do you see ?

He appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred brothers... after that he appeared to James, then to all apostles. Last of all, he appeared to me. – 1 Corinthians 15:5-8

I sat in the pew wondering what had happened to my friend. Throughout the weeks of the Life in the Spirit seminar, we were one in laughing at the speakers and finding the singing and dancing corny stuff for young teens like us. But now, after her Baptism in the Holy Spirit, she was bawling. She also said that she had seen the Lord in a vision.
At the evaluation that followed, many others testified to having physical manifestations during the baptism. Some felt hot, some cried, some  experienced God’s embrace or received the gift of tongues, a few saw Jesus. Not me. I didn’t feel anything. I didn’t receive anything. I didn’t see Jesus.
St. Paul must have felt the same way. The other apostles and disciples of Jesus had seen the Risen Lord but it took a while before he did. It didn’t matter though. Because when Paul finally saw the Lord, his repentance was so real that it turned his world upside down.
Friend, it doesn’t matter when you see Jesus. What matters is what you do after you see Him. When I finally saw Him, I couldn’t stop following Him. Rissa Singson-Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
No one remains unchanged after seeing Jesus.

Jesus, let me see You in my life every day. Amen .

COMPANION

1st READING

Paul details his understanding of the resurrection appearances of the Lord, including his own, which technically speaking is a little different as it is after Christ has ascended into heaven. Whatever the case with the appearance of Christ to Paul, there is no doubting the depth of Paul’s conversion. Let us all reflect upon the meaning of the resurrection in terms of its potential to change our lives.

1 Corinthians 15:1-11
1 I am reminding you, brothers and sisters, of the Gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in which you also stand. 2 Through it you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. 3 For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures; 4 that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures; 5 that he appeared to Kephas, then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 After that he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one born abnormally, he appeared to me. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been ineffective. Indeed, I have toiled harder than all of them; not I, however, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Therefore, whether it be I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

Psalm 118:1b-2, 16ab-17, 28
R: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. 2 Let the house of Israel say, “His mercy endures forever.” (R) 16 “The right hand of the LORD is exalted; the right hand of the LORD has struck with power.” 17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. (R) 28 You are my God, and I give thanks to you; O my God, I extol you. (R)

G O S P E L

Jesus is not very interested in our past except to forgive our sins and bring healing to past hurts. The critical element coming from us is whether or not we are willing to open our lives to the power of God and allow Him to work within us. It is always a risk when we open our lives to other people, but opening our lives to God and His love is about the best risk we can take.

Luke 7:36-50
36 A certain Pharisee invited Jesus to dine with him, and he entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table. 37 Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, 38 she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment. 39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.” 40 Jesus said to him in reply, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. 41 “Two people were in debt to a certain creditor; one owed five hundred days’ wages and the other owed fifty. 42 Since they were unable to repay the debt, he forgave it for both. Which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon said in reply, “The one, I suppose, whose larger debt was forgiven.” He said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44 Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but she has bathed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with ointment. 47 So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; hence, she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.” 48 He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 The others at table said to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 50 But he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
Psalm 111-115

SABBATH

Real or Not

In the spirit of fun and in aid of pastoral instruction, let me share with you this old, funny story about a woman who loves the Blessed Mother deeply (please, no offense meant to all our Marian devotees).
Feliza is a staunch devotee of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Morning, noon and evening she can be seen at the Church praying before the image of the Blessed Mother. Even during Mass, she would be praying the Rosary in front of the image to the annoyance of the parish priest. One evening, the priest decided to pull a trick on her. The priest hid behind the image of the Sacred Heart which was beside the image of Our Lady. As Feliza was praying the Rosary, the priest, in a modulated voice said, “Feliza, why do keep praying the Rosary even when the Mass is going on?” The woman asked, “Who is this?” The priest answered, “I am Jesus, the Son of Mary.” Feliza replied,  “Keep quiet then, I am talking to Your mother.”
Unfortunately for some people, Jesus is just an abstraction, a story or perhaps a tragic personality.
In today’s first reading, Paul took pains to enumerate the historical data pointing to the reality of the person of Jesus. He specifically mentions the actual eyewitnesses to the Risen Christ, which include himself. Paul here wants to emphasize that Jesus was not simply a story concocted by creative minds.
Paul also highlighted how the Risen Christ actually impacted his vocation, the direction of his life, from a persecutor of Christians to being an apostle of Christ.
Today, we see many religious movements that seek the divine. Many of them portray God as an abstract, impersonal force, an unknown force in nature or within oneself. But man cannot love the cosmos. Man cannot love that which he cannot embrace. That is why God took on flesh, became man, that humanity might be able to “put his arms around Him.” Mary did, Joseph did, and all the people who lived with the historical Jesus.Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
Evaluate the impact Jesus has in your life. Is Jesus a reality in your life? Is He just an abstraction for you?

Jesus, You were born of the Virgin Mary, proof that You came to dwell with us, in flesh and blood. Make my faith not a religion of abstraction but of conviction. Amen.

St. Ninian, pray for us.
