STILL STANDING

“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock.” – Matthew 7: 24-25

“I’m afraid He won’t live past one year,” doctors said. He was their firstborn son and the first grandson as well. He was aptly named Uno. At age six, they found a malignant tumor in his skull. Doctor said he could go anytime soon, even the next day. But his family had great faith. They stood on God’s Word that He was the Divine Healer.
They sought out other opinions abroad and found doctors who were willing to operate on him. While they were waiting for the results, Uno told his parents that God spoke to him through a verse in the Bible: “Be not afraid.”
He survived. He’s now 17 years old. Vibrant, brilliant and gifted.
Growing up, he topped his class. He memorized Bible verses. He spoke about his healing to many people.
Their family underwent many, many more trials after that. But because they kept their faith, they survived each one. God had gotten them through the worst so far, and they knew He would do it again — come what may.
Experiencing strong winds? Stand firm on His word.George Tolentino Gabriel (george.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
What has God delivered me from in the past? Do I believe He’ll do it again?

Lord, help me to trust in Your solid promises.

COMPANION

1st READING

Isaiah constantly builds up his understanding of the City of God making it stronger and more glorious with every additional line and description. It is up to each one of us to seek a deeper understanding of how such visions affect our lives and faith. I dare say that the more we meditate upon them, the more they will speak to us. What better reason could there be to read and seek to understand the Scriptures?

Isaiah 26:1-6
1 On that day they will sing this song in the land of Judah, “A strong city have we; he sets up walls and ramparts to protect us. 2 Open up the gates to let in a nation that is just, one that keeps faith. 3 A nation of firm purpose you keep in peace; in peace, for its trust in you.” 4 Trust in the LORD forever! For the LORD is an eternal Rock. 5 He humbles those in high places, and the lofty city he brings down; he tumbles it to the ground, levels it with the dust. 6 It is trampled underfoot by the needy, by the footsteps of the poor.

P S A L M

Psalm 118:1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27a
R: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. 8 It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. 9 It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes. (R) 19 Open to me the gates of justice; I will enter them and give thanks to the LORD. 20 This gate is the LORD’s; the just shall enter it. 21 I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me and have been my savior. (R) 25 O LORD, grant salvation! O LORD, grant prosperity! 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD; we bless you from the house of the LORD. 27 The LORD is God, and he has given us light. (R)

Obedience to God is the fundamental foundation necessary for a successful and blessed Christian life. We will still experience suffering, but will never be far from His presence if we are always intent on accomplishing His will.

Matthew 7:21, 24-27
21 Jesus said to his disciples: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. 24 “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. 26 And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. 27 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.”

my reflections
think: Obedience to God is the fundamental foundation necessary for a successful and blessed Christian life.

SABBATH

LIVES CENTERED AND FOUNDED ON THE LORD

One characteristic of our liturgies during this Advent season is the intentional connection between the First Reading and the Gospel, as far as their themes are concerned. This surely makes for a coherent and meaningful taking root of God’s Word in us.
But aside from this characteristic thematic link between our readings, we also have the prophet Isaiah as our Advent guide. Just as he describes God as the Rock in our First Reading today, it is clear that he himself was a prophet who was solidly founded on rock (using the metaphor of our Gospel passage). According to the comment given in The Vatican II Weekday Missal,Isaiah is considered the greatest Old Testament prophet by us Christians because so many of his writings were fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
It makes us think not so much how our writings (if we have any in the first place) are actualized or fulfilled at all. Rather, the deeper question is how or whether our lives are centered on our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our Responsorial Psalm points out the futility of foundations and motivations other than God. Instead, “it is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man . . . than to trust in princes.” Truly, “a strong city have we” in the Lord God; “he sets up walls and ramparts to protect us.” And if it is peace that we long for in today’s often violent and war-torn world, let us be clear and convinced that we want peace indeed as our “firm purpose.” For if it is so, then God Himself will be the one to reward us with peace. “A nation of firm purpose you keep in peace; in peace, for its trust in you.”Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

Reflection Question:
Who is the center of your life? When all else fails, who do you turn to? Do you put your trust and hope in man or in God?

Teach me to put my trust in You, O God, for You are the true strength that keeps me going.

St. Pontian, pray for us.
