THE FAITH OF JOB

The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord! – Job 1:21

Whenever I’m reminded of Job’s story, I am left in awe of the man’s unbelievable faith in God. Despite losing everything he loved and toiled for, he still managed to praise the Lord. How many of us can do the same?
I heard of horror stories about people committing suicide last year during the great recession in the US. An American shot his family, then himself, because he could no longer support them. A Briton jumped in front of a passing train because his business went bust. Many lost their jobs worldwide and business empires came crashing down. The economic impact was so great that some people were not able to stand it.
Through such trying times, notice that those who survive are the ones who keep the faith and trust in God’s wisdom and providence, who know how to count their blessings, who thank God for trials because they know they will come out as better persons when all that is over.
One way or another, we all are going through difficult times in our lives. Let us not despair. If we could have even half the faith that Job had, we’ll be all right.Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
When you are down to nothing, God is up to something.

Through difficult times, Lord, teach me to trust in You.

COMPANION

1st READING

It is important to note that even in the midst of calamity and disaster, Job did not sin. There is no way he could have understood what was going on in his life at the time (as the next 40 chapters will vividly illustrate) and still he trusts in God. Job seems to know that at the bottom of it all, God is in control and must have some reason for allowing what is happening to happen to him.

Job 1:6-22
6 One day, when the angels of God came to present themselves before the LORD, Satan also came among them. 7 And the LORD said to Satan, “Whence do you come?” Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “From roaming the earth and patrolling it.” 8 And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job, and that there is no one on earth like him, blameless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil?” 9 But Satan answered the LORD and said, “Is it for nothing that Job is God-fearing? 10 Have you not surrounded him and his family and all that he has with your protection? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock are spread over the land. 11 But now put forth your hand and touch anything that he has, and surely he will blaspheme you to your face.” 12 And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand upon his person.” So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. 13 And so one day, while his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the asses grazing beside them, 15 and the Sabeans carried them off in a raid. They put the herdsmen to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16 While he was yet speaking, another came and said, “Lightning has fallen from heaven and struck the sheep and their shepherds and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17 While he was yet speaking, another came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three columns, seized the camels, carried them off, and put those tending them to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 18 While he was yet speaking, another came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother, 19 when suddenly a great wind came across the desert and smote the four corners of the house. It fell upon the young people and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 20 Then Job began to tear his cloak and cut off his hair. He cast himself prostrate upon the ground, 21 and said, “Naked I came forth from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I go back again. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!” 22 In all this Job did not sin, nor did he say anything
disrespectful of God.

Psalm 17:1bcd, 2-3, 6-7
R: Incline your ear to me and hear my word.
1 Hear, O LORD, a just suit; attend to my outcry; hearken to my prayer from lips without deceit. (R) 2 From you let my judgment come; your eyes behold what is right. 3 Though you test my heart, searching it in the night, though you try me with fire, you shall find no malice in me. (R) 6 I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my word. 7 Show your wondrous mercies, O savior of those who flee from their foes to refuge at your right hand. It is not a matter of whether one is greater than another, but whether or not either or both are willing to obey God’s will. The focus of our lives should never be ourselves, and particularly not our importance. God has a plan for us that will work to our benefit if we do our bit. This is what we should focus on — hearing God’s will for our lives and following it.

Luke 9:46-50
46 An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. 47 Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side 48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.” 49 Then John said in reply, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow in our company.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”

SABBATH

You Are the One

Let me share with you this encouraging story forwarded to me.
One day the employees of a large company returned from their lunch break and were greeted with a sign on the front door that said: “Yesterday the person who has been hindering your growth in this company passed away. We invite you to join the funeral in the room that has been prepared in the gym.”
Everyone was sad to hear that one of their colleagues had died, but after a while they started getting curious as to who this person might be.
The excitement grew as the employees arrived at the gym to pay their last respects. One by one, the employees got closer to the coffin and when they looked inside it, they suddenly became speechless. They stood over the coffin, shocked and in silence, as if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul.
There was a mirror inside the coffin: everyone who looked inside it could see himself. There was also a sign next to the mirror that said: “There is only one person who is capable to set limits to your growth: it is YOU.”
Today we read from the book of Job how he was tested by the devil. Satan dared him that if his circumstances change, surely he would no longer be the good old Job who reveres God. God allowed Satan to change his circumstances but not to touch his soul. Job’s fortunes did change. He lost everything, except himself and his faith in God. Job’s story is a powerful reminder for us that we are above our circumstances. You are the only person who can really define your life and your happiness: not your circumstances, not your fate.
Your life does not have to change when your circumstances change. They are beyond your control. But your response to these changes depends on you. Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
Are you just flowing or floating along the river of life? Swim against the tide. Remember, only dead things float along the river.

Lord, I thank You for the wonder of my being. Help me discover my uniqueness. Help me summon the strength I have as a child of God. Guide me as I chart my destiny to the best of my abilities, with the help of Your grace. Amen.

St. Elzear, pray for us.
