LET’S GET REAL

“There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human beings.” – Luke 18:2

Let’s get real today (because that’s what authentic prayer really is). How could Jesus compare God to an unjust judge? Well, Jesus has a knack for knowing exactly how we think. Sometimes our thoughts about God are so dark, and our fears about him run so deep, that we hardly dare to say what we’re thinking. But Jesus says it for us.
Go ahead, admit it: sometimes the Lord seems like an unjust judge. He doesn’t seem fair. He doesn’t seem to care. We pray for Him to help us but He doesn’t do what we ask. Jesus knows how discouraging that can be. He knows there are times when we feel like just giving up on God and not praying to Him anymore. But Jesus still tells us to never give up praying. Why? I may not know what’s on God’s mind but I definitely know who He is.
He is The Judge. Not the rotten kind who delivers anyway. He’s the kind who is ultimately good and always able. This is more than enough assurance to continue believing. Let’s pray today. Again. Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Have you been honest with God on how you feel about His silence over your prayers? You can pour your heart out to Him today.

Father, I’m tired praying. Embrace me today.

COMPANION

1st READING

Some people are simply called to be supporters of the work of the Church. Not all are preachers; not all are evangelists or miracle workers. What is important for each of us is to be faithful to what we are called to be. There is no point in aspiring to something we will never be; we will just waste our time in daydreams and worthless reveries.

3 John 5-8
5 Beloved, you are faithful in all you do for the brothers and sisters, especially for strangers; 6 they have testified to your love before the church. Please help them in a way worthy of God to continue their journey. 7 For they have set out for the sake of the Name and are accepting nothing from the pagans. 8 Therefore, we ought to support such persons, so that we may be co-workers in the truth.

Psalm 112:1-2, 3-4, 5-6
R: Blessed the man who fears the Lord.
1 Blessed the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commands. 2 His posterity shall be mighty upon the earth; the upright generation shall be blessed. (R) 3 Wealth and riches shall be in his house; his generosity shall endure forever. 4 Light shines through the darkness for the upright; he is gracious and merciful and just. (R) 5 Well for the man who is gracious and lends, who conducts his affairs with justice; 6 he shall never be moved; the just man shall be in everlasting remembrance. (R)

Perseverance in prayer assures God that you really desire that which you are asking for. It is important that we do not act like spoiled children when we place our needs before God. I would think He’d have little time for such arrogance and petty behavior. Let us have the firmness and confidence of conviction that what we ask for is good for us and will indeed be provided by God in one way or another.

Luke 18:1-8
1 Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said, 2 “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being. 3 And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’ 4 For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, 5 because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.’ ” 6 The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. 7 Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? 8 I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

my reflections
t h i n k : It is important for each of us to be faithful to what we are callled to be.

SABBATH

Our “Instant” Age and Prayer

While writing the November 12 reflection, a chat message from the Shepherd’s Voice Publications flashes on my monitor asking whether I got their message to write these reflections. My instant answer is yes. Could I already send what I have finished for the layout? Two minutes later my reflections for November 1 to 11 are already with the Sabbath publisher. We can only marvel at the modern means of communication which make many things much easier.
The problem is when we expect instant results in all areas of life. Friendship still takes time to develop. Happiness in marriage is the fruit of years and years of struggle and perseverance. Deepening of faith and holiness remains a life-long exercise. Living in a time of so many instant things, we can easily become impatient and even give up in our struggle for the really valuable things in life. Prayer often demands a lot of patience; it is an exercise in trust and hope against all hope. God is not a vending machine — it doesn’t work like this: put in a few prayers and God’s answer comes out.
In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus tells a funny parable about a corrupt judge who finally gave in to the pleas of a poor widow because of her persistence. Is God like that judge? Does He grant our request only when He cannot stand our begging anymore?
Of course, God isn’t like that. He does not have to be moved by our tears, promises or even threats. God loves us and answers our prayers — but in His time. Sometimes He does not give in to our pleas for what we think is good for us might not be good in the eyes of God who sees further than we do. We expect an instant positive answer to our prayers, forgetting that “no” is also an answer. It might cause us pain when God refuses us, but we have to learn that in such a case His answer is for our best. We have to learn from Jesus to be persistent, yes, but we also have to learn that short and difficult prayer, “Not my will be done but yours!”Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Do I give up easily when God seemingly does not respond to my prayers immediately?

Lord, teach me to be persistent in my prayers but also submit to Your divine will and admit that You know better than I do what is good for me.

St. Didacus, pray for us.
