BECAUSE I BELIEVED

Consequently, those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham who had faith. – Galatians 3:9

When I was a “baby Christian” — having just accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior — I was super-duper high on the Spirit. My faith must’ve registered off the charts! O          ne time, my baby cousin was sick. Copying my spiritual mentors, I instinctively prayed over him, laying my hands on his tiny body. His fever instantly dropped.
Another time, I was rushing to an appointment and was in desperate need of a cab. I lifted up a prayer, and an empty taxi came around the corner a few seconds later.
And on another occasion, just when I needed it, the exact amount of money fell into my lap like manna from heaven.
These are my faith experiences. Would they have happened anyway without me lifting up a prayer? Who knows? With God’s goodness, I don’t doubt it.
Nevertheless, I choose to see them as fruits of faith. And yes, I am blessed. George Tolentino Gabriel (george.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Has God ever let you down? The more we ponder on it, the stronger our faith becomes.

Lord, I believe in You.

COMPANION

1st READING

Paul wants to contrast two understandings: one based on obedience to the law that he sees as based in what we can achieve on our own strength and the second based on faith and the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It is the second way that he advocates as the correct way to understand the life of a Christian. We cannot save ourselves; it is only by faith in Christ and then living our lives under the power and grace of the Holy Spirit that we will be saved.

Galatians 3:7-14
7 Brothers and sisters: Realize then that it is those who have faith who are children of Abraham. 8 Scripture, which saw in advance that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, foretold the good news to Abraham, saying, “Through you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 Consequently, those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham who had faith. 10 For all who depend on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not persevere in doing all the things written in the book of the law.” 11 And that no one is justified before God by the law is clear, for “the one who is righteous by faith will live.” 12 But the law does not depend on faith; rather, “the one who does these things will live by them.” 13 Christ ransomed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who hangs on a tree,” 14 that the blessing of Abraham might be extended to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

P S A L M

Psalm 111:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6
R: The Lord will remember his covenant for ever.
1 I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart in the company and assembly of the just. 2 Great are the works of the LORD, exquisite in all their delights. (R) 3 Majesty and glory are his work, and his justice endures forever. 4 He has won renown for his wondrous deeds; gracious and merciful is the LORD. (R) 5 He has given food to those who fear him; he will forever be mindful of his covenant. 6 He has made known to his people the power of his works, giving them
the inheritance of the nations. (R)

We ought to be careful when we are dealing with evil spirits because they are not like the family pet gone out of control — they are much worse. We do not allow children to play with fire because they might hurt themselves. When it comes to evil spirits we should exercise the same care and concern and call in the experts. Call your local priest and ask him what is the next thing to do. If it is bad enough he will have to call in the diocesan exorcist. When things are this serious, only the exorcist or the bishop should attempt to handle the case.

Luke 11:15-26
15 When Jesus had driven out a demon, some of the crowd said: “By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.” 16 Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. 17 But he knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. 18 And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons. 19 If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe. 22 But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils. 23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 24 “When an unclean spirit goes out of someone, it roams through arid regions searching for rest but, finding none, it says, ‘I shall return to my home from which I came.’ 25 But upon returning, it finds it swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings back seven other spirits more wicked than itself who move in and dwell there, and the last condition of that person is worse than the first.”

my reflections
t h i n k : I t is only by faith in Christ and then living our lives under the power and grace of the Holy Spirit that we will be saved.

Discernment versus Deception

Jesus met almost every kind of resistance during His ministry because He was a threat to the Jewish community’s belief and leadership. The incident in the Gospel today was one of the worst attacks against Him. Instead of being praised for driving out a demon from a man, they accused Him of having done it by the very power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons. They were desperate in discrediting Him. In response, He turned the table against them by asking them, “By whom do your own people drive them out?”
Jesus was simply not welcome. But He took advantage of the situation to proclaim the Good News to them. He challenged them to think what they wanted, but He would hold them responsible if it was true that He drove out demons by the “finger of God”! Jesus used this metaphor to send the message that He was acting by the whole power of God. He gave them a choice to stick to their accusation, which they knew was a lie, or to accept Him because He came by God’s power and authority.
Things happening around us may confuse us. It is no longer easy to tell what are real and what are deceptions. Externalities cannot be the sole criteria for judgment. Before, anyone who wore a barong was regarded as respectable. Now, even criminals wear it while committing crimes. Bald men used to be seen as bad people, like the convicted criminals. But now, it is cool to be bald. Advertisements use a lot of deceptions, too. If you are not careful, you may be had by their come-ons.
There is a need to discern. We must take time to reflect about the things laid before us. St. Paul advises us to look at the fruits. If they are good, then they must have come from the good Spirit. Even in gauging who to believe, we must not only consider their looks and reputation, but more importantly, their lives (family, work, friends) and achievements. Let us avoid the mistakes of the people in Jesus’ time. Because of their strong biases against Him and their inability to discern who He really was, they lost the chance to welcome Him and be the chosen people that they were. The salvation that would have been theirs slipped through their hands.Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
Are you easily carried away by your emotions, thoughts and guts? Do you take time to discern things that are happening around you? Do you have the courage to change your decisions when you realize that you are wrong?

Grant me the gift of discernment, Lord. I want to remain in Your truth.

St. Martin Cid, pray for us.
