THE TREE OF LIFE

“For every tree is known by its fruit.” – Luke 6:44

Today’s reading reminds me of Charry, a classmate from college. She was a beautiful person inside and out, who would always say positive things about others so much so that everybody thought she must be some kind of an angel, one who’s heaven-sent.
We found out later when we had a chance to talk to some people who knew their family that she was really a good person. She was raised in a religious environment, surrounded by loving and supportive parents and two older sisters. She had beautiful childhood memories, filled with love and affection from all her relatives and friends.
Through the years that we were classmates, we always looked up to her as our angel of perpetual help. We turned to her whenever we needed something. And she never put us down or failed us. She was indeed our shoulder to cry on, among other things.
Twenty-five years later, during our class Silver Jubilee reunion, we awarded her “Miss Congeniality.” We also requested Charry’s parents to attend that special occasion as we believed that “a good tree bears good fruit.” Dr. Henry Yu (henrio_md@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
“In every conceivable manner, the family is link to our past, bridge to our future.” (Alex Haley)

Father, teach us to be more understanding and tolerant towards other people’s character. Help us to become the persons that You want us to be.

Who are your children following?

A physician told this story about her then four-year-old daughter. On the way to preschool, the doctor left her stethoscope on the car seat. Her little girl picked it up and began playing with it. She immediately saw visions of her child in a physician’s garb just like her. “Be still, my heart,” thought the doctor, “my daughter wants to follow in my footsteps!” Then the child spoke into the instrument: “Welcome to Jollibee! May I take your order?”
So much for following in her footsteps….
It is the law of nature that a mango tree bears only mango fruit. A guava tree bears only guava fruit. It happens naturally. Today, Jesus talks about the good tree bearing good fruit. The challenge here is that Jesus talks about something that goes beyond the automatic laws of nature. Good and well-formed children do not just fall from the sky. Every parent reading this knows that raising good children for the Kingdom of God can be one of the most challenging aspects of parenting.
In this day and age of technological advancement, the challenge has become all the more daunting. Just days ago, I read of a boy in Switzerland who watched television for 72 straight hours. He made it to the Guinness book of World Records. Children in the Philippines are said to be spending an average of eight to 10 hours before the television each day. That’s more than one third of one day! If they are not in front of the TV, they are in front of the computer screen or on the cell phone. These technological gadgets have become virtual babysitters. It is said that the hand that rocks the cradle is the most powerful hand in the world. But now, it is no longer a hand but a screen. It is no longer a person but pixels. Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
1. Who is rocking the cradle of your children right now?
2. Who are you more at home with — a person or a screen?

Lord, we thank You for the wonders of technology. Help us to use them well. Help us to realize that technology was made for the service of man.

St. Ambrose Edward Barlow, pray for us.
