THE SIGN!

“This generation is an evil generation; it seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given except the sign of Jonah.” – Luke 11:29

Have you heard of the story of the mountaineer who slipped during one of his climbs and was precariously suspended on a steep and rocky mountain side? Well, the story goes that while holding on for dear life, the mountaineer fervently prayed to God for a sign of His saving help. All sorts of help came but he was adamant to stay where he was, unable to see and recognize God’s voice.
I guess you know how the story ends. Anyway, I think that same story now has several versions already. Needless to say, this story enables me to reflect on the times that I myself was unable to see, much more recognize God’s perfect plan for me.
Sometimes even, this inability to recognize God’s desire becomes my reason to be complacent, reluctant or indifferent to do His will.
Now, I fervently pray that I may be sensitive to the Lord’s voice and my eyes open to see His wondrous plans for me.Annette Abad-Flores (annette_abad_flores@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Open my eyes, Lord, so that I may see the purpose You’ve planned when You created me.

Holy Spirit, give us the grace to see You and Your perfect plans for Your sons and daughters.

1st READING

Once again, the imagery that Paul uses to make his point is not wholly successful. It does make the basic point clear that we are dealing with two options, one based on human solutions to problems, and the other based on a solution that comes from God. With the first comes a yoke of slavery, as humanity is not capable of bringing about its own salvation. The second is far more desirable as with surrender to the will and solutions of God comes a freedom of life and spirit that obedience to the law cannot bring.

Galatians 4:22-24, 26-27, 31-5:1
22 Brother and sisters: It is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the freeborn woman. 23 The son of the slave woman was born naturally, the son of the freeborn through a promise. 24 Now this is an allegory. These women represent two covenants. One was from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; this is Hagar. 26 But the Jerusalem above is freeborn, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written: “Rejoice, you barren one who bore no children; break forth and shout, you who were not in labor; for more numerous are the children of the deserted one than of her who has a husband.” 31 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are children not of the slave woman but of the freeborn woman. 5: 1 For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.

Psalm 113:1b-2, 3-4, 5a, 6-7
R: Blessed be the name of the Lord for ever.
1 Praise, you servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD. 2 Blessed be the name of the LORD both now and forever. (R) 3 From the rising to the setting of the sun is the name of the LORD to be praised. 4 High above all nations is the LORD; above the heavens is his glory. (R) 5 Who is like the LORD, our God, 6 who looks upon the heavens and the earth below? 7 He raises up the lowly from the dust; from the dunghill he lifts up the poor. (R)

G O S P E L

The sign of Jonah is repentance. It is repentance that turns the eyes of God towards the lives of His people. It is repentance that is the foundation stone of any disciple’s life. It is repentance that begins the work of salvation in a person’s life. We must find time to reflect on our lives so that we can identify the sin and repent of it. Without this we will be doomed to live frustrated and depressingly familiar lives.

Luke 11:29-32
29 While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. 30 Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here. 32 At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

my reflections
think: It is repentance that begins the work of salvation in a person’s life.

SABBATH

Jesus, the Medium and the Mess age

Why was Jesus angry at the people who were only asking for a sign? What is wrong with asking for a sign? Was that not a sign of more interest in understanding the message given? Was Jesus being so strict and irritable? If He was so concerned about the people understanding His message, why not just give a sign? Life is full of signs. Every day we make use of them. In fact, we cannot live without them. Letters are signs. Letters e, s, a, e, s, g and m, have nodefinite meaning for us, but when we rearrange and combine them to form a word, they will give us (a) message. Our mind was able to formulate mere letters into an idea equal to the meaning of the word message. Our actions, our words, our clothes — all of them are signs. Colors, shapes, textures, etc. function as signs and
can give a message. The words and deeds of the Lord are signs of the power and authority of God. He used them to reveal Himself and His Father to them. At this point, He had already spoken so many words and performed so many miracles that were more than enough for them to recognize Him and understand His message. Compared to the people of Nineveh who only had Jonah, and the Queen of the South who only had Solomon, the people in Jesus’ time had the best sign in Him. With the perfect sign before them, why were they still asking for another sign? Jesus’ point was that other signs are inferior to Him. If they could not get the message in Him, then there was no way they could get the message from another.
The Lord saw in them their rejection of Him. They closed their eyes and hearts to Him that He could not anymore do anything to make them believe Him. That is evil! The greatest sin is the rejection of Wisdom. The greatest sin is the resistance to open oneself to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Only when you allow the Spirit to inspire you can you let God’s graces enter and lead you to understand a sign.
We are more fortunate than the people of Nineveh and the Queen of the South for having the Lord Jesus as our sign. With Him, we have both the medium and the message. We do not have any reason to ask for any more signs. Jesus must be enough because He is God’s Son and His person. Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
What sign do you need in order to believe and follow Jesus? Are His words and deeds as written in the Scriptures not enough? Do you prefer the grace rather than the source of grace?

Holy Spirit, grant me the wisdom to understand the Word of the Lord Jesus that I may live according to His will.

St. Canice, pray for us.
