HER WORD, HER BOND

These words are trustworthy and true… – Revelation 22:6

She was praying for a job. The Lord granted her two options.
After much discernment and waiting, she went with the first offer, the one that replied sooner. She knew the other school would’ve probably given her a higher salary, but she was at peace with this decision. So she signed up with them.
One week later, the other school called her, offering twice the salary she would be getting from the one she had just signed up with. She didn’t expect it to be that big a difference!
She could’ve backed out. It had only been a week and the start of the school year was still far off. No damage would have been done. Except she would’ve gone back on the agreement. Besides, they needed the money. She was starting a family. Others may have encouraged her to take the larger offer.
But she decided to keep her word. She knew it was more important than anything else. Now, she’s happier than ever. Blessed beyond comprehension.
God is faithful to His Word. When we are, too, we open ourselves to His unlimited blessings.George Tolentino Gabriel (george.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
How much value do I put on keeping my word?

Lord, help me to be reliable as You are.

SABBATH

Year-end

Our liturgical year ends today. The Church celebrates the New Year tomorrow. Every December 31, we tend to reflect on the events of the past year. I suggest that we do the same at the end of this liturgical year and ask: What has this year with the Lord done for us?
Surely there were ups and downs, instances when we felt that God was distant and we were left alone in our struggle. On the other hand, surely there were moments when we felt the Lord very close to us. We will experience all these again in the coming liturgical year. Liturgy helps us cope with these experiences, especially the negative ones, because through readings and liturgical actions we remember and celebrate the mystery of Christ’s birth, life, death and resurrection. When we look at the Lord’s experiences here on earth, we discover that we can identify with Him in our brightest and darkest moments. He became one of us “in all things but sin.” He experienced joys and success, but also had to go through loneliness, misunderstanding, ridicule and rejection.
Several times this month, we reflected on the end of life. When fear of death grips us, a look at Jesus and the liturgical celebration of the Holy Week and Easter can and will encourage us to see death in a different light. Our Lord, too, could not escape death but rode it courageously through its dark gate into the glory and joy of heaven. This gives us hope to move on until we reach that dark door and the splendour beyond.
We thank the Lord today for the graces and blessings He has bestowed on us this year, especially through our faithful attendance of the liturgical celebrations. The highlight and climax of these celebrations is that moment when the Lord unites Himself with us in the Eucharist. There He assures us of His constant presence and His promise that we will never be alone in our journey through life.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Is the liturgy just a ritual or an obligation for me? Or do I consider it as a life-giving encounter with the Lord?

At the end of another liturgical year, I thank You, Lord, for the many blessings and graces I have received from You. I thank You for all that You went through here on earth to comfort me with the knowledge that You know what I am going through. Continue to be with me always.

Blessed Michael Takeshita, pray for us.
