FORGIVE YOURSELF

That is what some of you used to be; but now you have had yourselves washed… in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. – 1 Corinthians 6:11

Karen led a troubled life. She lost her mother before she turned into a woman, and had a rift with her father when he married again.  Feeling unloved and insignificant, she rebelled against her family. She gave up her purity to a married man who dumped her. Her heartbreak eventually grew into a lack of selfesteem, and this gave her problems at work. She made enemies due to her inefficiency, and she turned into an angry, cynical woman.
One day, she joined a Catholic singles community. She made new friends and felt loved again. Most importantly, she straightened her ways and welcomed Jesus into her life. However, each time a considerable problem comes her way, she believes that she’s being punished for her past mistakes.
Many have a little bit of Karen in them. I do, too. Even though I know that God has forgiven my sins, I sometimes feel unworthy of His love and end up thinking that the problems I face are karmic events. But they are not so.
If you feel that your past is weighing you down, remember this: God loves you no matter what you had done before. You just have to learn to forgive yourself.Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you too hard on yourself?

Lord, nothing can be greater than Your love and mercy.Teach me to forgive not just others, but also myself.

SABBATH

Are You Kind?

In today’s first reading, Paul takes to task the Corinthian community. He founded that community about 51 A.D. and just five years later, he hears of the disunity and legal battles disrupting the harmony of the community. He writes, “How dare you drag one another to courts?” Christians are immediately bringing one another to pagan courts to settle their disputes and to determine who is right.
The key here is the word “immediately.” Paul expects the Christians to rule their lives not only by the force of law but first and foremost by the force of love. This is what will distinguish them from the rest of the unbelievers. Paul is recommending here a virtue that should characterize the Christian community: it is more important to be kind than to be right.
I was once invited to bless the house of a family. I immediately noticed that the house was “minimalist,” not by style but by economic consequence. The family was poor and there was barely any furniture beyond the necessary. It was a simple but beautiful house. After the blessing, they were handing me an envelope as stipend. I humbly refused it. By Canon Law, ministers can be given a stipend for their ministerial services. Although by law and practice it was “right,” I felt it was unkind for me to take it in that situation. I wanted to be kind more than right. I felt so much better afterwards. There are people who are right but not kind. There are people whose lives are ruled solely by the force of law and not by the force of love. Justice is the minimum of love while love is the perfection of justice. Remember the call of Jesus: “Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48).Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
1.    What force rules your life right now? The force of law or the force of Christian love?
2.    2. Have you ever experienced the liberating happiness that is the fruit of Christian charity?

Lord Jesus, we are grateful for Your love and mercy. You do not deal with us as our sins deserve. Difficult it may be, may we treat one another not only with the discipline of law but also with the power of love. Help us not so much to be right as to be kind. Amen.

St. Cloud, pray for us.
