ENSLAVED BY THE ENEMY

“But love your enemies and do good to them.” – Luke 6:35

“Grrr. I want to kill him!”
Have you ever felt this before? I have. Many times! This hatred was directed towards the person to whom I entrusted my heart and future but got anguish and a dysfunctional family life instead. Anger consumed me. In questioning my fate, I, in turn, lost my faith.
I was prodded to attend a Catholic prayer meeting. In due time, God’s loving presence jolted me out of my enslavement. His Word moved me to embark on what seemed to be the unthinkable journey of forgiveness. More difficult for me was reaching out and pursuing genuine acts of kindness despite being scoffed at and perceived as hypocritical each time. Tumultuous as it was, I learned to lift it up to God and let go.
In this 18-year journey, family relationships were destroyed. I lost my pride and my son chose to live with his father. My rewards? Peace of mind, my character and I got my faith back! We are still estranged but in forgiving him, forgiveness to others became second nature to me. No more enemies for me. As for loving? That will follow. Marie Franco (rfranco@its.jnj.com)

REFLECTION:
It’s hard to look past the hurt. But it’s even harder not to take revenge and forgive. But with God, everything is possible.

Come Holy Spirit, release our hearts from the bondage of anger.

COMPANION

1st READING

The conscience judgment of an individual is beyond anyone else’s ability or right to judge in a subjective manner. The content of the judgment (the objective matter) can be measured against the moral teachings of the Church but the subjective character of it is a matter between the person and God alone (see Gaudium et Spes, nn. 15-16). This is why Paul talks about trying to avoid forcing a “weak” person (one whose conscience judgment is objectively incorrect according to your conscience judgment) to act against their conscience judgment. This is a requirement of love.

1 Corinthians 8:1b-7, 11-13
1 Brothers and sisters: Knowledge inflates with pride, but love builds up. 2 If anyone supposes he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. 3 But if one loves God, one is known by him. 4 So about the eating of meat sacrificed to idols: we know that “there is no idol in the world,” and that “there is no God but one.” 5 Indeed, even though there are so-called gods in heaven and on earth (there are, to be sure, many “gods” and many “lords”), 6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom all things are and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are and through whom we exist. 7 But not all have this knowledge. There are some who have been so used to idolatry up until now that, when they eat meat sacrificed to idols, their conscience, which is weak, is defiled. 11 Thus through your knowledge, the weak person is brought to destruction, the brother for whom Christ died. 12 When you sin in this way against your brothers and wound their consciences, weak as they are, you are sinning against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I may not cause my brother to sin.

Psalm 139:1b-3, 13-14ab, 23-24
R: Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way.
1 O LORD, you have probed me and you know me; 2 you know when I sit and when I stand; you understand my thoughts from afar. 3 My journeys and my rest you scrutinize, with all my ways you are familiar. (R) 13 Truly you have formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. 14 I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made; wonderful are your works. (R) 23 Probe me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts; 24 See if my way is crooked, and lead me in the way of old. (R)

For a Christian there is no such thing as an enemy, except when we are talking about the devil and sin. Jesus makes it quite clear that we are to love our “enemies.” Jesus here is telling us to love our enemies to the point that we will no longer consider them enemies. This is the nature of the Gospel and God’s love — they transform lives such that we all become one in Christ Jesus.

Luke 6:27-38
27 Jesus said to his disciples: “To you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. 34 If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount. 35 But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as also your Father is merciful. 37 “Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. 38 Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”
Psalm 76-80
my reflections
think: Jesus tells us to love our enemies to the point that we will no longer consider them enemies.

SABBATH

Are you Strong?

Carlo and Jaime were having their examination. The teacher was walking around observing everybody making sure there was no hanky panky going on. When the teacher turned her back, Carlo whispered to Jaime to ask him the answer to a question. Jaime refused. Carlo pressed him on and chided him, “What kind of a friend are you?” Hesitantly, Jaime took a piece of paper and began writing on it. When he finished, he handed it over to Carlo. Just at that moment, the teacher turned and saw Jaime handing the piece of paper to Carlo. She intercepted the paper and opened it. It read, “Bro, let us not cheat.” The teacher showed it to Carlo. Carlo was embarrassed but gave Jaime a look of appreciation and admiration. The teacher nodded in approval.
In today’s first reading, Paul admonishes those who are enlightened to strengthen those who are weak in the faith. If eating meat which is not sinful per se, would scandalize those who are weak and who think that eating meat would make people impure, Paul admonishes the enlightened ones to desist for the moment so as not to scandalize those who are still weak in the faith. A little sacrifice is worthwhile if it means not scandalizing others. The principle is that the strong should be ready to accompany, strengthen and then ultimately reform those who are still weak. But oftentimes, it is the weak that influences the strong, the evil ones who entice the good ones to their side. Strengthening the weak is a concrete expression of a spiritual work of mercy of instructing the ignorant and counseling the doubtful.
Carlo in our story was still weak. Jaime strengthened him by his gentle yet ardent admonition. Carlo was enticing him to commit a wrong for the sake of their friendship, but Jaime stood strong. In the end, he won Carlo over to his side.Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
1. Have you won anyone over by strengthening them out of their weakness?
2. Have you been a source of scandal especially to those who are weak?

Lord Jesus, You are the light of the world. Help us to be bearers of that light. Help us to counsel the doubtful and instruct the ignorant in an ardent but gentle way. Amen.

St. Hyacinth, pray for us.
