DIDACHE

B.I.

“You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.” – Luke 11:52

I cannot recall when this term was coined, but I remember not wanting to be called one.
B.I., as you know, stands for Bad Influence. I often heard classmates and friends branding this girl and that boy as “B.I.” Because they were known as such, I knew I had to stay away from them.
Ironically, at some point in my life, I had been a B.I., too. When there was a prayer meeting that I was just too lazy to attend, I think I might have influenced some of my friends to skip it because they did not want to go there without me. When we were late for Sunday Mass, I might have told my family to skip that, too, and hang out in the mall instead so we could bond over a good meal. Without being conscious of it, I stopped them from spending time with God.
As Christians we are not only tasked to proclaim the goodness of the Lord. We must also be a good influence on others, and lead them closer to God by example.
I hope one day we would hear of more people being labelled as “G.I.” (Good Influence) than “B.I.”Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Were there times in your life when you were a bad influence on another person? How can you repair that?

You have shown us, Lord, how it is to live uprightly. May we always be conscious of our actions and intentions in order to lead others, by example, to love You more.

COMPANION

1st READING

God has left no stone unturned in His efforts to reveal His love to us. The problem is that we are not as receptive as we could be. We keep hiding behind the barriers of our sin thus thwarting His efforts to find and woo us back to Him. Jesus, help me to let go of my sin so that You can truly reveal Yourself to me.
\
Ephesians 1:1-10
1 Paul, an Apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the holy ones who are in Ephesus and faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, 4 as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love 5 he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will, 6 for the praise of the glory of his grace that he granted us in the beloved. 7 In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace 8 that he lavished upon us. In all wisdom and insight, 9 he has made known to us the mystery of his will in accord with his favor that he set forth in him 10 as a plan for the fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth.

P S A L M

Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4, 5-6
R: The Lord has made known his salvation.
1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 2 The LORD has made his salvation known in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R) 5 Sing praise to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn sing joyfully before the King, the LORD. (R)

G O S P E L

When the truth is spoken there will always be someone who will not accept it. This person represents those of us whose interests will be affected if we have to change and live and work according to a new set of right and fair principles. Is this someone you? We all have some dark areas of our lives that need to be brought into the light of the truth of Jesus.

Luke 11:47-54
47 The LORD said: “Woe to you who build the memorials of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the building. 49 Therefore, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute’ 50 in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple building.  Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood! 52 Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.” 53 When he left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward him and to interrogate him about many things, 54 for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say.

my reflections
t h i n k : All of us have some dark areas in our lives that we need to bring into the light of the truth of Jesus.

SABBATH

God Is In The Heart

Jesus continues His denunciation of the Pharisees and the scholars of the law. He added two more issues against them: first, they honor dead prophets by building them a memorial yet persecuted them while they were alive; second, the scholars, who were supposed to educate and enlighten the people about the law, were guilty of taking away the key to knowledge. They became responsible for the ignorance of their people. The Lord consistently points out the ironies committed by the leaders of His time. Their irresponsibility led to their rejection of Him that resulted to the mounting hostility towards Him and, later, to His arrest. Inconsistencies, bad examples and other forms of show-offs misled and confused people.
The journey towards holiness begins inside of us. If we are to find God in all creation, we must first look inside our hearts. “Our heart is restless until it rests in You!” said St. Augustine. Once we acknowledge God’s presence and reign in our hearts, all our thoughts and actions should be inspired and powered by that condition. The honor, respect, appreciation and praises that we will give others will come from the heart. They will not be empty words and deeds, but meaningful and fruitful gestures valuable not because of their material and visual content, but of their spiritual and essential origin.
Jesus showed this in the story of the widow’s mite in the Gospels. After the rich put in their gifts, the widow put in her two mites. The Lord saw that and said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in all she had to live on”(Luke 21:3-4). He praised her because she gave from the heart. The rich gave gifts out of surplus that did not really merit much before Him. The Lord gives the very important message that what counts is the heart we put into what we do. The beauty of this is that we are capable of it. God gave all of us a heart. All we need to do is ensure that our actions must come from it. And because God is in our hearts, we will act according to His Will. By this, we are assured that we will do not only what is right but what will save. Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
Do you do things based on what others will say or what God will say? God is in our hearts; let us do things from the heart!

Lord Jesus, teach me to put my heart into everything that I do. And may it be according to Your Holy Will.

Sts. Saturninus & Lupus, pray for us.
