KNOWLEDGE DOESN’T CHANGE

“Woe to you, Pharisees! You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb, but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God. These you should have done, without overlooking the others.” – Luke 11:42

One person close to my heart has been smoking two packs a day since he was just about knee high. All his life, he knew smoking isn’t good. He read all the medical bulletins. His wife and children would nag him about it every three minutes. He even memorized the warning printed on the cigarette pack. He’s long decided to quit. But he couldn’t. Because knowledge doesn’t change lives.
Until his first grandchild was born. The child’s parents made a stern decree that no nicotine-smelling creature could ever touch their baby. He could only gaze on the planet’s prettiest baby from afar. He was longing to cuddle and kiss her and it killed him that he can’t. The “distance” was unbearable. Now he’s the happiest man on earth. He’s able to kiss the one who smiles with a luster that puts gold to shame. Because he quit smoking for her.
The Pharisees know the law. But they didn’t know the Spirit of the Law. Knowledge doesn’t change lives. Only love can.Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Do you have anything that needs changing in your life? Find someone to love and do the change for.

Let me love You and the people You bring to me, enough to make me change the things that need changing in my life.

COMPANION

1st READING

The fruits of sin and the Spirit of God are contrasted by Paul to help us realize what we are choosing between when we make moral choices in our lives. Hopefully we learn to fear sin and its consequences and to love the fruits of righteousness. The saints had a hatred for sin like nothing else. Let us pray that we will develop a similar hatred so that we reject temptation when it comes.

Galatians 5:18-25
18 Brothers and sisters: If you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions, 21 occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.

P S A L M

Psalm 1:1-2, 3, 4, 6
R: Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life.
1 Blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners, nor sits in the company of the insolent, 2 but delights in the law of the LORD and meditates on his law day and night. (R) 3 He is like a tree planted near running water, that yields its fruit in due season, and whose leaves never fade. Whatever he does, prospers. (R) 4 Not so the wicked, not so; they are like chaff which the wind drives away. 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the just, but the way of the wicked vanishes. (R)

G O S P E L

Again, making a show of one’s faith will never please God. Yes, He is interested in sincerity of faith but that has nothing to do with making one’s action or self the center of attention. If you live a holy life that will come without trying. And the irony will be that you will do the best to get yourself out of the limelight. This is what the lives of the saints indicate about true holiness — it comes from self-forgetfulness, not self-interest.

Luke 11:42-46
42 The LORD said: “Woe to you Pharisees! You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb, but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God. These you should have done, without overlooking the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! You love the seat of honor in synagogues and greetings in marketplaces. 44 Woe to you! You are like unseen graves over which people unknowingly walk.” 45 Then one of the scholars of the law said to him in reply, “Teacher, by saying this you are insulting us too.” 46 And he said, “Woe also to you scholars of the law! You impose on people burdens hard to carry, but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them.”

my reflections
t h i n k : If you live a holy life, it will show without trying. In fact, you will do your best to get yourself out of the limelight.

SABBATH

All Because of God

In fulfilling His ministry, Jesus was not afraid of denouncing the leaders of His time. His priority was the fulfillment of His mission. He saw how the Pharisees and supposed teachers of the law overlooked or took for granted the more essential things in life and faith. The Pharisees thought that fulfillment of the obligation on tithes was enough; much worse, they regarded it as a replacement for loving God. They neglected the love of God through love of neighbor. Further, they gave preference to having seats of honor and public recognition over service and fulfillment of the responsibilities attached to their titles. Jesus did not spare even the scholars when He pointed out that they were willing to make laws that were burdensome to the people but were unwilling to lift one finger to touch them.
Jesus was not against rituals that help people experience God’s love and presence more, and laws that make life orderly. But He hated them if they were made just for show and for the sake of having them. Life and faith are about being and becoming. We are not only to exist but to attain the purpose God has for us. Our destiny is to be with God in His Kingdom. Therefore, any ritual or law must improve one’s life and relationship with God. Otherwise, they would just be activities devoid of meaning and worthy fruits.
Prayer is a very important act of worship. Even Jesus prayed and instructed us to pray. But prayer must find fulfillment in our daily life. When we pray for forgiveness, we must be willing to ask for it. And, having received forgiveness, we must be ready to forgive others, too. We also profess to love God and neighbor. But that is not enough. We must be attentive to someone in need and be available to share what we can so as to extend to them our love. In all of these, we bear in mind and fill our hearts with the thought that we are doing this to God.
Christian life is not limited to pious acts of worship. It must go with charitable works of all kinds. God created us to live as a  community, dependent on one another. We cannot attain our end with mere thoughts and words. God Himself accompanied His Word with deeds. The same with us. Our salvation is achieved in sincere words made flesh.Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
Do you do things for the sake of doing them? Acts of faith require sincerity; do you do them from the heart, aware of God’s presence and regard?

May everything I do be out of sincerity to bring people closer to You, Lord.

St. Romulus, pray for us.
