DON’T BE A BLAMER

“Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?” – Luke 12:57

I can be indecisive at times. One time, when I had an important decision, I kept asking others what to do even when I was leaning toward one answer already. So when they would give me an answer I didn’t like, I would contradict them with my many rationalizations.
“George, why do you still ask me if you already know what you want to do?”
I realized I was trying to get someone else to share the responsibility for my decision. I knew what I wanted to do but wasn’t sure if it was the right thing. I guess I wanted someone to tell me it was OK — perhaps to share the blame? What I do know is this: God has given us the freedom to choose what is right and what is wrong. Yes, it’s important to seek counsel, but in the end, when we are alone with ourselves, we can’t fool anyone — least of all, God. We know and He knows when we go against our own conscience.
A wise friend once told me that the greatest sin is going against your own conscience. I’ve been guilty of that and it’s an awful, awful feeling.
But doing what you know is right — now that’s the best feeling in the world.George Tolentino Gabriel (george.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
What decisions are you struggling with right now? Follow your conscience.

Lord, make me pure in heart.

COMPANION

1st READING

One, one, one … our author knows that unity is a key to understanding the nature and work of God. The trouble is that we human beings are very good at splintering things and dividing them up. When it comes to our lives of faith we will have to overcome this tendency and learn to work together for the good of all. We need each other’s help if we are going to be faithful to the call God has given us as individuals and as a community of faith.

Ephesians 4:1-6
1 Brothers and sisters: I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, 3 striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: 4 one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

P S A L M

Psalm 24:1-2, 3-4ab, 5-6
R: Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.
1 The LORD’s are the earth and its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it. 2 For he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. (R) 3 Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD? Or who may stand in his holy place? 4 He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean, who desires not what is vain. (R) 5 He shall receive a blessing from the LORD, a reward from God his savior. 6 Such is the race that seeks for him, that seeks the face of the God of Jacob. (R)

G O S P E L

Signs of worldly events are easy to discern; what we have to learn to discern are the signs of the work of the Spirit in our lives so that we can respond to it. This is what will lead us to true fulfillment. I might be able to read the stock market and so earn millions of dollars; but can I read the signs of what the Spirit of God is saying to me and wanting to do in my life? Money will not buy me a ticket to heaven; obedience to the grace of the Spirit is essential to receiving the gift of eternal life.

Luke 12:54-59
54 Jesus said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain — and so it does; 55 and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is going to be hot — and so it is. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time? 57 “Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? 58 If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison. 59 I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”

my reflections
t h i n k : Obedience to the grace of the Spirit is essential to receiving the gift of eternal life.

SABBATH

Hard Life Made Easier

It should not happen, but it does. It should have been avoided but it was not. We have a lot to help us cope with the challenges of life, but we choose to ignore them. So, “history repeats itself,” as the saying goes. This was the concern of Jesus in the Gospel today. He was speaking before people who were very much experienced in foretelling the weather even without the modern tools that we have now. They knew how to read signs. Their lives depended on it. But they failed to apply it in other aspects of their lives. Jesus appeared to them and gave them many signs but they ignored them. Jesus called them hypocrites as a result. For how could they read weather signs and fail to read the clear and concrete signs like His miracles, prophesies and the teachings? These signs were bursting with truths and critical messages for them.
This prompted Jesus to ask them why they were stubborn about doing what is right. Why settle disputes in court when they could agree on a solution? This happens even today. Jesus had reasons to react because in the first place, God created an orderly universe. The world was meant to be peaceful. But we humans seem to prefer conflicts. St. Paul pointed this out to the early Christians when, because of their selfishness, they destroyed one another, and in the process, destroyed the community.
Everybody wants peace yet the efforts being made to attain it are not enough. It seems that people lack the sincerity to achieve peace. Also, it is possible that the sacrifice it requires is not enough. The Lord admonishes us to avoid unwanted consequences. He prefers that we brace ourselves for the meaningful challenges. What we can settle, let us settle peacefully. What we can do, let us do them now. Let us make use of our God-given talents for this purpose. Let us make use of every opportunity to attain peace. Let us do what we can for we may never pass this way again. Life is short. Let us not spend our lives on unnecessary sufferings. That would be hypocritical of us. And as the oldies like me would say, “I am too old for this!”Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
What have you done about making life easier without compromising the essence of things? Do you contribute to the difficulties of others? Or do you help others become closer to God?

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.

St. Mary Salome, pray for us.
