GLORY TO GOD IN THE street

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus... proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient. – 2 Timothy 4:1-2

In a church, there was a majestic stained glass depicting the Ascension of Jesus with the words, “Glory to God in the highest.”
One day, some boys were playing with a ball. One of them threw it and wham! It hit the stained glass. A priest saw what happened and scolded the boys. When he checked the damage, the letters “highe” was replaced by a hole. What remained was “st.” — the abbreviation of the word street.
The priest clasped his hands and prayed, “Thank God for Your wonderful message: ‘Glory to God in the _____st. (street).’” Hearing this in a homily pinched my heart. Yes, God deserves to be glorified in heaven but He wants to be glorified more in the streets. He so wants people to know Him and His unconditional love for them, and I can allow Him to use me to do it.
I can preach His message of love in simple ways. I can proclaim it with my simple “Hello” and “How are you?” or with acts of charity and warm friendliness… in the streets, where ordinary people walk, where God’s message of love is needed. Ma. Luisa dela Cruz (ma_luisa2004@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
How can you show God’s message of love in the streets?

Dearest God, teach me to love that You may be glorified everywhere.

COMPANION

1st READING

United we stand; divided we fall. There is no truer adage than this when considering a battle. The life of a disciple is a constant battle against sin, one that we can never afford to take too lightly. The challenges we face in a world so often hostile to the Gospel will overcome us unless we learn to work together and support one another in our faith. Jesus called disciples to help Him in His mission; let us not be afraid to work with one another in our missions.

Exodus 17:8-13
8 In those days, Amalek came and waged war against Israel. 9 Moses, therefore, said to Joshua, “Pick out certain men, and tomorrow go out and engage Amalek in battle. I will be standing on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” 10 So Joshua did as Moses told him. He engaged Amalek in battle after Moses had climbed to the top of the hill with Aaron and Hur. 11 As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight. 12 Moses’ hands, however, grew tired; so they put a rock in place for him to sit on. Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 And Joshua mowed down Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Psalm 121:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8
R: Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
1 I lift up my eyes toward the mountains; whence shall help come to me? 2 My help is from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. (R) 3 May he not suffer your foot to slip; may he slumber not who guards you: 4 Indeed he neither slumbers nor sleeps, the guardian of Israel. (R) 5 The LORD is your guardian; the LORD is your shade; he is beside you at your right hand. 6 The sun shall not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. (R) 7 The LORD will guard you from all evil; he will guard your life. 8 The LORD will guard your coming and your going, both now and forever. (R)

2nd READING

Paul affirms the central role of the Scriptures in the life of the Church. However, we need to remember that the Scriptures are the result of the Tradition of the Church — the Holy Spirit working through the Bishops to determine what writings are canonical and what are not. The Protestants tend to skip over this fact when they claim “sola scriptura” and thus fail to recognize the true history of the Scriptures. It is only when the Scriptures work truly within the Tradition of the Church that they can be what they are meant to be for the People of God.

2 Timothy 3:14-4:2
14 Beloved: remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it, 15 and that from infancy you have known [the] sacred scriptures, which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 4: 1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: 2 proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching.

If perseverance can change the attitude of a human judge, how much more will perseverance win over the heart of God who is all merciful and just, particularly as the case in question seems to have moral right on its side? God does not have to be convinced of the truth as He is the truth. If what we ask of God is according to truth, that is His plan for our lives, then we can be sure that it will be forthcoming. Maybe His timing differs from ours. One thing is for sure, God will be faithful to His nature; He will always respond to the truth.

Luke 18:1-8
1 Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said, 2 “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being. 3 And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’ 4 For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, 5 because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.’ ” 6 The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. 7 Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? 8 I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

my reflections
t h i n k : If what we ask of God is in accordance with the truth, we can be sure that it will be forthcoming.

God Gives What Is Best Always and Freely

The parable today seems to give the message that we need to be persistent with God. Just as the wicked judge gave in to the persistent widow, God will also give in to our persistence. Some spiritual writers have stressed the same. Bombard heaven with prayers, they said; pray even to the point of flooding God with our petitions until He, after much pressure from and compassion for us, finally gives in. There might be a grain of truth there but we have to realize that our relationship with God is, in fact, rarely that way.
We have to take into consideration the grace we ask from God. If what we ask for is not good or is against the very nature of God, then it cannot be given no matter how persistent we are. What happens if it is good? It is still dependent on God. God knows best. Even if we believe that what we ask for is the best, it may not be so for God. So why persist? Actually, the point of the parable is not about persistence. It is about the judge who was wicked and yet he gave in to the pleading of the widow. Jesus gave a desperate and extreme situation to highlight His message. He depicted the judge as having no fear of God nor respect for humans; a judge from whom one could not expect anything. The widow, who was considered the least and the last in society at that time, was desperately asking a favour from the judge. She didn’t have the money, power and influence to obtain her request. In other words, she was the last person who could ask for a favor. The picture is now complete. A wicked judge being sought by a powerless widow. Those listening to Jesus thought they knew what would happen to the case of the widow. But to their surprise, the widow prevailed upon the dishonest and wicked judge.
After telling them the parable, Jesus shifted to the goodness of His Father. He reminded them about what God will do for us. The message is: if that wicked judge gave in to the persistent widow, how much more God who is good? The widow needed to be persistent to obtain grace from the judge. But, with God, we do not need to be persistent because He knows what we need.Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
How do you see our God? Like the judge? Do you forget His immense and divine goodness? Can you accept the fact that God gives even without your persistence?

You are the Great Provider of all good things, Father. May I be at peace knowing that You have already taken care of my needs.

St. John the Dwarf, pray for us.
