I SURRENDER
 
Are you so stupid? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now ending with the flesh? – Galatians 3:3
 
“I surrender, Lord,” I muttered between sobs. For years I had been trying to make things happen my way. I had a plan — work hard to get rich, buy a house and lot, travel the world, build my own business, meet Prince Charming, have a grand wedding, raise a family, etc, etc. For a time my plans were going well. I worked hard, all right, and earned much. I was able to travel, too. But with my success in my so-called career, I went astray. I lost touch with my being and let go of God’s hand, thinking I was able enough to run my life.
One day, God knocked me hard on the head. I suddenly had no work and my personal life was in shambles. Then, I found myself crawling back to Him, begging for pardon and conceding defeat. For the first time, I found peace in nothingness.
The Good Shepherd brought me back into His fold. He made me realize that I can never find my way home without His guiding hand. Is your life not happening the way you planned it? Maybe that’s not want God wants for you. Surrender to His will and let Him lead the way. Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com)
 
REFLECTION:
Humans we are, and we can only do so much. But God is omnipotent. Let Him rule your life.
 
Without You, Lord Jesus, I am nothing. When I seem to be letting go of Your hand, tighten Your grip and keep me with You.

1st READING
 
Mary is there in solidarity with the apostles praying for the coming of the Holy Spirit. She is ever-present to us in the life of the Church on a daily basis as intercessor and mother. The Rosary as a form of intercession has a long and distinguished history. The mysteries we meditate on lead us into a deeper understanding of the life of Jesus. Pray the Rosary, so the bumper sticker says. It is a good idea!
 
Acts 1:12-14 (or Galatians 3:1-5)
12 After Jesus had been taken up into heaven, the Apostles returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they entered the city they went to the upper room where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14 All these devoted themselves with one accord to prayer, together with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

The first half of the Rosary is purely scriptural: Luke1:28, 42. The second half is the simple request that Mary intercede for us. If someone has trouble with the Rosary, they must have trouble with the Gospel of Luke, too, because that is its origin. If it is good enough for the Word of God, then it is good enough for me.

26 The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, 33 and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34 But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” 35 And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. 36 And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; 37 for nothing will be impossible for God.” 38 Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

GOD IS NOT A SNOB
 
This is a further teaching of the Lord Jesus on prayer. He began with a parable of a persistent man who prevailed upon a friend to give him what he needed. Then He told His disciples that God will give them what they ask for, find what they seek, and open the door to those who knock. The clincher was the last part when He said that the Father could never deprive us of His Holy Spirit if we ask for Its presence. For no father will give his child anything that will harm him. Compared to us who are able to give good gifts despite our wickedness, God, who is all good, will surely give us the best.
In His time and in His way, He answers prayers. He says “no” if it will not be good for us. He says “yes” if it will be and if it is in accordance with His Will. He also says “wait” if it is not yet due to us. He knows what is best for us. In prayer, we must trust in Him. Hence, we must never think that He does not care if and when we do not receive yet what we prayed for.
Let us admit that there are times when we doubt His presence and wisdom. As a result, we stop praying. We stop going to Mass. We go our own way as if it was His loss. Later, we realize that it is not the right response. Rather, the more we must cling to Him and seek Him while we await His answer, the more we must knock. For without God, we are nothing. Our only way out of darkness is to seek the light. Our only course to reach our true destiny is to find the way. Our only resort to be free from all lies is to embrace the truth. And our only way to find the essence of our existence is to belong to life Himself. Not to insist on what we want, but to open ourselves to His very first response. Only when we exercise that humility can we fully benefit from His goodness.
In my prayer life, I have realized that His responses that were initially unacceptable to me were the right ones. I am just too happy that God did not give me what I asked for. The next time you pray, express fully to God your feelings and pleadings. Tell Him of your full dependence on His graces. Commit that His answer, whether it is “no,”“yes” or “wait,” would make you closer and faithful to Him. Fr. Benny Tuazon
 
Reflection Question:
Do you believe that God will always give to you the best at the right time? Were there times when you disagreed with Him? In the end, do you submit to His will?
 
Teach me, Father, to always trust in Your ways for I know You will give me what is best for me in Your chosen time.
