EVANGELISTS

For many will come in my name, saying, “I am He.” – Luke 21:8

Turn on your cable TV and you will find a lot of evangelists preaching the Word of God. Go to one channel and you will see one preacher attacking another from a different denomination. Turn to other channels and you will basically find the same thing. They proclaim the Word of God yet they don’t stop attacking the faith of other denominations. They each profess that theirs is the way to God.
Sometimes, you will get confused and ask yourself, “Whom should I believe?” The above passage will give us a guide on how to discern. The Bible says that many will come in Jesus’ name so we should be more discerning. Take a look at how these professed evangelists live their lives and, from there, you will know whom to believe.
But this leads me to a deeper question: How do I live my life? Am I inspiring people around me or am I leading them to sin? I am an evangelist just like you. All of us are called to evangelize and spread the Good News. Will they believe us?Hermie Morelos (hrm9224@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Live your life in a way that people will see Jesus in you.

Jesus, let me do my part in evangelizing others.

1st READING

The message of today’s reading is very simple: there is going to be a time of judgment and we had better prepare for it. Should we be fearful of such a day?  Well, that all depends on whether or not we have something to fear, such as unrepented sin. If you regularly repent of your sin and sincerely seek to live a  oly life, then I doubt you have much, if anything, of which to be afraid.

Revelation 14:14-19
14 I, John, looked and there was a white cloud, and sitting on the cloud one who looked like a son of man, with a gold crown on his head and a harp sickle in his hand. 15 Another angel came out of the temple, crying out in a loud voice to the one sitting on the cloud, “Use your sickle and reap the harvest, for the time to reap has come, because the earth’s harvest is fully ripe.” 16 So the one who was sitting on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested. 17 Then another angel came out of the temple in heaven who also had a sharp sickle. 18 Then another angel came  m the altar, who was in charge of the fire, and cried out in a loud voice to the one who had the sharp sickle, “Use your sharp sickle and cut the usters from the earth’s vines, for its grapes are ripe.” 19 So the angel swung his sickle over the earth and cut the earth’s vintage. He threw it into the great wine press of God’s fury.

Psalm 96:10, 11-12, 13
R: The Lord comes to judge the earth.
10 Say among the nations the LORD is king. He has made the world firm, not to be moved; he governs the peoples with equity. (R) 11 Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; let the sea and what fills it resound; 12 let the plains be joyful and all that is in them! Then shall all the trees of the forest exult. (R) 13 Before the LORD, for he comes; for he comes to rule the earth. He shall rule the world with justice and the peoples with his constancy. (R)

G O S P E L

We live in the end times. However, the Church understands that the end times began with the death of Jesus. As disciples, it’s not about the signs or when the end of the world will occur. We need to be ready now. This is the only way we will have prepared properly for the return of Jesus. And if He comes tomorrow or in a thousand years, it does not matter to us because we are ready whenever He comes.

Luke 21:5-11
5 While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, Jesus said, 6 “All that you see       — the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.” 7 Then they asked him, “Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?” 8 He answered, “See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and ‘The time has come.’ Do not follow them! 9 When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end.” 10 Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs  ill come from the sky.”

SABBATH

One or Two Judgments?

Jesus paints a great scene of the Last Judgment. The King appears in the clouds and all humankind assembles before Him to be divided — the sheep separated from the goats.
In today’s passage from the Book of Revelation, John on Patmos also describes the final judgment. He uses images from Old Testament writings such as the image of “one like a son of man” appearing on a cloud. What will really happen during God’s judgment?
Unfortunately, the Bible is not very clear about it. The sacred writers use metaphors and images common to their culture. Some authors, like John of Patmos and St. Paul, speak only about a final judgment at the end of time. Luke, however, seems to know only about a judgment at the moment of death.
Our catechism speaks about two judgments: the particular judgment linked with the moment of death, and the universal judgment handed down at the end of history. Are we then judged twice? If we are admitted to heaven in the individual judgment, could this verdict be reversed during the Last Judgment? Surely not.
The Church explains that in the particular judgment we will be judged for what we have done or failed to do. In the universal judgment we will realize how our good deeds or our failings have affected the course of history. The Catechism of the Catholic Church affirms that: “The Last Judgment will reveal even to its furthest consequences the good each person has done or failed to do during his earthly life” (CCC 1039).
One fact is very clear: the moment will come when we will have to render an account of all we have done in our lives, our good deeds and our misdeeds. And the time will come when we will be made to realize the consequence of our acts on the lives of others — for better or for worse. When we think of our judgment day, therefore, let us not focus solely on the distant future, but also take heed of the here and now and make the best out of every moment and opportunity the Lord gives us.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Am I scared of the Last Judgment? Why? Is it because I don’t live a life that merits God’s approval?

Lord, the thought of our judgment tends to frighten me. But now I realize it is like an examination: the more I have prepared, the less I have to fear. And   also believe that You are a merciful judge. Help me prepare well for that moment.

St. Columban, pray for us.
