power of attorney

Jesus... gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases. – Luke 9:1

Many years ago, when we realized that my mom’s Alzheimer’s disease would soon take even her ability to read and write, we executed a power of attorney. In that legal document, it gave me the power to sign for anything in my mom’s name.
So when an interested party wanted topurchase a property that my mom owned, I signed the deed of sale in her behalf. And it was as legal as if she herself had signed for it.
As I thought about it, I was amazed. My mom, who is practically a vegetable, lives through me — all because of some legal document that vested her authority upon me. Now meditate on this: Every Christian has a power of attorney that gives us the right to stand in the place of Jesus Christ! We bear His same power and authority — over demons, disease and even nature.
But how many of us actually exercise this power? Many of us go through life without even being aware of the immense power that Jesus has bestowed upon us. Friend, get to know the terms of your heavenly power of attorney. Read the Bible and start exercising Jesus’ authority. Rissa Singson-Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
“May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ... enlighten your innermost vision that you may know... the immeasurable scope of his power in us who believe.” (Ephesians 1:17, 19)

Lord, may I be Your faithful representative to the world.

COMPANION

1st READING

It is not poverty or riches that will give us fulfilling lives but the presence of God. This is not an easy truth to accept in a world so determined to sell us the latest piece of gadgetry and wizardry. The world would be a lot better if we were more discerning as to how we embrace the so-called technological advances of our age. The need to make money seems to be the governing factor most of the time.

Proverbs 30:5-9
5 Every word of God is tested; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. 6 Add nothing to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be exposed as a deceiver. 7 Two things I ask of you, deny them not to me before I die 8 Put falsehood and lying far from me, give me neither poverty nor riches; provide me only with the food I need; 9 lest, being full, I deny you, saying, “Who is the LORD?” Or, being in want, I steal, and profane the name of my God.

P S A L M

Psalm 119:29, 72, 89, 101, 104, 163
R: Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.
29 Remove from me the way of falsehood, and favor me with your law. (R) 72 The law of your mouth is to me more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces. (R) 89 Your word, O LORD, endures forever; it is firm as the heavens. (R) 101 From every evil way I withhold my feet, that I may keep your words. (R) 104 Through your precepts I gain discernment; therefore I hate every false way. (R) 163 Falsehood I hate and abhor; your law I love. (R)

G O S P E L

The Spirit of God will always encourage us to trust more deeply in God’s goodness to us. We need to realize that no matter how attractive the promises of the world might be, they can never compare with the promises of God. There is a difference between the two in that God’s promises are eminently trustworthy and the world’s promises are not. The world might not agree with this, nevertheless it is true.

Luke 9:1-6
1 Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal [the sick]. 3 He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there. 5 And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.” 6 Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the good news and curing diseases everywhere.

my reflections
t h i n k : N o matter how attractive the promises of the world might be, they cannot compare with the promises of God.

SABBATH

Response-able

In the seminary, the end of semesters are always times of accountability and responsibility. It is a time of reckoning, of evaluation. It is a time to see at which level one has responded to the demands of formation. The seminarians “return” to the Rector and seminary priest formators and “report” what they have done the whole semester. This encounter can be a mixture of joy and pain, of pride and shame.
In today’s Gospel, the apostles return to Jesus to report to Him everything that they have accomplished after a day of being commissioned out. First called in Luke 6:12-16, Luke recounts that the apostles came back filled with pride “and told Jesus what they have done” (Luke 9:10).
Jesus demands an accounting from the apostles. He demands the same from all of us. And rightly so. I remember here a passage from the book of the prophet Isaiah where Yahweh proclaims (to the effect), “Just as from the heavens the snow and the rain come down and do not return to me void and empty…it will fulfill the mission for which it was sent.” (Isaiah 55:11ff). If God demands accountability and responsibility from inanimate things, how much more does God demand from us, persons, created in God’s image and likeness, the same accountability and responsibility? We areresponseable,” that is, we have the ability to respond.
Sometime ago, I read from a spiritual writer that when Jesus was hanging on the cross, He said, “It is finished.” He did not say, “I am finished.” I would like to interpret it this way. “It is finished” are the words of a fulfilled man, confident that he has accomplished his mission, and accomplished it well. “I am finished” is the lament of a man who has nothing to show, nothing to account for. May our lot be that of the apostles and of Jesus. With Jesus and the apostles, may we say with holy pride, on the time of our accounting, “It is finished.”Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
Imagine your moment of accountability before God. How do you think it will turn out? Will it be joyful and filled with pride just like that of the apostles? What will your last words be?

Lord Jesus, I am grateful that I am created in God’s image and likeness — such an honor, such a privilege. Grant me the grace to live up to this calling. Amen.

St. Maurice, pray for us.
