BROTHERS AND SISTERS

“Joanna, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources.” – Luke 8:3

One of the things that I was taught back in my youth group days was the different roles of brothers and sisters in service. The brothers, being the males, are the initiators, the ones who take the lead. They are the ones who set the vision for the group, the ones who lead the prayer meeting or worship. They take care of the functional aspect of the service, all the while rooted in God.
It’s not that sisters aren’t supposed to do anything. In fact, sisters are also trained to do what brothers can, but being female, we are “wired” differently. While males take the lead, the females follow and support them. While the brothers take care of the functional stuff, the sisters take care of the relational stuff, the matters of the heart.
The roles are different, but both equally important. They say God created man out of His image, but He created women after His heart. It’s not about being sexist, but knowing, doing and following what God intended us to do.Tina Matanguihan (tina.matanguihan@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Am I doing what God has wired me to do?

Lord, may I live to be a man/woman that lives to follow You.

COMPANION

1st READING

If Jesus has not been raised from the dead then the Gospel proclamation is merely smoke and mirrors, fodder for the comedians. It is essential to the Christian message that the tomb is empty and that Jesus is alive. Otherwise there is no victory over death and sin. Jesus is risen, has been, is and always will be the essence of the proclamation of the Gospel.

1 Corinthians 15:12-20
12 Brothers and sisters: If Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then neither has Christ been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then empty too is our preaching; empty, too, your faith. 15 Then we are also false witnesses to God, because we testified against God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, neither has Christ been raised, 17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are the most pitiable people of all. 20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

P S A L M

Psalm 17:1bcd, 6-7, 8b, 15
R: Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full.
1 Hear, O LORD, a just suit; attend to my outcry; hearken to my prayer from lips without deceit. (R) 6 I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my word. 7 Show your wondrous mercies, O savior of those who flee from their foes to refuge at your right hand. (R) 8 Hide me in the shadow of your wings 15 But I in justice shall behold your face; on waking, I shall be content in your presence. (R)

G O S P E L

None of us walks through life without friends and the help of others. We are communal beings who need other human beings in order to draw the best out of us. In the same manner, we also contribute to bringing the best out of them. Let us be committed to the relationships we have and seek to strengthen them so that they will be good formative forces in our lives.

Luke 8:1-3
1 Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. Accompanying him were the Twelve 2 and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources.

my reflections
t h i n k : We are communal beings who need other human beings to draw the best out of us.

SABBATH

Women Power

I once received this text message: “What is marriage? Marriage is when a male loses his ‘bachelors’ degree and a woman earns her ‘masters.’”
Here’s another one: A priest said to the couple in a wedding, “From now on, the two of you will become one.” The man asked, “Which one Father?”
The competition between the sexes has always been the subject of many discussions. Women during Jesus’ time were second class citizens. Together
with children, they have no legal personality. To be considered a legal entity, they have to be associated with a male person by marriage. Thus, to be widowed would revert a woman back to her second class status in society.
Males, on the other hand, have the advantage. They control the powerful places in the social stratum. Male religious leaders are highly esteemed. Religious law therefore forbids women to go near, much less, to be a constant companion of male religious leaders. We see none of this in today’s Gospel. Jesus, the religious leader, goes through towns and villages accompanied by the apostles and some women, such as Mary of Magdala, Joanna, Susanna and many others. These women were not starry-eyed fans but disciples of Jesus. He considered them as His partners in the ministry. In doing so, Jesus was making a statement against the prevailing male chauvinistic culture of His time.
We have gone a long way since the time of our Lord. But we still have miles to go. Prostitution, pornography, the trafficking of women, contraception and abortion are still prevalent today. Some of these even have the possibility of being legalized.
Slogans like “women power” and “pro-choice” promote the same oppressive spirit, only in a different and more sophisticated form — only in a way that perpetuates the cycle of competition and isolation.Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
Let us make a collective examination of conscience and see in what ways we condone, consciously or unconsciously, the oppression of women.

O Blessed Mother, true pride of our race and model of true and genuine feminism, pray for us to God for the gift of true respect and appreciation of the gift of femininity. Amen.

St. Hildegarde, pray for us.
