BEYOND WORDS

“…because the hearts of the holy ones have been refreshed.” – Philemon 7

The experience is truly amazing and is beyond words. My husband, Raul, and I are grateful to God for the privilege of serving Him as worship leaders of the Bukas Loob sa Diyos Catholic Covenant Community at the Santuario de San Antonio church in Makati.
As the date draws closer, the excitement builds up for the precious moment of encounter. But along with the mounting enthusiasm and eagerness, comes the tension and the anxiety once we begin our preparation.
“Whoever worships Him must worship in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). This is the difficult part — being living witnesses of God’s grace. We cannot give what we don’t have, “for from the fullness of the heart, the mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45).
We have found out over time that the more difficult it takes to prepare, the more powerful the worship becomes. And at the final hour, as we stand in front of the assembly of worshipers, the coldness inside that church melts and the power of the Holy Spirit takes over.
How humbling it is to be an instrument of the Lord in refreshing the hearts of many. Mari Q. Sison-Garcia (mari_sison_garcia@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
When the Spirit calls, be ready to embrace His mighty power.

Lord, grant me a fresh anointing today and touch the hearts of others through me.

COMPANION

1st READING

It is comforting to know that our faithfulness to the Gospel is a source of comfort and refreshment to other Christians. It is really good to know that the struggles we go through are doing good somewhere. This is the nature of being a part of the Body of Christ. Our toil and suffering may be the source of spiritual benefit to people we do not know. This is a rather amazing reality to contemplate. It can be very strengthening.

Philemon 7-20
7 Beloved: I have experienced much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the holy ones have been refreshed by you, brother. 8 Therefore, although I have the full right in Christ to order you to do what is proper, 9 I rather urge you out of love, being as I am, Paul, an old man, and now also a prisoner for Christ Jesus. 10 I urge you on behalf of my child Onesimus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment, 11 who was once useless to you but is now useful to [both] you and me. 12 I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. 13 I should have liked to retain him for myself, so that he might serve me on your behalf in my imprisonment for the gospel, 14 but I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that the good you do might not be forced but voluntary. 15 Perhaps this is why he was away from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, 16 no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a brother, beloved especially to me, but even more so to you, as a man and in the Lord. 17 So if you regard me as a partner, welcome him as you would me. 18 And if he has done you any injustice or owes you anything, charge it to me. 19 I, Paul, write this in my own hand: I will pay. May I not tell you that you owe me your very self. 20 Yes, brother, may I profit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.

Psalm 146:7, 8-9a, 9bc-10
R: Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob.
7 The Lord secures justice for the oppressed, gives good to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. (R) 8 The LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those that were bowed down; the LORD loves the just. 9 The LORD protects strangers. (R) The fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. 10 The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia. (R)

Some say that St. Martin of Tours is responsible for bringing the monastic life and tradition to Europe from North Africa. I do not believe we give the monastic life its proper due in the life of the Church — we tend to take for granted the way they serve the Church. Let us remember and reflect upon their selflessness and the way their lives are spent in intercession for us. I hate to think where we would all be without their intercession over the last 2,000 years. Let us pray today for the religious who give their lives in this service of the Church.

Luke 17:20-25
20 Asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus said in reply, “The coming of the kingdom of God cannot be observed, 21 and no one will announce, ‘Look, here it is,’ or, ‘There it is.’ For behold, the kingdom of God is among you.” 22 Then he said to his disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. 23 There will be those who will say to you, ‘Look, there he is,’ or ‘Look, here he is.’ Do not go off, do not run in pursuit. 24 For just as lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day. 25 But first he must suffer greatly and be rejected by this generation.”

Equality in Christ

Today is the only day in the whole year that a passage from St. Paul’s letter to Philemon is read. Let us have a brief look at those 25 verses. It is Paul’s shortest letter and not addressed to a community but to an individual. Philemon was the leader of a Christian community. His slave Onesimus had escaped and gone to Paul whom he helped a lot while the latter was in prison. Onesimus was subsequently converted and baptized by Paul.
Although Roman law required that runaway slaves be returned to their masters, it is puzzling that Paul should send the now-baptized Onesimus back to Philemon. It was a risky move because Philemon could kill Onesimus, brand him with a hot iron on his forehead with a big “F” (for fugitivus) or sell him in the slave market to another owner. Slavery at that time was part of society, and abolishing it would have meant a collapse of the Roman Empire. Paul, it appears, did not advocate the abolition of slavery but he urged owners of slaves to treat them well, especially those who had become Christians.
If you read Paul’s letter slowly, you will realize that Paul insinuates to Philemon to accept back Onesimus, not anymore as a slave but as a brother. “Welcome him as you would welcome me,” he writes and even asks Philemon to prepare a room for him when he comes to visit. How could Philemon refuse such a request? What the apostle stresses very strongly is that in Christ, all baptized faithful are equal and should be treated as brothers and sisters. Social status and position in society should play no role among baptized Christians. Unfortunately, we call each other brothers and sisters in Christ but often do not treat each other as such. While I know many good Christians who practice this teaching, I also know several regular church goers who, unfortunately, do not treat their household helpers or employees as sisters or brothers in Christ.
How our society would change for the better if Paul’s teaching of equality in Christ would spread, penetrate the minds and lives of all Christians and be practiced by all!Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
How do I treat people around me, especially those who are marginalized in our society?

Lord, St. Paul’s teaching is beautiful and based on Your example. You treat saint and sinner alike. Help me to learn from You and put Paul’s teaching into practice.

St. Aba Mina, pray for us.
