WHERE HE LEADS

I went up in accord with revelation and I presented to them the Gospel that I preach to Gentiles... so that I might not be running... – Galatians 2:2

There are many things I wouldn’t have done in my life if the Lord had not told me to do so.
For one, I gave up all my dreams and ambitions in order to serve Him full-time after I graduated from college. People didn’t understand my decision and some thought I was wasting my college degree.
I also left my family to live in our community center so I could be available for the Lord’s service 24/7. Again, not everyone agreed with my decision. “You can serve Him even if you live at home,” I was told. But it was clear to me that the Lord wanted me to do it so I packed my bags and left.
For most of my single life, I also shunned dating and entertaining suitors because I knew that God wanted me to single-heartedly serve Him without distraction.
As I look back at my life, I see the infinite blessings I’ve reaped because I followed where the Lord told me to go. And if I would live my life all over again, I’d do things exactly the same way — obeying where Jesus tells me to go. Rissa Singson-Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com)

COMPANION

1st READING

Even the leader of the apostles can make a mistake. Hey, we hear of many of the mistakes of Peter in the Gospels! I wonder why Jesus chose Peter to lead the apostles. I think it must have been that he could read the heart of Peter and thus discerned that here was the man who had the right attitude of heart to lead the Church. God always looks at the heart and not just the mind of a person.

Galatians 2:1-2, 7-14
1 Brothers and sisters: After fourteen years I again went up to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also. 2 I went up in accord with a revelation, and I presented to them the gospel that I preach to the Gentiles — but privately to those of repute — so that I might not be running, or have run, in vain. 7 On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter to the circumcised, 8 for the one who worked in Peter for an apostolate to the circumcised worked also in me for the Gentiles, 9 and when they recognized the grace bestowed upon me, James and Kephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas their right hands in partnership, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10 Only, we were to be mindful of the poor, which is the very thing I was eager to do. 11 And when Kephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face because he clearly was wrong. 12 For, until some people came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to draw back and separated himself, because he was afraid of the circumcised. 13 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they were not on the right road in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Kephas in front of all, “If you, though a Jew, are living like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”

Psalm 117:1bc, 2
R: Go out to all the world, and tell the Good News.
1 Praise the LORD, all you nations; glorify him, all you peoples! (R) 2 For steadfast is his kindness toward us, and the fidelity of the LORD endures forever. (R)

G O S P E L
There are many aspects to a successful prayer life. One of them is being too locked into a particular structure. I like to encourage people to experiment a bit with their prayer lives until they find what works best for them and when that stops working for them, find something different. This is not a license to give up on prayer but to be more committed to making sure that it is working for you.

Luke 11:1-4
1 Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.” 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread 4 and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test.”

my reflections
think: People should experiment a bit with their prayer lives until they find what works best for them and when that stops working, find something different.

SABBATH

THE PERFECT PRAYER

Communication is a necessity in life. Life is unimaginable without it. Our mere existence is already a communication. It is much more important in faith. In the Gospel today, the disciples beg the Lord to teach them how to pray. This is also everyone’s need. How must we pray? The Lord Jesus responded by teaching them. And so, we have the Lord’s Prayer or the Our Father.
The Lord’s Prayer is a perfect prayer, not only because it came from the Lord who perfectly knows His Father, but because it contains the four necessary elements of prayer: We come before God to give Him praise (Adoration), to seek forgiveness and reconciliation (Contrition), to express our gratitude (Thanksgiving) and to beg for needed graces (Supplication). Usually, we pray to ask from God. But when was the last time we thanked God and asked for forgiveness? When did we last praise Him for the good things He has given us? Our God is not an idea. He is a Person whom we can relate to. We must always be conscious of having a personal relationship with Him.
But mouthing the words of His prayer is not enough. The one praying must mean what he says and say what he means. Sincerity must accompany prayer. Thus, the Lord’s Prayer is really a guide to praying perfectly. It tells us how we should communicate with God and what we must say. At the beginning of the prayer we are reminded to follow God’s Will —“Thy Will be done.” This, I believe, is the essence of a perfect prayer. Coming before God’s presence, we must set ourselves to follow His Will and not ours or another’s. We must be aware that God is God and we are His creatures. Fr. Jerry Orbos said that there are only two truths in life: There is God, and we are not Him. Many of us think that when we ask, it would be given. Better to ask God what He thinks is best for us. Then, leave it to Him how, where and when He would give it. When we pray this way, we will realize how powerful this communication with God is. The Lord Jesus gave us a way to the heart of His Father. He led us to the truths about the Father’s Will. And the Lord had   shown us how life must be lived according to His Father. Amen!Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
How do you regard the Lord’s Prayer (Our Father)? Do you strive to live every word in this prayer taught by the Lord Jesus? Do you realize that the prayer is perfect as to lead us to salvation when lived fully?

Lord Jesus, may we take to heart daily the prayer that You taught us. Father, Thy Will be done.

St. Faith, pray for us.
