uses numbers symbolically. Jewish apocalyptic writers are fond of playing with numbers and letting the reader guess what the numbers stand for.
The Bible is not a book meant to frighten us. The Bible is Good News. Through human authors, God speaks words of guidance and hope to help us find our way through the jungle of life. God’s Word wants us to focus on our day-to-day affairs and make the best out of every moment given to us by God. Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us today our daily bread…” We don’t pray for tomorrow’s bread. Tomorrow will take care of itself. Too often we plan too much for the future and get caught up with its accompanying anxieties, forgetting that today has enough challenges and problems for us to solve. Christianity is not a futuristic religion that makes us gaze into an uncertain future. It is a realistic religion that helps us to do what is right today. And doing the right thing today and every succeeding day will prepare us for the grand moment when we will finally see Christ face to face. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Does the future cause me anxieties? Could it be that I don’t trust the Lord enough?

Lord, thank You for taking away my fear of the future, for redirecting my thoughts and actions to the here and now. Help me to please You day after day and let the future take care of itself.

St. Conrad, pray for us.
