Boracay

He has made everything appropriate to its time… – Ecclesiastes 3:11

For many years, I had planned to go to Boracay. But for one reason or another, I was never able to go. I just said to myself that it would happen in the Lord’s perfect timing. When God’s allotted time came, He made my joy complete. One day, one of my real estate clients called me and asked if I was interested to go to Boracay. He had booked accommodations for his friend but the latter backed out. So I got my accommodations free.
Then we bumped into my husband’s friends whom he had not seen for 17 years. They wanted to go to Boracay on the weekend we were booked to go. Together with them, we enjoyed the powdery sands and glorious sunset of Boracay at one of its finest hotels.
To top it all, at Sunday Mass, we got a heart-warming homily about God’s amazing grace. What more could I ask of God’s timing?
Truly, “in His time He makes all things beautiful.”Donna España (donna@homeliving.com.ph)

REFLECTION:
Wait on the Lord and your reward will be great!

Lord, give me the gift of patience to wait and listen to Your voice. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

There is a time for everything under heaven, except sin. However, that time for something in one person’s life does not mean that it is the same for another person. As individuals, each of us must stand before and with God and discern what His will is for our lives. And then we have to learn to trust that that will is the one that will fulfill our being.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-11
1 There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens. 2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant. 3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to tear down, and a time to build. 4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. 5 A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them; a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces. 6 A time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away. 7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to be silent, and a time to speak.8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. 9 What advantage has the worker from his toil? 10 I have considered the task which God has appointed for men to be busied about. 11 He has made everything appropriate to its time, and has put the timeless into their hearts, without men’s ever discovering, from beginning to end, the work which God has done.

Psalm 144:1b, 2abc, 3-4
R: Blessed be the Lord, my Rock!
1 Blessed be the LORD, my rock, 2 my mercy and my fortress, my stronghold, my deliverer, my shield, in whom I trust. (R) 3 LORD, what is man, that you notice him; the son of man, that you take thought of him? 4 Man is like a breath; his days, like a passing shadow. (R)

G O S P E L
One of the greatest challenges the disciples of Jesus faced was accepting that His mission involved suffering and even death. And to make matters worse, His death was a really horrible one — crucifixion. This challenge is similar for all disciples of Jesus as we embrace the suffering in our lives and that of others as we minister to them. We need to meditate daily on the sufferings of Christ according to Alphonsus Ligouri, the founder of the Redemptorists. Why? So that we will know that suffering is not the end, but a means to an end, which is salvation.

Luke 9:18-22
18 Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 They said in reply, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.’ ” 20 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said in reply, “The Christ of God.” 21 He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone. 22 He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.”

my reflections
think: Suffering is not the end, but a means to an end, which is salvation.

SABBATH

NOT BY A VOTE

Three priests and a nun were debating on a theological question. The three priests agreed on the matter while the nun was on her own. There was no clear winner in the debate as both groups were very good in their arguments. To resolve the matter, they decided to seek some divine intervention. The sister, a very holy nun, prayed to God earnestly. After a few minutes, a voice from heaven spoke, saying, “Sister is right.” The sister rejoiced but the three priests were too stubborn to accept defeat. The sister proclaimed, “You see I’m right. I won the debate.” “Not so quick, sister,” one of the priests quickly retorted, “it’s still three against two.”
In today’s Gospel, Jesus asked for an opinion poll. “Who do the crowds say that I am?” Some say He was Elijah, some say John the Baptist while many others think He is one of the prophets of old. The responses were many and varied. And wrong. Then Peter spoke, “You are the Messiah of God.” Peter, alone, got it right. In this episode, the old principle is proven correct. Truth is truth even if no one believes it and error is error even if everybody believes it.
Maybe you have heard the phrase that goes, “The Church is not and cannot be a democracy.” This does not mean that the Church operates like a tyrant. No. It means that the truths of salvation cannot be left to surveys and opinion polls. In the area of faith and morals, truth is determined not by a raise of hands or by numbers game. Truth is determined by the wise use of reason reflecting on the natural moral law. Truth is served by consulting the legitimate sources of moral and doctrinal wisdom like the Scriptures, the sacred tradition and the works of theologians. Truth is served by the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit, who was promised by Jesus Himself to Peter and the disciples and their legitimate successors (see Luke 22:31ff; also Matthew 16:18-19 and 18:18).Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
Where and how do you search for the truths of the faith and of God? Do you simply go along with the flow?

Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church. You do not wish us to stray from Your truth. Make me a voracious and courageous seeker of Your truth. Amen.

St. Rusticus, pray for us.
